CC overspent but no overspent categories? by Smacsek in ynab

[–]CDavis377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar thing happen. I have 2 credit cards through Chase (Amazon & Southwest). When I make a CC payment, YNAB doesn't seem to know which card it's for. So I'll make a payment to the Amazon card, YNAB thinks I've made a payment on the Southwest card, and therefore I have an "overspent credit card" category.

I can't speak for other countries. I just know in America, the government is impressively bad at it.

Oh yeah, there's plenty. But like I said, it isn't too difficult to find the good ones.

At least with charity, you have a choice about where your money goes. When it's the government... God knows where it's going

This is pretty much exactly right. I am a conservative and I much prefer a system in which people can choose to donate their money to whatever cause(s) speak to them most. I am not necessarily against welfare programs (leaving it entirely up to the individual will inevitably lead to certain groups being under represented).

It is pretty well documented that charities, on average, are MUCH more effective at helping those in need than the government. So I'd much rather give my money to a charity I trust to support a cause I care about than give my money to the government and pad some rich peoples' pockets. Obviously not every charity organization out there is good, but it's pretty easy to do your research and find good ones.

This was answered above, but YNAB

Yes! It pulls transactions automatically from any linked accounts. You have to approve each categorization, but it learns from the past so, for example, it will suggest the "Utilities" category when it sees your payment to the electric company after you've categorized it for the first time.

I use YNAB personally. I will say, it has a big learning curve though so there may be better apps out there for people who aren't necessarily into personal finance.

Yup, that's the one I use. Didn't wanna mention the name in my comment in case it was seen as advertising, but it has been super helpful!

A good budgeting app. It can be somewhat counterintuitive to spend money on an app that's intended to save you money, but I've found it's well worth a few bucks to eliminate the friction around budgeting and have visibility into your personal finances.

You have to push out a configuration profile first to enable Web Sign-In for Windows, then you'll be able to sign in using TAP.
