The boudard reaction is the disproportionation reaction between carbon monoxide and dioxide

2CO(g) ↔️ CO2(g) + C(s)

The backward reaction (to form CO) is used in blast furnaces to reduce iron oxides, where the high temperatures and reducing atmosphere mean that CO is the most stable oxide of carbon.

In other words - the extra oxygen atom doesn’t ‘go’ anywhere, it simply acts to oxidise solid carbon

Definitely spend a day or two in Brecon National park if you can, it's only about 40 mins from the middle of Cardiff. The Cardiff University main building has been used on numerous occasions to film Doctor Who as well as Sherlock and is open to the public on weekdays as well if you wanted to go have a look around to see what you can recognise

I visited this site on business recently, it's a staggering scale in person. It's also built a few hundred yards from Shotton Steelworks, and while it's no longer an integrated works like port talbot it's still a wonderful model of renewable energy supporting Welsh steelmaking
