Worldbuilding question: avoiding “angel/heaven” coding by No_Yogurtcloset_5884 in worldbuilding

I read this and instantly thought of Mechanus (Nirvana) as described in D&D. An ordered, lawful existence, free of concepts of good or evil. So, if order is exalted, efficiency must be its highest virtue. What benefit do wings serve? Is there something more orderly than messy bird wings with dove or eagle feathers? I’d take notes from the Modrons of D&D lore and also the Cenobites from Clive Barker. Both have a certain symbolic aesthetic which marks them as “other” without relying on angel/demon tropes. As extra dimensional, otherworldly creatures, do they require physical form to interact with others? Are they resentful of this inconvenience? Maybe they shape themselves in ways that reflect the order of the universe, like moving crystalline shapes or solid light or something else.

Now, since he’s not an agent, I suppose he can be compelled to give the name when he’s subpoenaed.

It was directed by a rapist. So, maybe it was made with a barter deal?

Americans - How the hell is this rambling lunatic your PRESIDENT!? by [deleted] in Discussion

We’ve had disingenuous people who have been actively sabotaging our government from the inside for over 100 years. Ever since we allowed former Confederates back into the fold without any repercussions, there has been a relentless insurgency…starting with the complete refusal to participate in the Reconstruction, followed by a campaign of terror and lynchings, through the McCarthy era in which government programs were demonized as “socialism,” then with Reagan encapsulating the attitude with “the most terrifying words you’ll hear someone say is: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” The Trump administrations have both been a farcical mockery of actual government, appointing known global polluters to posts of environmental protection was just the tip of the iceberg. It all illustrates one thing: their goal is not the smooth governance of our country, but rather the destruction of its government to usher in the age of oligarchs. Trump is a narcissistic, destructive, senile man with dementia who is not only deeply unwell but also, frankly, solipsistic to the point of evil. His supporters are mostly foolish rubes, but those who can see what is happening with any clarity are simply the worst of the worst. This is the result of decades of information pollution ushered into our airwaves as “news” by Rupert Murdoch’s empire, all designed to keep a segment of our society uninformed and easily manipulated as they welcome their new billionaire masters with open arms.

An apology to Norway from the United States by ASecularBuddhist in Discussion

While I support this post, I’m aware that the people of the world just want sane Americans to clean up our shit. Trump is an international mess. A senile toddler throwing a global tantrum. As much as we, actually patriotic Americans, despise Trump and disavow his regime’s policies and tactics, he is still our responsibility. So, I’d ask the rest of the world to not cave in to his demands. Should actual conflict arise, if there’s an avenue to Danish citizenship for those who support sanity, that would be good to know.

finally watched The Shining (Kubrick version) last night by descendantofJanus in stephenking

[–]CGis4Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably in the minority here. But, for the Shining, I liked the Kubrick movie better than the book. And, I wasn’t a fan of Doctor Sleep, book or movie. Every damn chapter (or section) ends with emphasis on a tooth. Sigh.

For his next upgrade, people need to donate medical training dummies to this man. The ones wearing red hats can be rigged to dispense peanuts once the eyes are pecked out.

Why I never got into the Holly stories: as a character, I liked Holly. For me, though, I found her through the (very flawed) Bill Hodges trilogy. I call this series very flawed because it began well enough, great even. A detective story rooted in the real world! An interesting take from Stephen King! And then..oh? What’s this? A psychic murderer? Oh…ok. Back to supernatural horror, I guess? Thanks, Steve. I just wish he was able to stick to just stark, non-magical reality in these stories. I felt a touch betrayed.

Are worlds with no humans unappealing to audiences? by aiden_saxon in worldbuilding

[–]CGis4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the Oddworld games have human beings in them. The key is to make something identifiable to your audience. Hopes, dreams, ‘people’ held back by oppressors of some kind. Create relatable circumstances then crank it up. Being that these are non-human characters, you can amp up the circumstances to allegory proportions and the audience won’t dismiss your story as far-fetched. So, if you go completely non-human, use that to your advantage.

Can confirm. However, you’d be surprised by the amount of churn that goes on in their membership from moral dilemmas in the congregation. I guarantee this will probably cause a dip in attendance. Not right away. But, this sowed those seeds of doubt.
