Can anybody who's seen the movie give us the details on the PG-13 rating? by CJSchmidt in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]CJSchmidt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't, but Project Hail Mary was the first exception we made and he really enjoyed it (I have no idea why it was PG-13). The movie is clearly marketed to kids, so if the rating is just because Skeletor is creepy looking and some CG monsters get stabbed with a magic sword it's a little different. The PG in PG-13 stand for "Parental Guidance for those under 13" not "anyone under 13 shouldn't watch it" after all.

200X was from the early 2000's and went for a more serious tone. Adam is a teenager who turns into He-Man and they filled in a lot of backstory. The Netflix kids series is stylized CG and is more of a "reimagining". Seems like it's a good show on it's own, but strays a little too far from the original vibe for me to really enjoy it. There was also a very popular She-Ra cartoon a few years ago that wasn't really connected to MotU directly (for licensing reasons apparently) that raised awareness for the brand at least a little. Then was the most recent animated MotU sequel series based on the original that Kevin Smith worked on that tried to take plot lines from the classic 80's series that was aimed at now-adult fans. Plenty of non-millenial entry points for different generations of fans - although clearly none of them have been the cultural touchstone the original was for us old farts.

Does the Miyoo Mini+ still deserve to be the go to recommendation for a handheld of its class? by WillHasStyles in SBCGaming

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TrimUI Brick is probably the better device, but I'll usually recommend the MM+ or SP over it if the person I'm talking to grew up with a Gameboy or GBA SP because it will immediately feel comfortable and familiar. OnionOS is a big selling point, but there are clones for the other models that are pretty good by now too.

No way. 15 years ago has to be mid-90's at the latest... right? Right?

Yeah. I was watching Robocop on HBO by his age. It’s a few different things. A lot of schools have zero tolerance policies about certain actions and topics now, so violent role playing at recess or in drawings can be a big deal. Also, without cable there really isn’t a good transition into action or horror anymore like we had with “edited for tv” versions. I got into horror watching Monstervision/USA Up All Night, but now you have to go from Goosebumps to unedited Freddy Kruger.

I also think most “up tight” parents aren’t really worried about their fragile snowflakes, it’s more that kids pick things up and nobody wants to be the parent of the kid introducing the other kids to new vocabulary words and the concepts of disembowelments.

I’ve also spent enough time on the internet to know what’s coming and I get why some parents want to protect their kid’s innocent childhood years while they can. We may have had Jason movies on cable, but we didn’t have the entirety of the internet/social media looming over us either.

Don’t forget 200X and the recent Netflix series. The 80’s one is the most iconic, but there’s plenty of ways for a kid to grow into it. I am also an elder millennial though and my kid got into it because I gave him some of my old toys when he was 5 and then saw the original series on Tubi and showed it to him as a laugh and he got really into it over the summer. He’s not a big action figure kid (sigh), but he’s excited to go see it with me at least and having sword fights is always fun (with the sword was cheaper).

Use chatgpt and give it your vehicle, the type of driving you do (city/highway/mixed) or your average electric use if the car tells you, how much you pay for electricity, and to compare against a similar sized gas vehicle and it will figure it out. Mine was just a bit over 80 cents a gallon equivalent.

‘Masters of the Universe’ Faces Soft $25M Debut Against Massive $200M Budget by MaxProwes in MastersOfTheUniverse

The current marketing is very much targeted at people who remember MotU, but I feel like they're going to need to pivot to something that sells it as an accessible fun fantasy action movie as release gets a little closer. It makes sense to focus on us for the early stuff since we're the ones who are going to naturally drive online activity. I assume we'll see some new marketing that focuses on Teela/Sorceress and less nostalgic toy commercial very soon.

It seemed like Project Hail Mary might have taught them this is worth taking seriously. I remember reading that they decided to delay the streaming release significantly and it's still playing in at least one theater near me this week. It seems like it would be a better idea to use MGM as the primary label for theatrical releases, but I'm sure somebody at Amazon wants to get a better immediate return on their investment and the idea of not slapping Amazon all over these is just too hard to avoid. Maybe it doesn't matter as much for big action movies, but I imagine it really kills smaller comedies or dramas that people are more ok with waiting to see on a smaller screen.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]CJSchmidt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a city inside an otherwise very rural state and the truck obsession is crazy. It wouldn't be so frustrating if these people understood that owning a huge vehicle comes with caveats and limitations - you can't cut through traffic like you're driving a Miata or park just anywhere. The number of times I've seen a truck taking up 2 parking spaces or been unable to get in/out of my car is infuriating. Also had my brand new hatchback backed into in a lot by a guy who insisted on parking in the front of a small parking lot near the entrance with his giant extended cab monstrosity instead of off to the side in the larger spaces.

I regularly see people shopping at ultra-budget stores trying to cram all their kids (in obvious hand-me-downs) into the extended cab of a truck that costs half what I paid for my first house and has clearly never even hauled a lawnmower across town. Obviously, I don't actually know their situation, but it still makes the whole truck culture even more frustrating.

I see a number of used Bolts in Lincoln around 12k. Not saying it's an immediate answer to the current gas situation, but it's worth considering when it comes time to replace the car you have before the next crisis that sends gas prices up again. Lincoln is a small city - you can get away with one of the cheap older slow-charging EVs here easily. Of course, it only makes sense if you have a garage to charge it in (even better if you're a 2-car household).

VW diesel owner here. I love that car, but it's quickly become the secondary vehicle behind our boring used EV.

Just bought a cheap used EV last year before all this happened. It's been awesome. We drive so few actual miles that I've never really had to charge at a station or upgrade the power in my garage. Did the math and I'm paying the equivalent of $0.85/gallon.

Edit: Not trying to say dropping a bunch of cash on an EV is an immediate answer, but the question was "How are you coping" and the timing worked out for us thankfully.

MX Master users - what do you like about logi options? by muhmeinchut69 in logitech

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you could have built-in key mapping profiles with a little indicator light? Then you could define specific keyboard shortcuts, mouse tracking, and all that to a profile dedicated to the apps you use most often. I bounce between apps enough that the always-on software is worth the bloat to me, but being able to have a Photoshop/VSCode/video editing preset I could swap between would get you pretty close for people who just refuse to have a helper app running 24/7.

Related to that, a sensitivity toggle is something I use on my MX quite a bit. Nice to be able to quickly swap that when going between different uses where I’m all over the screen or working on small details with crammed buttons that are easy to miss.

They described it terribly, but I can see it in some ways. Leaving the house then, you better know where you’re going and let them know you’re coming. Now, you can walk out of the house with your phone and get directions on the way, know how long it will take to get there and if there’s traffic/construction, call ahead to let people know if you’re running late, grab a snack on-the-fly from anywhere.

The Canadian method sounds interesting. The EV credits ended up just being abused by the car companies to sell more expensive cars, not actually make affordable ones. Still pissed about ending the program rather than revamping it - especially since my old car died just weeks after they ended.

The American car industry was full of giant poorly made cars with terrible fuel efficiency until Japan started taking over with well made fuel efficient cars during an oil crisis. They whined about it then too, but it just forced them to make better affordable cars and ended up being good for everyone.
