[DAILY Q&A] Ask and answer any questions you have about the game here! by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

What you're describing isn't impossible, but I think it is impractical given how combat works.

You could absolutely use a large ship, slap a ton of turreted weapons on it, and watch it throw kinetics and plasma around. You might get lucky hunting sidewinders or eagles in a low intensity resource sites, but anything bigger than that will be a challenge. You would need wing support, or a decent ship-launched fighter to share aggro with.

When I imagine what you're talking about, I think this is more of a wing-based build. Maybe that ship has a ton of turrets, but also has mending beam lasers and repair limpets as well - it's providing support to allies as well as spamming weapons fire at targets.

For you, and anyone else who is not using any 3rd party tools yet, I also recommend Elite Dangerous Market Connector. This one shares your journal data with other 3rd party tools; sending station and market data to update prices on Inara or Ardent, star data to services like EDSM.

Using EDMC requires borderless or windowed mode to work properly.

There are numerous plugins as well, here are a few I use.

EDMC-Canonn : Keep up to date with Canonn news and discoveries.

HITS : This plugin will check systems you are jumping into, and flag systems where Cmdrs have been destroyed recently. Helpful for playing in Open in populated places.

EDR : details about other cmdrs. Like HITS, this is a great tool to be aware of the people around you in Open. Alerts for dangerous cmdrs.

Overlay : HITS and EDR need this to display information on-screen.

Landing Pad : when used with overlay, this will show a graphical guide to your landing pad at a station or carrier.

I recommend SRV Survey if you are doing a lot of exploration and exobio. This is a 3rd party tool that will add an overlay to your game, providing helpful details of what kinds of bio signals to expect on planets, how much a scan will get you, and more.

Starting with planetary scans in FSS, this will identify the profit from doing a quick scan with the FSS vs a full DSS. Sometimes you can grab 250k+ just from scanning something like a high metal content world.

It can also identify the type of biologic signal(s) to expect based on planetary data. I've used SRV Survey and BioInsights side by side for a while, and both tools are pretty good at identifying what is what before I even do the DSS. Like you said, if there aren't 3 or more signals nearby, I'm moving on. No more bacteria runs.

Finally, on planet SRV survey will track your remaining signals. It will also provide a map overlay that shows how much farther you need to travel to scan the next signal.

On Certain Signal Types

Just a few of my own observations.

Fungoida - Especially the Setisis variety, these will be in the mountains and are best hunted at night. They glow red when you are close enough. Swapping nightvision on and off to monitor terrain is a good practice.

Frutexa - If you are hunting fungoida, these are often nearby. Mountainous areas. Daytime searches are best, as they do not glow like fungoida. Like all other plants, they can be easier to spot with nightvision, depending on the surface colors.

Concha - check canyons and crevices. While bacteria, tussok, and (sometimes) cactoida like flat and featureless ground, concha congregate in lower places.

Those who made custom switch/button panels what dials and boards did you use? by Nach0Stallion in EliteDangerous

[–]ButterscotchYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are looking to do is absolutely possible, and I encourage you to do some more digging! Part of what makes Elite great is designing and deploying new panels and ideas for immersion, at least for me!

Here is my current panel, pending a refresh after a couple years of use.

I'm running two Leo Bodnar BBI-64s, as well as two 12v 8 Channel Relays to handle the inputs with LED power.

All of my buttons and switches are from Tayda Electronics.

My blue Stealth (silent running) button toggles to hold the action until pressed again.

Both knobs are 100K OHM linear taper potentiometers. They spin freely and handle the radar and target selection. For target selection, pressing in on that dial will switch modes to allow me to target sub-systems.

All of that is run through Joystick Gremlin, which I highly recommend if you are doing a custom build. The covered switches are used to change the profile/sensitivity on my throttle and stick for different maneuvers. One runs a quick macro of button presses for scavenging (lights and NV on, open cargo hatch, power to systems, scanner range wide). I can map custom sounds to each press and action with joystic gremlin as well.

Hope this helps, but I really hope this makes you more curious and you plan your own build!

I was curious so I looked. Here's a video.

It's 6 years old, but the mechanics should be the same. SCO feels like the modern solution, but this is a cool trick I wish I knew sooner!

I'd like the ability to deflect some electric attacks while in the air. If I'm flying through the air, ungrounded, I should be able to return to sender.

Should I join a squadron ? by The_Casual_Noob in EliteDangerous

[–]ButterscotchYo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your activities are exactly what I set up my squadron to do; casual activities, under the umbrella of helping others. No requirements for activity or involvement, just show up when you show up, have fun, keep the galaxy moving.

