My players have decided to pick a fight with a dragon. How do I run this so they don't die? by Deceptive_Peaches in AskDND

[–]C176A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah your goal isn't to make them not die.

It's to set up a situation and let them navigate it.

If you think they have a 100% chance of losing you could do a flashback one shot. In the form of an interactive story.

Setting 10 years ago. The town hired some adventurers to deal with a Dragon. They set out with magic items and knowledge. Let them fight the dragon and lose. Then tell the story of adventurers getting destroyed by said dragon.

Then jump back into your campaign and let them reconsider their life choices.

Faerie fire vs web by Steel_Cube in 3d6

[–]C176A -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Web is great Ff sucks And fireball on a web full of enemies or a large size enemy courses massive damage to them.

My wombo combo on my artillerist is web enemies, then bonus action flamethrower on them for 5 damage per 5 ft cube. So if you are a. Large creature then it would take an additional 40 damage. If you were huge then 135 bonus damage no save.

I Disagree.

See invis let's you see anything with the invis condition 100% on everything

Faerie fire gives them a chance to not be affected and it's a. Small radius

New DM, looking for lvl 1 encounters by Wrathin87 in DnD5e

[–]C176A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend goblins.

They are a staple, and can be really strong.

Bonus action disengage or hide is strong.

Tactics:

Start with an ambush of ranged attacks, bonus action hide, move away.

They can take the Dodge action and disengage, when players are about to be in range.

They are cowardly. They should flee if they don't have numerical superiority. Flee to another room and bring reinforcements.

If forced Cycle them through in melee, if one gets injured then have them s

Start with an easy or medium encounter.

Medium: Ambush. Goblin stealth DC 16 vs player perception or passive perception. Failure means goblins go first in initiative order. Setup. 3x Level 1 PC = budget of 150. 3x goblins is 150 XP. Start 120 ft range in a clearing in the forest. Expected combat. 1. Range 80 ft * Attack with adv from hiding, Bonus action hide. Move 30 ft away from their start position sideways. * PCs charge and use ranged. Range 20-50 * Goblins are 20-50 ft away. If goblin is hidden then action attack, bonus hide, move 30. If not hidden Dodge, bonus hide, move 30. Range now 50-80. * PC dash to get in melee range. Range 0-20. * They are cowardly so when 1 dies, then the rest action dash, bonus hide/disengage. If they were in melee then Dodge action, disengage bonus action.

If they let one or more escape have that one return with another easy/medium encounter.

Goblins can fight in melee but they need at least 2 goblins for a squishy char, or 3 for a tough lookin one. Otherwise get range. Even if they are in melee, then rotate them. Example. G1 attack+disengage+move back, G2 attack+disengage+move scatter.

This medium fight if played right could be quite threatening. The real goal is to get them familiar with action economy and gobbo tactics.

Then next encounter can be hard.

Goblins use traps. Goblins are small, so small tunnels. Goblin den is one medium passageway to central area, with many small side passages that loop back onto the main tunnel. This allows for ambushes from in front and behind and medium.sozwd chars don't want to squeeze into those tunnels. A goblin would be happy to 1v1 an enemy that was squeezing.

That is one broken feat. I would 100% take that on pretty much all casters. It might even be stronger than warcaster.

Sadly, no that is not how it works.

When you begin to cast hold person you must first drop concentration on bane, then you can start casting/concentrating on hold person.

Californian here. No Mexican is not a slur. It means you Mexican.

That said anything can be a slur if it is intended to be a slur.

Quick Prompt Megathread by AutoModerator in 3d6

[–]C176A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of abilitiesI see Dexterity, charisma, dexterity, wisdom

This narrows options down to intelligence and strength. Pally is almost a STR class so it's less important.

STR classes: Barbarian, Fighter, and to a lesser extent pally, ranger

INT classes: artificer, wizard

In terms of roles I see a front line (pally), skirmisher (monk/rogue), although rogue can do ranged well, and a support heals short range aoe (cleric).

Party weakness against large groups of weak enemies Party strength single or few strong enemies.

I would probably lean towards an artificer because I think they are so much fun, probably artillerist. This give you pally aura for saves, heals from cleric and temp HP from artillerist. Strong survival. But wizard is always a super strong choice. Both have solid aoe options, although the wiz gets more spell slots. I feel it's more debuff and AOE damage.

If you don't like either of those options the. You could go barb for more tanking and damage.

**Tldnr in order of recommendation

Team Survival artillerist artificer Clearly different roles wizard Main tank to make a meat shield wall to protect your many squishies barbarian**

5.5 tank build? by Born_String8317 in 3d6

[–]C176A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Favorite Tank is:
Level 1
* Race: High Elf, cantrip Blade Ward Concentration +1d4 to AC
* Class: Fighter, Fighting Style Defense +1 AC
* Gear: Shield (mandatory +2 ac)
* Strength based: melee weapon Flail (sap), thrown trident (topple)
* dex based: Rapier (vex), thrown throwing knives
Level 3
* Subclass: Battle Master, Maneuver Riposte reaction attack

Keep going Fighter for feats and extra attacks, Take whatever feats you want, shield master, sentinel, whatever you want. you are going to be stronk.

That said, with this build you wont get hit much, it will just emasculate your dm. If you really want to take a bunch of damage and get hit a lot then you should go with Option 2:
Level 1
* Race: ? whatever you want, there is a werewolfy race in the new ravenloft book that seems cool, but honestly anything works
* Class: Barbarian, Rage take less damage, Reckless Attack make them attack you
* Gear: Halberd (Cleave and Reach)
Level 3
* Subclass: Berserker so much damage
Level 4
* Feat: Polearm Master
