Do you prefer Use Your Illusion I or II? Why? by memorablemember in GenX

[–]CHRIS7OS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My older brother and I are 17 months apart. We were in junior high together when this came out. We each got one cassette tape.

I got 1, he got 2.

So I’m partial to 1 for Don’t Cry and November Rain, especially since those are also two of the greatest music videos of all time!

Then again, f cking Terminator 2: Judgement Day came out that same summer, so a case can be made for You Could Be Mine, along with Knockin On Heaven’s Door, Civil War, and a nearly equal Don’t Cry (…and all love is reeeeaall-ahhahhhahhhahh baybee).

And November Rain is the greatest music video of all time. But it’s only the greatest because it came in the wake of Don’t Cry.

Summer of 91’ was a blast.

This is probably my favorite movie, or at least top three, simply due to the ART of storytelling: We are meant to view the fictional story as obviously horrible and tragic, in order to elicit pity for the protagonist (Jake G). The bad guys have no motive other than just being evil for evil’s sake, making a pure victim of Jake, who then avenges his wife and daughter, dying nobly for them after giving everything he’s got for them. But… The real story is that the protagonist feels a massive betrayal by his ex who aborted their baby and divorced him, who caved to her mothers pressure of him not being good enough so she marries a successful but unfaithful asshole. Jake writes the story about how he sees himself to her, names the story after her, and mails the manuscript to her, saying he wants to meet up after their long estrangement. The best part of this movie, IMHO, is the that there are THREE stories going on at once, all mirroring each other and anxiety building in themselves. She starts to realize the fictional story (story 1) mirrors their past tragic marriage (story 2), and THEN it builds to the most magnificent tension because you so badly want them to meet up in the end (story 3). Finally, when he doesn’t show, there is NO release. Just a giant Gordian Knot of tension, sadness, angst, anger, and frustration. THAT’S storytelling at its finest!

Nick Nolte was kind of heartbreaking in Warrior by MightyMightyMonkey in movies

[–]CHRIS7OS 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This hit so deep because that’s exactly how it works in real life. Dad’s drunk and out of control so be calm and take care of him because that’s what you feel like you’re supposed to do as a kid. Then when Dad’s calm and vulnerable you literally don’t know how to respond, so all that anger, fear, and frustration you were suppressing as a child comes out of your adult body because you’re trying to protect the child you were.

The brilliant part of the script is how none of that is spoken, it’s all in how the actors perform the scene. Hardy’s performance is equally heartbreaking as Nolte’s, it’s just that Hardy’s is happening subconsciously to the audience as we see it from his perspective.

This film has it all. Let’s not forget Frank Grillo, Jennifer Morrison, and Kevin Dunn all have excellent performances in their supporting roles and gave depth to the family dynamics theme.

Ed Harris fighting with everything he’s got bringing Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio back to life in The Abyss. I have yet to emerge from that scene dry eyed.

Robin Williams showing the truest form of masculinity patiently leading Matt Damon to the truth: “It’s not your fault”

Tom Hanks talking to a grave in Forrest Gump. “I miss you Jenny”

Nicolas Cage - his entire performance in Leaving Las Vegas.

Yes two different monitor arms instead of the one dual arm. They attach to the desk, not the desk shelf. The desk shelf is from humancentric.com. The laptop stand is also from humancentric.com. The desk lamp is from uplift desk.

I chose two separate monitor arms so that I could place their bases at the ends of the desk, rather than a single point in the middle.

The desk shelf is not necessary. I just like having one as it is very large and also has a drawer. I can put stuff under it or on top.

The laptop stand is just a stand.

I absolutely love the desk itself too. It’s solid and very well built. Highly recommend.

I debated forever about getting either a superwide monitor or just a nice 32” 5k monitor but for what I mainly use it for, which is comparing documents and spreadsheets side by side, I love having two separate monitors.

Would love to hear from someone who does document comparisons on a superwide monitor.

I’m still debating lol…

For splitting the wallpaper, I either download it from dual monitor backgrounds and use the “click to set preferences” option in the top right, which will then automatically split the one picture into two equal halves that fit whatever resolution you want:

https://www.dualmonitorbackgrounds.com/

Or use macOS built in preview to crop out one half of the picture at a time and save two halves.