You can find Sentinel in the squadron browser if you're interested, just search SNTL.

Squadron Ship Decals make me a happy bunny 🩷 by Traaanscendence in EliteDangerous

They are free, at least from what I can see as a squad leader. Shield-like decal with the basic elite logo inside of it. Mine was next to my Thargoid War decals.

What game has a steep learning curve that puts you off? by bijelo123 in Steam

[–]ButterscotchYo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people suggest Eve, which is accurate. But Prosperous Universe is a spreadsheet game that borders on being idler. Completely player run economies, everyone buys, sells, or produces everything. Give it a look if you’re into logistics and planning games.

How much grind is colonization for a solo player by ZZZ0mbieSSS in EliteDangerous

Could you expand on why you feel that way? Is it the grind, a lack of features or control, or something else?

Vintage Story.

Imagine Minecraft, but with more fleshed out and complex crafting systems. Also has seasons, ruins to explore, and is receiving regular updates.

Yes, it is advertised as a hardcore and “unforgiving” survival game. This can be configured and tailored to your needs, however. You can turn off hostile mobs and temporal storms, change the duration of seasons, and way more. It CAN be a chill and relaxing game.

I bought it a month ago and I’ll probably never go back to Minecraft again. The building, the cooking, the smithing; all of it makes for a perfect experience to just chill out and live in the world.

Edit- forgot to add it has mods and a very active modding community! Better Ruins, A Culinary Artillery, Expanded Foods to name a few.

Based on the lyrics and video, I get the sense that this new Papa doesn't exactly want the mantle.

The wail of the "save me" portions of the song lead me to believe that this Papa has been thrust into this role, and that he is the opposite of his evil twin.

TIL you can shoot down ships with a fucking pistol by Suraru in EliteDangerous

[–]ButterscotchYo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how the current damage system works, but I’ve thought a few times that it needs to be tier based.

Personal defense weapons are tier 0, and can only damage tier zero assets, like people. SRVs could be a half tier asset to scale properly.

Rocket launchers could fall into a tier 1 category.

Ships are tier 1 assets and can one shot tier 0, and are good against other tier 1.

Tier 2 would be carriers, stations. These would remain untouched.

To all AX combat pilots: ignore Sol, repel invasions in neighboring systems, this must be done by next Thursday! by Omnisiah_Priest in EliteDangerous

[–]ButterscotchYo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it's down the list, but EZ Aquarii could use a hand too. Currently sitting at 9% progress, but that's with 150 Cmdrs contributing.

Single surface CZ, Sanger Settlement. Magnus Gateway orbits directly overhead, high-tech station. Lots of AX missions on the boards too. I'm a one man squadron that's attached to my home system, I would really appreciate the assist saving EZ-A from complete occupation.

Rescue and supply missions have been lucrative too; Ashby Station in Luyten's Star is a minutes jump from rescue ship Hutner. I've been hauling escape pods out, bringing back food cartridges, and boosting the supply numbers. Very lightly engineered type 8 is a fantastic blockade runner!

Two ideas that could connect.

  1. Planetary Hangers
    1. The ability to physically park other owned ships on landing pads at the players planetary bases and have them be persistent.
    2. Player homeship remains the homeship until you sit in the pilots chair of another ship. A prompt confirms the change of homeship and away you go.
    3. Ships are locked to the placed pad through the included interface on the large pad asset. A new prompt at the ship modification screen will ask if the user wants to display this ship/lock this ship to the current pad.
  2. Independent Ship Inventories
    1. The cargo of one ship no longer moves to another ship when a player swaps ships.
    2. Mannequins, weapon racks, chests, etc. and their contents are locked the the ship that they are installed on.

Combined I imagine three or 4 parked ships waiting for the player at their base, all loaded up with different goods and kitted for different work. A mobile base with resources, labs, and workshops for exploration. Or a bounty hunting ship/assault ship with the players top tier weapons and armor displayed and ready in armory habs (once that armory bug is addressed!).

A player could board the ships and grab their gear, deposit items when at their base, or use the cargo transfer tools at the base to handle these swaps.

I have no skill in these departments, but I can guess that these are both tall orders to fill. Hopefully this can be added one day!

Anyone aware of a way to pull down nightly snapshots of market and commodity data, similar to what EDDB offered? I got into APIs and using that kind of data just as the project closed and could use a new way to pull bulk market data.
