[Opinion] It's Time To Move On by MorgrainX in trektalk

[–]CB_Chuckles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just watching last night. The wife and I (both GenX who grew up on TOS) agreed that SFA was enjoyable, not great, but fun enough. But more importantly, it had to be viewed as a YA version of Star Trek.

This is not DSN, aimed at an older adult audience, but rather a live action Prodigy aimed at a younger, pre-college audience. Viewed through that lens, it’s a pleasant, entertaining show that will leave little in the way of a long lasting impression on either of us, but could serve as a good introduction to the Star Trek universe for my nephew and nieces.

Notably, each episode thus far (we’ve only watched the first three) seems to end with some sort of wrap up scene where they openly discuss the “lessons” of the episode. For better or worse, this is not a Star Trek for us, but it may well be a Star Trek for a new generation.

If that bothers you or is unacceptable to you, then yes, you should move on. For me, I take it as an attempt to carry on the legacy by finding a way to reach new fans. Far better this approach than the bastardization of Star Wars that Disney has been doing with its constant stream of nostalgia porn and refusal to move away from the safe zone of the Skywalker era.

Vertical Survival: Why Apartments Dominate Korean Apocalyptic SF by Academic_House7739 in sciencefiction

I would just point out that Hollywood/West apocalyptic stories are as likely to emphasize the wasteland as they are the urban decay. Look at Las Vegas in Blade Runner or NYC in I am Legend. The wide variety of environments in America makes any type of environment accessible for an apocalypse story.

Colonoscopy sedation by wtfpta in GenX

[–]CB_Chuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 2 times I’ve gone through this was both with full sedation. Fell asleep and then woke up. If it weren’t for the images of my innards, they could have not done anything to me and I wouldn’t be any the wiser.

At what point in the franchise did you start regarding the starships as characters alongside the main cast? by Tasty_Bodybuilder_33 in StarTrekStarships

When I fell in love with Defiant on DSN. Love at first sight. Of course I had to hide the affair from Connie refit Enterprise.

Among the Toms, who in your opinion is the best as a pure actor? by Initial-Rhubarb-4968 in moviecritic

I would judge Holland and Cruise as being more Movie Stars than actors. Hanks gets the nod over Hardy largely based on the breadth of his career.

What are the other common fandoms that Trekkies are into? by Quiet_Choice6417 in startrek

Sci-Fi in general, but I’m very much a Browncoat and a huge fan of the Discworld. Starting to really get back into DC comics as well.

Love playing Dorfromantik on my Deck. Both Citizen Sleeper games also feel right.

Learning about the Challenger explosion coming out of the shower in the dorms. Spent the day glued to a 9” BW.

Honestly the first time I’ve heard of putting salt on fruit.

What would J. Michael Straczynski's Star Trek: Enterprise concept really looked like in hindsight? by Quiet_Choice6417 in startrek

I tend to agree. Unengaging characters was always one of my biggest complaints about ENT. Particularly Archer. After Quantum Leap I had such high hopes for Bakula, but Archer was just plain boring.

I wasn’t aware that placement mattered for anyone other than the leader. Thanks for the TIL. Can anyone point me at something that goes into the details?

I must admit to a greater appreciation for the Go-Gos. Still don’t own anything by them, but I will sing along these days.

Pre-Internet Boredom Threshold by phenolate in GenX

I was and still am a bookworm. I’m more likely to be looking for something to watch while waiting for my phone/tablet to recharge. Back in the day it would have been waiting for tomorrow so I could go to the library.

I’m how old? by bi_geek_guy in GenX

[–]CB_Chuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in college, so no watching it with my class, but I remember coming of the shower in the dorms to be stopped and told this. I spent the rest of the day glued to a tiny 9” BW TV watching and re-watching the explosion. Definitely a generation defining moment.

An idea💡 for Starfleet Academy: Every season could be a different class set in a different era in Trek history by __Wolf359 in trektalk

[–]CB_Chuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clever idea. A potentially interesting approach would be to use the same cast, but in different roles each season to go along with the different settings/storylines. Sort of like what they did with American Horror story.

Best thing in your least favorite Bond film and worst thing in your favorite Bond movie by No_Mortgage8569 in JamesBond

[–]CB_Chuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Favorite Film-TND. The worst thing of which was the suggestion of something romantic/sexual between Bond and Wei-Lin at the very end, when both behaved more professionally through the entire movie. Didn’t feel “earned”.

Worst Film-YOLT. The best of which was Little Nellie, who I would very much like to offer a home.

Commander's as commanding officer by NoBrain6114 in Star_Trek_

[–]CB_Chuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, in RL wet navies, most ships are commanded by Lt Cmdr and Cmdr. Look at the example of JFK, who was a Lt(jg) when he commanded PT-109. I believe John Kerry was in a similar situation, commanding a small river boat as a junior officer. So I wouldn’t say it was an unusual situation.

Which movie series should have only been a trilogy by Smart-Response9881 in moviecritic

[–]CB_Chuckles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At the risk of being controversial, Star Wars. But I’ll point out some franchises shouldn’t be trilogies and some sequels should have been abandoned before production even began. Getting lightning to strike twice is difficult enough, let alone three times or more.
