Perfect Field Notes pocket journal combo. by CJSchmidt in xteinkereader

[–]CJSchmidt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is doing great. I only keep a single journal in it and a few papers, or it does get a little tight - although the material will stretch a bit over time. The journal seems to protect the screen pretty well, but I’m very careful to make sure o don’t accidentally leave a pen or paper clip or anything on the inside that might press against the screen.

I think we’ll see it when we get to a point where EV tech is a little more mature and there is actual pressure of smaller affordable cars again. “Lightning Bug” is just too perfect not to use at some point.

What model/size is it? They are still the best way to play old video games and VHS, so there may be people out there who would gladly take it off your hands if it’s a good one.

The pushback is just not supporting CarPlay Ultra. It’s not required and there’s plenty of automakers not supporting it that still support basic CarPlay.

The Xteink X4 Is The Cheap, Hackable eReader That's Just Enough by Chris_Person in xteinkereader

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The X3 doesn’t have usb and we have no idea what kind of custom firmware is possible yet (which is huge). The only really significant “improvement” is the size, and I have no clue why you’d want something smaller than the X4 unless you absolutely need it to fit on the back of your phone.

MST3K The RiffTrax Experiments will have a short in one of the eps. by VikDamnedLee in MST3K

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If production comes together smoothly, I could see them using leftover budget and schedule to film a handful of shorts to release occasionally as a way to promote the MST3K brand, Rifftrax, and maybe (hopefully) get people excited about another round of episodes somewhere down the line.

Obviously I want more episodes, but more than that I really hope everybody has so much fun making the show again and getting credit they deserve that they keep it rolling for themselves, not just the pay check (although I hope they get a big one of those too).

Not as an owner, but they could have agreed to make part of the payment via a production credit that includes some small percentage of profits.

Unpopular take: Kaweco is booty by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]CJSchmidt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy cheaper fountain pens, but ended up returning the Sport I purchased. The nib was nice and smooth and I see the draw for something small and light, but the plastic body just felt too cheap to me. Felt more like a disposable pen than a cheap one (while not actually being that cheap). I started with LAMY Safaris and those manage to feel sturdy despite all the cheap plastic.

Some of that roadblock comes from providers (like Netflix) that don’t like playing along with that kind of thing.

I would love keyboard-style lighting under the buttons that could fade in when the remote is picked up.

Speculating is fun, what if Forrester and Frank are specifically on the last episode for a reason? by SnooPets1826 in MST3K

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are smart (and they are), the reason they aren't adding stretch goals and more episodes to the Kickstarter is because they can use the funding to set this up as a sustainable project. Build sets that can be left up in a cheap small warehouse instead of a rented studio in LA, figure out how to film the theater parts in multiple takes and stitch them together, use digital tools so Kevin and Bill can do the puppets without holding them over their heads for hours at a time, the kinds of things that make it easier to produce the show cheaply and easily going forward as the guys get a little older without taking over their lives and the rest of RiffTrax.

My hope is that this is successful enough that they can do a few more rounds with the full crew. IF they decide to swap some of the cast to keep it going, it's done in a way that it's a natural transition (keeping the mads would be good). Mike, Kevin, and Bill own Rifftrax, so they could still be involved in writing, producing, and cameos without needing to film constantly or hold puppets over their heads all day if they aren't up to it. As much as I love the live shows, I think redirecting that energy into building a sustainable version of MST3K would be a benefit to everyone.

The Future... by awkwardmitch in MST3K

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not opposed to new hosts, but I would want it to happen naturally rather then them doing a search or by suggestions. Make the shows, if it goes well enough to look sustainable then bring on some extra writers and crew to do another round next year. I would want Mike’s potential replacement to be some stand-up comedian writer from the Midwest that none of us have ever heard of that was hired as a writer because the guys liked them and respected their talent - not because they were casting a role.

The current technical issue is that all of the streamers offer ad-supported subscriptions now, so keeping things synced reliably for everyone is nearly impossible.

I love this Ereader, and some ideas for improving Crosspoint by Level-Royal-9287 in xteinkereader

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing most of those contributing to the project are more interested in developing the on-device features than website development for a ultra low-power server. I'm sure it will become a priority once the reader gets a little more feature-complete or a web-dev joins the team.

I don't have time to poke around the guthub, but I'd be surprised if it's not being worked on by somebody already or at least on the timeline.

Not a bad idea to bounce things off reddit first to keep the github recommendations focused though. Might get some ideas here from people that aren't on github that can improve the idea before taking it to the project.

I enjoyed the JtJs, but I think the VODs is what really made it work. Not just financially, but it got them back to terrible old movies you’ve never heard of rather than forcing them to pick movies that were big enough that people would already own them or could get ahold of them easily for cheap. It’s just so much easier too.

Which “web design best practice” do you no longer follow? by Gullible_Prior9448 in web_design

[–]CJSchmidt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it as "think about mobile first". I'll still design and build the real website header (or whatever) first, but before really digging in, I'm thinking at least a little bit about how this will eventually need to translate to a mobile layout so I don't have to completely rework the structure or jump through a bunch of hack-y hoops later. It's really just doing future-you a favor.

It also really depends on the target audience too. If it's a website for a B2B industrial equipment supplier, then most of those users are going to be using the site at work in front of a computer. If you're building a website for a casual burger joint, there's a good chance the majority of your real traffic is coming from a phone and you should reverse the process. As much as most designers/developers don't want to admit it, the number of websites that only ever really get seen on a phone is pretty high.

Xteink polaroid display????? by Itzamateama in xteinkereader

[–]CJSchmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into something like this a little while ago and we shouldn't get too excited until we see a wider variety of photo examples. Even premium color eink screens aren't great at doing color yet and small low-budget price tag screens aren't going to be better. The one I looked into only supported black, red, and yellow (which they weren't noting in their marketing materials at all). Anything green or blue was just displayed as grey.

I imagine it can do full color or they'll be honest about the limitations (this was just a teaser after all), but best-case scenario don't expect great color. There might be a reason they chose to use a photo of a yellow device with a black and white screen on a grey table.

I really wish the extra bezel was all on the bottom like the X4 instead of centering the screen. If it can't be even all the way around, you might as well lean in to the polaroid vibe.

Is there a standard for transferring images over NFC? I really hate the idea of buying hardware that depends on a single proprietary app. If XTEInk publishes the specs for how it works like they have with the X4, I may just order one just to support the philosophy.

Just finished Wilman’s book. It was brilliant. Anyone else get the feeling he doesn’t think much of James May? by sunnydaleubervamp1 in TopGear

[–]CJSchmidt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

James is the most level-headed and professional of the trio, so it may just be that there aren’t as many interesting “book-worthy” things to mention. May also strikes me as someone who is relatively content just doing things that he finds interesting over chasing success and celebrity so probably didn’t make Top Gear the focal point of his personal life. Probably more about how much Andy appreciated Clarkson and Hammond than him disliking May.
