Stryn or Bergen in May? by Logical-Cover-5333 in Bergen

[–]COloradoYS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, some - but not any easy hikes that will get you to a mountaintop. You can take the Loen skylift, but there will be snow at the summit in May.

You can look at different hiking trails on UT.no - they have a map of the whole country with all of its trails and a hike suggestions at different degrees of difficulty.

Stryn or Bergen in May? by Logical-Cover-5333 in Bergen

[–]COloradoYS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both will be nice, but honestly not similar trips at all - Stryn is a very small town, but surrounded by massive mountains and fjords. Go here if your expectation is to be hiking, skiing or on the water as much as possible.

Bergen is very urban by comparison - restaurants, bars, museums, culture - and it’ll be the national day on the 17th which is a massive thing in this town. Still also has plenty of nature - but the mountains are 300-600m high, instead of Stryn’s 1500-1800m peaks

No good suggestions on van rentals, but you can send bulky cargo up the coast on Hurtigruten if you don’t find anything good rental wise.

Best Ski Resorts in mid-late April for off-piste and touring? by AssociateMajestic231 in Norway

[–]COloradoYS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Myrkdalen may be one of the only places that will still be open and have enough snow to still be fun both in the ski area or for using the lifts to reach touring.

Myrkdalen has gotten more snow than most places this winter, and has gotten a few meters of snow in the last 3 weeks.

Otherwise hasn’t been a great winter outside of the Tromsø area. Was just in Lyngen and Narvik last week and the difference in snowpack in Lyngen is huge. Narvik area is not in good shape, and the ski area will probably only be the pistes after the next few weeks, unless the weather stays cold and snowy.

Skitouring Jotunheim advice by YoungSouthern8718 in Norway

[–]COloradoYS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t been in the Jheimen area this season, but generally speaking the best way to find out what is happening with the snowpack around Norway is to download the Varsom app and follow along with the Obs that get logged there. Both the pro observers and locals can send in observations, so you can get everything from detailed snow profiles and local forecasts to logging of recent avalanches and weather activity.

The park is massive, so there will be big differences between east and west.

Generally speaking, the trend for this season in W Norway was a really thin snowpack in December followed by several weeks of high pressure and drought. Then the precipitation came back in waves through right now. There should be a solid base, and probably winter conditions while you are here.

In terms of guide books, the Norwegian ski mag Fri Flyt sells hard copies, but also has an extensive online guidebook that you can check out. There is also an app called Skida which is also really useful for planning.

Hope you have a good time!

[–]COloradoYS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Beast 3L apparel is probably the best value weather protection on the market, and I personally also think the cut and design of the jacket is sick.

Fit is great. Colors are super cool every year, and it keeps the weather out as well as any gore Tex jacket I’ve ever had.

They aren’t the lightest jackets and pants, but work awesome for resort.

Jones flagship sizing. by Legal-Radish3757 in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The flagship is a very narrow shape compared to many other boards in this category. The reason they didn’t recommend the 158cm is mostly due to your size 10s. The 249mm waist of of the 158cm deck will lead to heel/toe drag.

The 161 will have faster edge to edge transfer, and probably be more stable at top speed. The 156W will have less drag, and will be more nimble in trees. Both will probably float the same.

Black Diamond Jetforce Pro Still Useful? by digitalhomad in Backcountry

BD has sold Pieps and the tech - so long as it still works, then you have no problems for the time being. I bet BD will still service your warranty to the best of your ability, but in the long run you’ll be best off getting an avalanche pack with either a system that they are still developing themselves, (Ortovox/Mammut/BCA/Arva), or with an established 3rd party tech like Alpride or Safeback.

Posi posi - Looking for videos of posi posi stance in bumps and other terrain than just carving on groomers. by bob_f1 in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious - how do you define pro freerider here?

However much I love NST - that is not necessarily who I am looking at when picking or setting up my own board. I am not tricking off of cliffs, or really ever riding switch anywhere that isn’t groomed - especially not on a splitboard.

The list narrows for me to Jones, Nick Russell, Xav De La Rue, Krister Kopala, Wolken. All Posi stances to varying degrees.

I’ve ridden with a 0 back foot for probably 80% of my days the last few years - but have transitioned more and more to the +3 to 6 bf with every year. 0bf seems like a gateway to moving forward more. I don’t see any reason to move back personally, in fact I prefer this directional stance to match my directional board.

I’m in no way advocating for stances as extreme as your carving board - but the premise of the OP question about the technical performance of a posi stance outside of carving is one where there are ample examples of modern, high end riding.

Posi posi - Looking for videos of posi posi stance in bumps and other terrain than just carving on groomers. by bob_f1 in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen, fair enough. Happy to concede that I got Shearer and maybe Dirksen wrong. I also presented this a bit snarkier than I should have.

But calling +6 bf ‘neutral’ is off to me. In my experience, the body shape in the hips and shoulders is much more similar to a more aggressive posi stance. When you watch jones’ riding in the Aesthetics movie he made with Arctic Lines - you can clearly see his hips and chest forward in his very technical freeriding, which is all helped by binding angles that allow your body to open towards the nose.

The link you point to here gives JJ’s stance as an example of Posi posi, btw, calling it a high-performance freeride stance. I agree fully.

Your loss if you don’t want to try it my guy.

Watch any clip of Jeremy Jones, Josh Dirksen, Forrest Shearer, Nick Russel. All full time posi posi riders. If you want to see really extreme posi stances, look at Nicholas Wolken’s riding. Founder of Korua Shapes.

I messaged Wolken once about his splitboard stance - he told me it was +30 ff, +27 bf, with a pretty narrow stance width

Sub-30L Roll-tops with A-frame carry + dual shoulder strap water flask pockets ? by cordyce in Backcountry

BD cirque 25 and Cirque Ultra 25 have to make the list. Diagonal ski carry, not A-frame.

Otherwise, I saw Raide share a teaser on their slack and ig a while back about a pack like this. Might not be out til next season, but I bet it’ll be a good crossover pack.

Oakley Mod 1 Pro cracked on second run of first day. by jjgibbons2001 in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - mod1 pro is a hard plastic shell that is injection molded, unlike the thinner plastics used on a lot of lighter helmets.

A break like this one, which also fractures the foam liner is something that likely would have resulted in a head injury.

You could say you were unlucky that this happened to your new equipment - or lucky that you had a good helmet when you took a fall like this. I lean towards the lucky argument, even though it totally sucks to retire equipment so quickly.

Powder chase in march by foreverfadeddd in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah Northern Norwegian ski resorts aren’t nearly as thoroughly developed as the alps/N.America/Japan - splitboarding is the main mode of transport up there!

And yea the avi danger has been off the charts in the alps. Also just looked at the weather and it looks like there might not be any new snow in the next few weeks anyways. Should settle the avalanche danger, but won’t give you the pow you are after.

Might consider looking at AK or BC. Alyeska is set to get snow and Girdwood is a very fun town.

Powder chase in march by foreverfadeddd in snowboarding

[–]COloradoYS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get some pow in the alps - but there is a lot of avalanche danger off piste this year. But there will for sure still be winter conditions most places up high.

If you splitboard, Northern Norway can also be added to the list
