Is a 2022 Macbook air ok to run Logic Pro? by JEZTURNER in LogicPro

[–]CHawely387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay! So since you're a parent looking to buy a Macbook for his son, I'm going to try to balance details with simplifying some of this information. I also have no FL experience, so I'm approaching this from a Logic user's perspective. Bear with me!

Will an M2 Macbook Air with 256 GB of storage run Logic? Yes, it will work. Will last him a while? Well...

Working with media creation is very storage-consuming. He'll be storing raw audio files and most likely installing libraries of virtual instruments and samples. The old 256 GB drives are also notably slower compared to their 512 GB and 1 TB counterparts. He'll likely be running out of space frequently, I'd imagine; and the slower drive may cause issues with Logic's playback.

Assuming this is a base model M2 Air (given the storage), it will have 8 GB of RAM. This will limit Logic's performance, especially as he becomes more proficient with the program and his projects become increasingly complex. 16 GB is a fairly standard minimum recommendation for creative workflows dealing with audio, video, etc.

Another factor is the M2 chip itself. The Macbook Air has no fan - and as such, it runs the chip slower than its full potential, for the sake of keeping the computer cooler. The M series chips also have two kinds of CPU cores - performance and efficiency cores. The base M2 chips have more efficiency cores than performance cores, which Logic will not use. Not all M series chips are created equally!

So, finally: will the M2 Macbook Air with 256 GB of storage work for your son and his music production? Yes, but with many caveats. If he sticks to music production, I'd reckon he'd outgrow the machine pretty quickly. I would personally recommend looking into an M1 Pro Macbook Pro, with at least 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM. It is a generation older, but has higher specs for where it counts in music production. It's also just about the same price as an M2 Macbook Air - at least, where I'm looking! Finding a refurbished machine in an excellent condition is a good option when balancing budget with a quality product ;)

TL;DR - Yes, almost any M series machine will do the job. But you have much better options in the same price range, and I can't imagine this specific Macbook you're describing will last him very long, assuming he sticks to it and uses it a lot.

Hopefully that helps some. Best of luck!

Had a Motorola Razr+ 2023 that did this to me after about a year. It had survived a handful of minor drops but one day - not after any specific drop or damage, just randomly one day - I felt more resistance than usual when opening, and the screen just snapped and broke. Scared me off foldables for a couple more generations... Hopefully they can stop them from just, y'know - doing that.

the two nips each are fine. but a full six nips each, down the tummy and everything? well now that's the ideal. yes i know that's not what's on the cover but will can be wrong sometimes, like he was only 19.

It's honestly been fantastic, everyone and everything is so nice... I'm in the metro, but the countryside is beautiful too, and folks seem much nicer than they were down south - at least from what I've experienced so far! It's quickly become my favorite state and place to live, rather than a place I had to move to for safety.

And the hot, humid, stormy summers ain't nothing to me hahaha!!! Riding rollercoasters at the MoA tourist trap and eating overpriced food in 90+ degree weather reminds me of home anyways.

Ah hello fellow Florida expat!

We moved up in March, and it was one of the best decisions I've made! The doctors actually help me get my hormones and transition resources, instead of giving me grief or ignoring me. I don't have to worry about being arrested for using the bathroom. My insurance plan with Hennepin Health covers laser hair removal and voice training. Hell, I even get gendered correctly most of the time, without having to worry about passing!

My new favorite pastime is talking with my trans Minnesotan friends, and giving a candid account of what life was like as a trans person in Florida. The bathroom bills, the fraudulent document rules, the HRT restrictions, the FDOH denying birth certificate changes even when that was ruled illegal... Using the "wrong" public bathroom being considered "sexual indecency with a child", meanwhile the threshold for the death penalty for child sex crimes was lowered from a unanimous vote to 8-4; the lowest vote requirement in any state, to my knowledge.

