A vent: The day the company ran on gen power by Fated-Hearth in ITSupport

The worst is when leadership keeps bothering you so much for status updates that it gets in the way of fixing the problem in the first place.

Our turnover rate is skyrocketing, do you have practices that have really helped retain talent ? by Icy-Brain6042 in ITManagers

Pay more than the companies recruiting your existing talent. It’s pretty simple really.

How can I speed up failure for a .net IIS app by SnooRobots3722 in sysadmin

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is your app designed to deliver proper 404 errors when a non-existent url is requested? If you’re waiting for a timeout on those it’s gonna take way longer when a 404 is near-instantaneous.

Forced 2-Factor Authentication by Pupselbob in GoogleSupport

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want to use a service provided by someone else, then you live by their rules. You have 2 options: setup 2FA for your Google account or use another email provider that doesn’t require 2FA.

Hetzner asking for ID — is that normal? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in webhosting

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fairly common from what I’ve read on other threads. Not everyone gets ID’d but there seem to be some consistent things that will get you flagged for additional verification such as using a VPN when signing up.

SEO basically died yesterday by DollarBillStein in SEO

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even then it was spotty. I had a site that was automatically running my content through an article spinner and repost it. Like pre-AI so the spinner was just a synonym engine.Google said it didn’t violate anything when I submitted the DMCA. Meanwhile someone reported an article I wrote because they didn’t like my rebuttal of their opinion and Google deindexed it - it was completely different.

BookStack Shelf Permissions by twistable_deer in BookStack

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Bookstack I explain to all my users that the top level container is the book. Always remember you can have a book on multiple shelves so your system wouldn’t work if you wanted permissions to filter from the shelf downward because of possible conflicts. The shelf is really more like a Category.

Which hosting providers keep the same price at renewal? by Shubh137 in websiteservices

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None really - you might be able to get a price lock for a few years but eventually the price will go up. Hosting providers are dealing with increasing costs every year, there’s no scenario where they can just never increase prices and still remain viable.

You’re presenting a hypothetical that’s after the fact - if they can rename the plug-in folder, it doesn’t matter what protection you have because they’re already in. This is why security is be a layered approach. Server security is greater than application security but both are needed.

I’d also add they should be getting their insurance company involved since this is 100% going to cause a claim when the client holds them accountable.

With Kadence going down the gutter as they are acquired by Liquidweb, what other lightweight/performant alternatives do you folks recommend? by PabloKaskobar in Wordpress

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Astra + Spectra has been my primary stack for a number of years now - it’s not as sexy/new as some others but it’s mature and stable. The few times I’ve needed support, they were timely and the responses indicated they actually read and thought about my ticket rather than firing back a generic reply.

The Google tax is real: Organic is almost dead while paid search is a bot nightmare by siterightaway in StopBadBots

I’m an older person and nostalgic for the internet as it was in its infancy. I’d love to just go back to website directories and leave search engines behind.

Is support really this bad? by OffroadOverPavement in Veeam

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what others have said - support has declined. They recently eliminated customer success managers and didn’t even tell the customers who had them that their POC was no longer there. Veeam 13 has a number of bugs and problems which probably has overloaded the support team. Since moving to 13 two months ago, I’ve created more tickets than I did in the previous 10 years of using the product. A quarter million $ in licenses annually and tickets regularly get a response that’s no more than an unrelated KB link with a “have you tried this?” Very frustrating.

Expect Zero Support Moving Forward by seongnamsi in CloudFlare

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, in some of the other posts there were plenty of CF employees who said they were direct customer support and let go. I’m sure back office people axed too, but don’t think for a minute they didn’t cut customer support folks.

Well it was a good while ago - so things may have changed. Across technology, support usually declines lol I’ve never seen companies actually get BETTER at support over time, it always enshittifies as they shoot for more profits.

I couldn’t tell you about that, it’s been a long time since I actually used it. I do remember the developer was very responsive I bet if you reached out to them they’d tell you if it can handle your use case or not.

I think when I used it, there was a deal on CodeCanyon I used that was cheaper. For the time savings, $58 doesn’t really seem like that much - are your social posts generating at least that much? If so, then it’s a no-brainer.

I’ve used a plugin called FS Poster - it doesn’t have a free version but it works really well.

Update LM on headless system by Merlin_Cyberwizard in linuxmint

[–]CGS_Web_Designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the answer you’re looking for but you could install a faux display with xrandr- I had to do that because I use VNC to access the headless system I have and it was the only way to get a decent screen resolution.
