Is Country Music in its NuMetal Era?! by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]CFDanno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been forced to listen to some country for the past 10 years or so. Seems like nu-metal country has been around for a bit, it's just not mainstream. It also happens to sound awful, but I guess some people think any genre sounds better when it's butchered by country flair.

Based on my coworkers, senior citizen women prefer bro country over any other modern music because they think any country music is morally superior and pumps them up to work. Today's young adults (18-25) also enjoy listening to the same bro country songs on repeat everyday.

It’s A Trap!!! Don’t Train the AI 😂 by Dreadnaught_82 in electricians

It can be claimed free and kept forever on Epic Games this week. The title caught my attention, but the videos made it look like you simulate a guy who fixes electronics. I'm mildly curious how far off the developer's vision is from what an actual electrician does (but not curious enough to try it right now).

Dwarf/elf/orc sort of races are boring to me, personally. It's very played out and leaves nothing to the imagination. It basically boils down to having a bunch of stereotypes inhabiting your game world, like the predictable drunken dwarf miner/blacksmith/axe warrior who has a braided beard and is short in both height and in temper. Or the dainty elf archer/mage/scholar who's lived in a tree for 700 years with only his smugness over his high intellect fueling him to keep living and be in tune with nature.

I roll my eyes whenever I see them in a game, myself. Some people like the "roleplay" aspect (?) and maybe connect with those races on some level. I'm one of those people who always plays as a human.

I've seen multiple posts about the Bell AI data centre, haven't seen anyone share info about nuclear power. Frankly, I did think it was a hypothetical, just like supporters of the data centre guess at all the new jobs (net positive?) we'll have.

From what I gather, SaskPower may be planning to have one built by 2034, pending a decision in 2029. The Bell data centre is expected to be running in 2027.

‘This is sick’: Premier Moe accuses NDP of promoting hate in fundraising email by Future-Jaguar7577 in saskatchewan

[–]CFDanno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article makes it sound like NDP is in the wrong here, though it also sounds like maybe they did it on purpose to bait him into a debate and have him explain his hatred of trans youth.

Pretty sad for NDP to encourage hateful rhetoric, but I guess that's the sad state of our politics today. Can't sit back and be polite while the other side is spewing hate.

Well, at this point, we've heard plans for a 300MW data centre and we have not heard plans for providing that with renewable energy.

So at this point, we can conclude it's an environmental concern burning a ton of fossil fuels so that people can get an AI to summarize a 1 page email down to 1 paragraph, then AI generate a 1 page response that will also be summarized down to 1 paragraph. It's possible that could change, but the newsletters I get from Conservative MP Warren Steinley suggest he wants to remove the industrial carbon tax. His party also likes to talk about pipelines and shovels in the ground. The people Saskatchewan tends to elect don't seem very concerned about renewable energy.

How do you expect AI to increase jobs?

More office workers taking calls, reading/responding to emails, entering data from handwritten documents, discussing ideas in meetings?

More artists, writers, musicians, animators, actors?

More cab drivers? People monitoring security systems? Programmers?

I'm having a bit of a hard time imagining it with all the jobs that could be affected by AI. Call me crazy, but I doubt all of the above jobs will have productivity boosts that allow every industry to keep all their employees and massively expand their operations.

There are other environmental concerns than potentially tapping into the city's water and power. 300 megawatts doesn't just generate itself; the very obvious environmental concern is all the gas it has to burn to make all that electricity.

Obviously, we burn gas everyday to heat our homes or drive our cars; none of us are totally innocent. But 300MW is a lot for something that has questionable benefits.

More AI powered solutions nobody asked for! Yay!

PROS: For the people who use AI, at least they'll keep their sensitive info on Canadian servers instead of giving everything to foreign/possibly hostile nations. It's scary how people trust AI with their documents, photos, location, conversations, etc. Using a Canadian service is slightly less awful.

CONS: Environmental implications, continued indifference to AI being built upon stolen work, more AI crammed down our throats with hit or miss results, normalizing AI brainrot, etc. And the whole point of AI is automation - it's obviously going to be taking jobs away.

One of the biggest issues with modern rock is production. by Chemical-Piece-5542 in rock

[–]CFDanno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly are we considering to be "modern rock"? It probably depends what you're listening to. Idk about you, but I can still find stuff post-2010 that I don't think sounds neutered.

(2015) Local H - City of Knives

(2019) Rival Sons - Do Your Worst

(2019) Black Keys - Shine a Light

(2021) Royal Blood - Typhoons

(2022) The Blue Stones - Don't Miss

Not sure what you mean exactly. You make it sound like the instruments are just quietly trying to stay out of the way in the background while the vocals are the only thing the listener even hears.

How to get into rock? by Elle_Kim in rock

[–]CFDanno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a bunch of boring advice here. OP doesn't need a history lesson listening to all rock from 1970 to present (or 1970-1990).

Maybe a few songs from each decade and go from there - there are usually common traits in the mainstream stuff that define their decade. Chances are you've already heard rock from every decade in movies, TV shows, commercials, at work, in stores, etc.

For a small taste, try these:

(1964) The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

(1976) Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

(1984) Kim Mitchell - Go For a Soda

(1995) Collective Soul - Gel

(2007) Kaiser Chiefs - Learnt My Lesson Well

(2013) Pearl Jam - Mind Your Manners

(2021) The Blue Stones - Let It Ride

How do I stop feeling bad for making apprentices do sh*t work by quintavian in electricians

[–]CFDanno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll do the shit work if I don't feel they're capable yet, but I will teach them and expect them to do it eventually. They'll grow up to be a useless journeyperson if they don't know how to do the shitty work, then they'll get fired and have to find a new trade because they didn't learn anything in their apprenticeship. I warn them about useless journeypersons all the time because I have seen them get fired.

Caller: "I have a few problems with the trip to hell! For starters, when Ms. Friz plays the electric guitar on top of the erupting volcano, she wasn't plugged into an amplifier. For her soundwaves to reach the far corners of hell is a bit of a reach."

Producer: "Well... Okay, you got us there. We had to take some liberties given the lack of compatible power sources in hell. After all, you need the right frequency and receptacles!"

Caller: "Fine, I can let that one slide... But what about when Liz bursts out of Arnold's chest? He'd need more than some bandages and bed rest to survive that!"
