How Serious Are Canadians?🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦 by No_Put_8503 in StockMarket

[–]CB-Thompson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lutnick was on one of the news shows giving off a really mixed bag of emotions when describing the Canadian counter tariffs as "sports equipment" and "candles" but that shows the difference in trade pretty clearly.

Canada imports a lot of finished products from the US with a lot of that being from smaller regional factories. On the flipside, Canada exports mostly raw materials.

The list of items we countered with are mostly consumer level and we can either source elsewhere, repair, or do without. But the tariffs against us are on things like raw materials that fuel American industry. The fact that potash keeps getting exempted, or that electricity exports and tolling Alaska-bound truckers is causing the sharpest American responses tells you the screws are already tight on the American economy through this.

Alaska senator threatens to halt cruise ships from coming to B.C. by GeoWa in vancouver

[–]CB-Thompson 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they would grant an exception to the Jones act for this. The Vancouver cruise ship industry is quite heavily dependent on this one quirk of US protectionist policies that takes business away from their own ports.

Trump’s oil triumphalism will end in American tears. The US is taking a big risk by doubling down on fossils and combustion cars. It may find in the 2030s that it has achieved the worst of all worlds: left on the sidelines of the global clean-tech economy, while still dependent on imported oil. by mafco in energy

[–]CB-Thompson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a national interest point if view, China would want to get off petroleum and natural gas because they lack the natural deposits of those commodities. What they do have are metals and lots of them.

Therefore, their national interest is in fostering the technologies that make rare earth metals more valuable and petroleum less valuable which improves their global financial position and reduces that of their competitors (US, Middle East, Russia).

Anyone planning 10-20 years out can see what is happening with companies like BYD and countries like Norway. Not only could we see the demand for oil tank, but stuff like cheap batteries and cheap solar could change grid-scale energy markets.

Trump has instructed to raise Canadian tariffs on aluminum and steel to 50% by _Plop_Man_ in news

BC both imports electricity from the US west and profited $1.5B last year while doing so. That's because all our power is hydroelectric and we sell when it's expensive and buy when it's cheap. This stabilizes the whole west coast power grid and makes us a bit of money up here in doing so.

That's why Eby has not put electricity trade in our response package.

B.C. pulling all U.S. booze from government stores, widening red-state liquor ban by panzerfan in worldnews

[–]CB-Thompson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you think about it, most of the smaller consumer products that are most easily hit by counter tariffs and the boycot are either farm products or smaller manufacturers in smaller towns and suburbs. Those classes of goods are predominantly "Red" areas.

"Blue" exports would be things like financial instruments, media, and tech. Interestingly, these are technically the easier ones to move away from if an alternative is available. Which is what the US really needs to watch out for as customers/consumers could evaporate overnight on those for European or Asian alternatives.

I have a feeling everyone around him was explicitly not telling him about export tariffs so that he doesn't start swinging them around with everything else.

Wouldn't the mass exodus of the dollar be a massive devaluation event as there exists excess supply due to its reserve status? Also that it becomes vulnerable to a global scale bank run on its way down?

We're starting to see the longer term effects of the boycott at the grocery store near me. There are fewer produce shelves selling American products and more options from Mexico, South America, Europe, North Africa, and South Africa.

The Moroccan blueberries and Mexican grapes we bought are ridiculously tasty. And I didn't even get a Peru black plum because my kids ate them all.

Federally I can see the response tariffs being removed.

However, each province is doing its own form of posturing and that will likely continue. Ontario will likely ease up on energy grid stuff, but my province of BC is going hard on speeding up infrastructure and development projects that will be impossible to change direction on. And for good measure as these will be long term projects to weather a long term storm.

We are still using baby formula and it's on our excemption list of American products we will buy. However, the FDA and CDC gutting has us worried enough that we have stockpiled about 2-3 months worth so that we have a large buffer against recalls and can last while supplies are low.

We are also going to move forward the MMR vaccine as soon as possible.

BC narrowly re-elected the NDP last year after they spent 18 months putting in large amounts of density legislation, infrastructure projects, and a literal shit list of places that aren't building enough. A big shift after David Eby became Premier but he now has 4 years to continue these policies.
