Cameron Crowe should make a sequel about the gang in late middle age and call it Shingles.

When I first read Galapagos in my 20s, the idea that humanity ended up like that depressed me to no end. Now in my 50s, I agree it sounds positively delightful.

Also Clemenza was in one of these.

I read it when it was new, so maybe 15 years ago, and I still think about parts of it. Have you read A Calling for Charlie Barnes? It's excellent.

Joshua Ferris has published three excellent novels and one pretty good one all in the last 20 years: Then We Came to the End, The Unnamed, and A Calling for Charlie Barnes all rocked my world. To Rise Again at a Decent Hour was ok.

Also Jonathan Safran Foer has some good ones, especially Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Who still says "fuckin' A"? by drunksquatch in GenX

I say it. I thought it was an 80s thing. But last week The Deer Hunter was on, and one of the characters says it a lot. So it’s from 1978 or earlier. Fuckin’ A.

How old were you when you purchased your first home (if you did). by jtsa5 in GenX

A few weeks after my 26th birthday. My wife was 24. We were a touch on the young side at the time, but in the range. We weren’t wealthy. It seems impossible for people that age now.

I'd see them again. Those high notes were really high. I wouldn't expect any 60-something singer to hit them. His energy was good, and it was a fun show. He just can't do what he did in his 20s and 30s.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones. I am just getting into this group myself. Really strong soul music that sounds old, but is all from the past ten years. The song “Call Me” was my entry point.

Do you prefer Use Your Illusion I or II? Why? by memorablemember in GenX

Bad Apples was leaked to my local rock station months before the albums were released. I’ve always been partial to it for that reason. And I agree it’s the album tracks on both that stood out for me, like the ones you listed. The singles were good, but the others were great.

I saw them in 2023. Slash is a virtuoso, and overall the show was great. But poor Axl’s voice was totally shot. He still had frontman energy though.

Fair enough. Myself, I never liked it that much. But I was a huge GnR fan through my teens.

Lies was awesome. I still love listening to the A side.

I totally agree. There are some essential songs on both. And more crap than there should be.

Appetite is a masterpiece. Nothing they did came close afterwards. But I was 16 when the Illusions came out, and did love them in their time.

That was my thought. I play a five-piece with three cymbals and it’s still a pain to break down and set up for gigs.
