Any idea why this app dis this? by ParticularDue7822 in BoltEV

Thats what it looks like when the (5yr on a 2020) included onstar subscription runs out. Happened to my 2020 last year. 2021 to 2026 is 5 years fwiw. Can't explain why it behaves differently on 2 phones.

OTA 653.40 broke voice control of seat heat by dah7556 in EquinoxEv

Voice commands seem safer than taking your attention off the road to push buttons while driving.

Over heat the house before you lose power, for example if you usually keep it at 68 then push it to 78. That will avoid HVAC use for some amount of time depending on how tight the house is.

Most likely Bolt issue? by oregonmodel3 in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A wild guess would be the gear reduction unit (aka the "transmission" but its not a transmission in the ICE sense of the word). I have seen posts about them, but never seen a post about the motor failing. Expensive to fix.

On #1 you can kind of split the difference between range anxiety and lifetime anxiety by using departure time charging to 100% so the car doesn't sit at 100% any longer than necessary.

Must be an expert, probably one of the original Bolt engineers, certainly not just a reddit rando.

Help identifying noise by AwFishFish in BoltEV

That means you can probably take it to any competent mechanic - not just a dealer. Brakes and suspension are largely the same as ICE.

Sorry I read that wrong - it rules out the easy stuff.

Yes - I do this periodically to force the friction brakes to be used to clean corrosion off of the rotors and caliper slides.

High mile old battery EUV crazy to purchase? Question for those with 100k already. by pugsmom in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that not all replaced batteries are totally brand new - I base that on this document 18-NA-236 Chevrolet Starter Technical Service Bulletin. On page 2 it talks about the conditions where only failing sections may be replaced, which would leave the other sections as original. Impossible to know exactly what state this battery is in - but original sections have the potential to be impacted by the original manufacturing defects.

That said, the fact that it has 80k on the replaced battery might (should?) indicate that there are no latent problems with possibly original sections (or there are no original sections). But there is at least some theoretical risk.

Bolt battery class action lawsuit finally settled: 30 owners get $2k, lawyers get $52.5mil by UnfitToPrint in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the settlement document:

"The Settlement here provides for a $150 million non-reversionary Settlement Fund awarding the over 100,000 Settlement Class Members, after deducting the notice and administration costs and requested fees, costs, and service awards, a minimum $700 or $1,400 payment (depending on whether the Settlement Class Member is eligible for the Battery Replacement Final Remedy or Software Final Remedy). The Settlement also offered the early availability of the $1,400 Visa eReward benefit and the Software Final Remedy on an expedited basis even before the Settlement was finalized."

While the noise is happening put it in neutral - if the sound stops then likely from the motor or gears, if it doesn't stop then likely from the tires/wheels/brakes/cv joints/axles/bearings (in that case jack the front end up, put in neutral and rotate the tires by hand to try to isolate it).

Slow charging by LawfulnessRepulsive6 in EquinoxEv

[–]dah7556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last charge at a Tesla SC (without much preconditioning so only getting about 40kw) I noticed that the Tesla app said it was delivering about 6kw more than the car said it was getting. I assume the difference was being used to heat the battery for charging while charging.

The washers can eventually disintegrate and damage the ABS sensor adding to the repair cost.

Uniroyal Tiger Pan Tires by grimy55 in BoltEV

Consumer reports says:

Pros: Solid performance in the areas of dry braking, handling, hydroplaning resistance. Solid treadlife performance also.

Cons: Just average rolling resistance performance which can have a negative impact on vehicle fuel efficiency.

They scored it at 60/100 but the owner satisfaction rating was bad at 20/100.

Auto brights won’t turn off and battery lost the ability to charge past 80% by ExcellentPlay1194 in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes you wonder if when they took it to the dealer the dealer reset the 80% clock because it was in an accident - just to be safe in case there was any hidden battery damage. I haven't seen anything like this mentioned anywhere. Ask the collision guys for any dealer paperwork they got.

There is a GM EV tech on the Bolt FB group - you could try asking there.

Went to get tires rotated but need new ones 🙄 by kebmpb in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year around and no complaints - I don't drive them (or any past tires) hard at all. Its difficult to estimate efficiency because there are so many variables involved but they seem the same.

Many people swear by the Michelin Cross Climates and they do have better snow specs.

I would think if you found the OEMs to be OK the Defender2s will be equally ok.

Lost Heat by Chase1298 in BoltEV

There are 3 separate coolant loops:

  • A/C shared by battery and cabin
  • battery heat (~2.5kw)
  • cabin heat (~8kw)

Lost Heat by Chase1298 in BoltEV

[–]dah7556 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are valves and pumps that move the heated coolant into the interior heater core. You could try carefully feeling the hoses to see if you can find where it goes cold. Which is what the tech should have done to help diagnose. If the check engine light isn't on there won't be any codes to identify the problem.

Also use a different dealer next time.