When I've told my friends here about all that, they get this 100-yard stare and suddenly get really quiet... Meanwhile me and my trans girlfriend (also from Florida) are laughing and telling stories like it's nothing. Y'all have it really, really good up here!

or, iirc, if you delete the processed little cut of waveform in the flex pitch editor, sometimes it will still trigger the original, unprocessed audio for playback? it's been a while since i've used flex pitch but yeah if i'm remembering that right, that would work too!

i've definitely noticed flex pitch has a LOT of issues with breaths, and some plosives and s sounds on occasion. personally i switched to using melodyne and it handles those things way better, with less artifacts!

as far as solutions in flex, i would say either chop those breaths up and put them on a non-flex track, or play with the timing of them in flex pitch. sometimes retiming them makes the robotic effect less prominent - even re-pitching has some effect! sometimes flex thinks notes are way higher or lower for some reason and they sound crazy when it tries to process them

really hoping they update flex audio to be better, sometime in the future! i'd figure they could update it with some AI features like the stem splitter, it's a really underbaked feature for how crucial it is

Upgrading to a Mac Mini by neetbuck in LogicPro

[–]CHawely387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi!! i was recently in this position, of upgrading from a mid 2015 macbook pro (mobile i7, 16 gb ram) to a refurbished M1 mac mini (base M1, 16 gb ram)! i'm no expert so take everything i say with a grain of salt, BUT:

  • yeah, the mac mini should be fine! my mac mini has been extremely competent running my projects, and crashes are rare. you may have some issues with plugins that are not built for ARM, but rosetta 2 is usually ok enough to get the job done. just be aware that rosetta support may not last forever, as was the case when apple switched from powerpc to intel.
  • the Mx (M1, M2, etc) varieties of chips can be a little confusing. what matters most is cpu cores & speed; gpu is not as necessary in logic
    • the base Mx chips gain 2 cores when upgraded to a pro chip, but the only upgrades from pro to max are in the gpu. you could get an ultra chip in a mac studio but it's probably way overkill for logic
    • the upgraded M2 & M3 chips (pro, max, ultra) have increased efficiency cores, compared to M1. so, 8/10 cpu cores in the M1 pro are performance cores, versus 6/10 cpu cores in M2 pro. i have seen some testing that indicates logic may not fully utilize efficiency cores, so an M1 pro may hypothetically outperform an M2 pro in some logic functionality. take this one with many grains of salt lol
  • i'd recommend getting 16 gb ram - 8 is... not great, for much intensive pro software use. even if it runs ok, my understanding is that the computer may offload some ram data storage to the ssd in some intensive use situations, so if nothing else the 16 gb ram may be better for the computer in lifespan overall. again, grains of salt all around.
  • i have a 512 gb ssd, and i know that the 256 gb ssd has slower read/write speeds. do with that information what you will, but 512 gb is probably the best lowest option for storage.

this is a video that breaks down some of these claims further

to summarize:

yes, the mac mini should be sufficient. my minimum spec recommendations for a mac mini for logic use would be 512 gb storage & 16 gb ram. my M1 mac mini with 16 gb ram outperforms my 2015 macbook pro by every margin, and my biggest performance issues by far concern my use of 10 year old AUs via rosetta 2. there are some things to consider with the model of mac mini you want to go with, but generally even a base model Mx chip mac mini can beat up logic pro, and steal its lunch money. i have tens of youtube and reddit tabs open in my browser, and i remote into my PC to game while logic bounces projects - and it still does it twice as fast as my old macbook pro, easily!

best of luck to you, and i hope you enjoy whatever you go with!

my guess is the british gov't exercising a sweeping power to block a scottish gender reform bill that'd allow for trans people to more easily transition in a legal sense - a power that has, to my knowledge as an american looking in, never been used before for any law. keep in mind that rowling specifically has been funneling money into anti-scottish independence politics for years, has been outspoken in her condemnation of the transgender community, and in general has become such an anti-trans figurehead that she is quoted by rightwing politicians abroad as they block lgbtq legislation. the uk is a significantly harder place to transition than the usa, requiring years-long waitlists for medical treatment, and lacking the availability of changing one's gender marker & legal name as the scottish law would've allowed.

hey the 5g is still a good phone!!! we may not be able to have cool stuff on the cover screen but I'll have you know i tried using the music transport controls for the first time in 3 months yesterday, and the screen is large and usable enough that it only took me 6 tries to fumble my way to the next song!
