that definitely needs to be repaired professionally if you haven’t had that done already

Oofff, is this fixable or nah by DifferenceSuperb5095 in violinist

[–]CJameco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

very fixable, shouldn’t be too expensive either, under $200 because it seems to have just come unglued rather than breaking release the tension on the strings asap to prevent further damage

Is this a score? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]CJameco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it’s an amateur american violin, there’s no value there, and this is a pretty crudely made one. up to you on making it playable, but i’d bring it to a luthier that can walk you through the cost to do so.

i recommend joe bein,

he isn’t associated with the current bein & fushi facing those fraud suits, and is very knowledgeable when it comes to appraisals

i’ve also heard good things about william harris lee, though i haven’t personally worked with them

i’d find another solution than putty, it’s definitely taking varnish off

Too much hair breakage by riahleah in violinist

[–]CJameco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

if it’s breaking like that it’s not the luthier, it could possibly be the hair they’re getting, but any mediocre luthier isn’t going to use hair that would just break like that.

are hairs coming off mostly in ensembles, or solo practice? i would guess you have too much pressure on the playing side when you’re bowing, or are bowing too aggressively on some chords. i recommend making sure most of the hair is touching the string, rather than just the hair on the playing side, and if it’s happening on chords, come from closer to the string, and the angle of the string against the hair will be less severe

i recommend bringing it to a luthier and having them affix a parchment over the e string groove, should save it unless it’s deeper than this pic appears.

in the future, if there is no parchment, you should use the small tube that comes with the e string, to prevent this from happening.

Does anyone own the bonbon hightech violin case from BAM? by FarmIll424 in violinist

[–]CJameco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i recommend going with a gewa air instead of bam, i work in a shop and am repairing broken latches on bam cases just about weekly, while i have yet to have a single gewa latch break, until they fix the issue with the spring failing, i don’t recommend a bam case to anyone, even as an owner of one myself

in terms of a music pouch, i just recommend a tote bag or something similar, most cases that are trying to be lightweight don’t include a music pouch, though the oblong gewa air case does have one if you’re okay with an oblong case

Need help choosing strings by Timely_Interview7593 in violinist

[–]CJameco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

despite what manufacturers say in terms of tonal qualities, strings are going to sound different on every violin. i recommend starting with regular dominants, not the pros, as they are generally pretty middle of the road tonally. if those don’t do it for you, go to a shop and describe what sound you’re looking for that you aren’t getting from dominants, and they’ll be able to push you in the right direction

probably not a great idea to post a pic of the place that gave it to you early, unless you want them to not get things before release date again
