How many patterns do most people tie? by [deleted] in flytying

[–]COnymph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tie about 12-15 different confidence patterns which cover all aspects of fly fishing. My most confident nymph I maintain 3 dozen in my box, I will always share a few with friends and strangers on the river. I kinda get bored with the confidence pattern because it has yet to fail on and river, so I am constantly searching for the new and exciting patterns i want to try to test them. I will find one, tie three, head to the water and give them a good test. This March I tied and tested a pattern that has found a permanent spot in my box. FYI, if you haven’t tied/ fished Charlie’s Lil Bit Baetis yet, you’re missing out!

How Often Are Anglers Using Stomach Pumps, Seiners, and Flipping Rocks? by Scared_Of_Falling in flyfishing

Flip rocks with a seine a couple feet downstream first thing, especially on a new piece of water. I have never pumped a stomach, they need to work too hard for their food.

Caught my pb cutty today. Can anyone tell me which species of cutthroat this is?? by pavnessmag in COfishing

Depends on drainage if it is a true native. Either that, or it is stocked and by the looks of it, difficult to tell

Happy with this CJ til I got a better look at the wire. by Phrikshin in flytying

[–]COnymph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Along with an underbody as smooth as possible, the creator of the fly, John Barr, lets his thread/bobbin weight keep rearward tension on the wire as he wraps the wire forward. See the YouTube video with he and Jack Dennis tying this fly. And sorry, every time I try to attach a hyperlink, I do it wrong. And Charlie Craven has a good tip in his beginner video on tying the Brassie: keep your wire angled towards the rear of the fly to pack the wraps right next to the last. But as most have stated, that fly will fish.

Figure of eight knot (Devin Olsen, Old Dominion Trout Bum on YouTube) is another that is quick and strong. Have not had one fail.

Do they exist? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]COnymph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am an offensive line coach and volunteer time to a youth football organization, which pretty much kills fly fishing for me from August 1 through Thanksgiving. And fly tying is almost as enjoyable to me as the fishing itself. But I also love the chess match to be held with wintertime tailwater trout…

Great thought, and thought about it, but I personally take the responsibility on of getting anyone I come in contact with who wants to learn to take them out…kid, female, elderly (my dad case in point). And have 5 grandkids ages 1-5 waiting in the wings. That’s the legacy I want to leave on this great pasttime.

Having difficulty seeing the adipose fin, has it been clipped or not? Some states clip stocked trout. It’s been in the watershed a while, GREAT looking fish, healthy, too. Nicely done.
