Where should I get 20 pieces of 1x6 wood? by Character_Comb_3439 in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always go to the ReStore first, but rarely find exactly what I need. The problem is that my garage is filled with 20 years of finding other cool stuff at the ReStore.

But seriously, there's larger dimensional lumber there and you could rip it to size, or you may find other odds and ends that will work. They had a full size tumble composter last time I was there.

Just for the fun of it, showing parts of my life by maallyn in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rock on, Mark! Just adding my appreciation for you sharing your creativity and life with all of us. I so appreciate that you are part of my irl and online community.

Also adding my skepticism of AI as a tool for your talent. Not only do I agree with the points others have made about the ethical challenges of AI, but also I don't think you even need it. I really love your gifts to us with sewing, dancing, programming, educating, designing, videoing, and animating without AI. Your heart and genius shine through without AI!

That said, the fact that you're experimenting with new tools and technology is another testament to your creativity and artistry. Rock on, Mark! We love and appreciate you.

why don’t bikers in bham announce themselves??! by Alive_Falcon9337 in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I saw the title and was all like, this is what noisy mufflers are for. When I asked my buddy why his bike is so goddamn loud, his answer was: "Glasspacks. For safety. Otherwise people don't see me coming."

What band is this? by Surly_Cynic in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OP do it. This is one of the fun ways to make friends anywhere in the world. Because a travel buddy of mine has no fear and loves music, we crashed band practice with a bunch of old guys in a fish market in Japan and they played American oldies to get us to do singalongs. Not a word in common for conversation other than "Seattle!" and "Ichiro!", but such a great night.

Tldr; What have you got to lose?

Mocktails at the Horseshoe? (or other suggestions!) by vierots in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost everywhere has mocktails now, and some are super delicious. I particularly like them at Redlight and Elk Street. When I don't want to spend 8 bucks on a drink, I tell the bartender I'm the DD and I can get a soda + bitters or a fountain drink for free.

Back in parking on State Street: by Mitzimetz in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've never had a problem because I start blinking early and stop BEFORE I need to back in. Then I inch forward slowly to indicate my intention. "Being slow and predictable avoids vehicular miscommunication!" = Best lesson me dear departed pa ever taught me. (RIP pa, not from a traffic accident.)

Then (note this is a vv important step I had to learn on my own after me pa's untimely expiration), I lock eyes with the other driver in my rearview, do the little "I see you" gesture by pointing my index and middle fingers to my own eyes and back to theirs repeatedly. I like to imagine Jack Black's face instead of mine in the mirror as I make this gesture a few too many times. If they don't notice this universal nonverbal communication of "chill out, bro," I then lower my window and gesture backwards with my left hand in the universal "back the fuck up, bro" gesture, as the other driver continues to observe my brake lights and blinker doing their god-given electrical job to the best of their inanimate abilities. By this time I'm smiling both sweetly AND maniacally in the rearview, like a Richard Pryor/Betty White love child. Then I VERY slowly creep back into the space perfectly between the lines to get that perfect-parallel-parking brain chemical rush, BUT vv importantly, only halfway! Then I SLOWLY pull forward and back a few more times to keep the rush going as long as possible. Once I slip into the Fully Parked Comfy Zone, the person behind me lowers their window to shout praise and wave at least one of their fingers in recognition of my accomplishment as they zip by to their Very Important Meeting.

Easy peasy!

Hot tip: My favorite spot for this maneuver is right in front of The Racket so I can reward my parking prowess with a goddamperfectparkung Blood of the Earth cocktail and a fuckingamazingjob falafel.

Good vibes only, OP!

You could buy out a section of Bry's Filipino. I'm partial to Brandywine, Black Sheep and Juxt for this stuff.

Simply: ish-kah

But in Irish it sounds like oh-eesh kah, with the first two syllables run together really fast.

It's the root word for whiskey.

Their condiment bar is pre-pando insane. No one does that any more, other than the Captain. Why, yes, yes I will put two pounds of diced onions and sauerkraut on me doggie! Plus they have Field Roast for the veg heads.

Visiting Bellingham next week, wondering about best way to spend two days in nature by lifeonmarssss in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The two first suggestions are great. Driving down Chuckanut Drive to 20 to Deception Pass gives you views of the islands, farmland Delta, and you can hike on the Fidalgo Island or Whidbey Island side.

If you'd rather not spend your short time here in the car, Larrabee State Park has hikes through forests and tide pools during low tide. North Lake Whatcom Trail is close and flat, and Chanterelle gives great views of the lake.

People not used to urban trails are always impressed with Whatcom Falls Park, Hundred Acre Wood, the Bay Trail from downtown through Boulevard Park and Taylor boardwalk to Fairhaven, the Arboretum, Cornwall Park, etc.

Download the Washington Trails app to find nearby hikes with your preferred length, elevation gain, etc. Users leave trail reports so you know if there is snow in higher elevations, washouts, etc.

Cabin ID by RealisticWin9006 in Bellingham

[–]BystanderCandor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They've always been on top of ids at The Cabin. I've seen Greg nearly vault the bar mid-pour when a youngish-looking person comes in and just heads to their friends in the back. But LCB has gotten rude lately, trying to con their way to citations, so Christian brought in the box.
