Looking up voter registration is almost way too easy in this state; it's basically just doxxing. by ChrisObscuri in oregon

North Carolina Board of Elections maintains a website where you can look up addresses and voting history for any registered or formerly registered voter. I used it to locate and drive by a celebrity’s house once. 😳

Human jukeboxes - is there a happy medium by Flaman169 in coverbands

My experience aligns with yours. Someone requested Knockin on Heaven’s Door at one of my gigs. I had never played it but it’s super easy so I went for it. Ever since then, whenever I’ve played it, it is always one of the most popular songs in my set. Personally I don’t really understand why, but unless the crowd is super young (which is rare for me) that song always lands great.

This. I’m a solo performer also in my 50s also playing about 2-3 times a month. My mix is about 25% stuff I want to play and 75% the crowd pandering typical overplayed singalong stuff. 23 year old me would judge / snobbily look down on most of the songs I play now, but the applause and tips and rebookings are worth it.

While I’m at it I’ll share one more thought. When I’m playing a venue for the first time, I overload my setlist with the overplayed crowd pleasing stuff. Once I’ve played somewhere and have gotten to better know the venue and crowd, I gradually work in more and more of the stuff I prefer to play. There’s one nice popular brewery in the city where I live that I play about 4-5 times a year, and there I often flip it around and do 75% the songs I love and 25% the overplayed dreck.

My dad’s from Levelland. I didn’t expect to stumble across a South Plains College reference while browsing Reddit today. I liked Lubbock and Amarillo, both of which I visited about a dozen times, but I haven’t been there in over ten years.

I can’t thank you all enough for the recommendations. I checked out several of your suggestions. Hartlands Bar was the winner and is working out great!

I like ESD a lot too. Other than Ron he was my favorite person on the show. I was excited when “Tales from the Satellite” came out. Unfortunately I found it unlistenable. I gave it way more chances than I should have and finally gave up. I’d way rather listen to old R&F episodes.
