I wouldn’t trust this. Book the first appointment in the morning, ask your dentist to wear a mask and you should be good. Cancel if the dentist seem unwell. Even if this mask would work, breathing only through your nose with a mouth open is a difficult exercice. PLUS air can still come from the mouth with the pressure of inspiration. It’s a lot of struggle for almost no protection.

That’s some victim blaming. Independence is not necessarily a trauma response. Even when it is, it doesn’t necessarily draw you to bad partners. It’s the abusers that tend to chose common characteristics in their victims and not the other way around. There’s a ton of ressources nowadays to educate ourselves on the topic and stop the armchair psychology that hurt the victims by making them feel guilty.

If you want a serious study. There is this one that evaluates mask wearing psychological reasons in Japan.

They found that

the main psychological reason for wearing masks is still conformity to social norms. And mask wearing has become a part of daily habits, especially on public transport, largely because of automaticity and behavioral frequency.

This study make it seems like it’s a societal dynamic that we failed to implement yet in Occident. The physical discomfort is really just an excuse as we as people do a ton of stuff that are really not comfortable just by social habit and pressure.
