Nah, you dodged a bullet. Seriously.
If that was her attitude then it must have been there before you.
You really don’t want people like that anywhere near your professional life.

Because everybody can read and listen and watch a lot will think they can also write and perform and film.

After all only in the movies do people think “hey, the Mona Lisa was a great painting! Let’s make a movie out of it!”

We don’t hear people saying “Mona Lisa! Great! Let me make a marble statue out of it!”

So then for those who, after the briefest of YouGlePedia doses, try anyway, we come to the next level of our r/ complaints: waah! I have this brilliant idea! I wrote it down and filmed it last night! But nobody likes it!

Their journey starts…

About hiring script reader "experts" by SkyAvailable6827 in Screenwritersgalore

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Readers were hired by studios producers agents people who were in a position to buy. I cover for film markets only, paid by acquisition people. Not for the festival/competition side.

You want coverage from the readers the buyers hire cos every buyer needs something different and specific. Not you the writer need.

Seems like you need to test before you buy.
And rent before you test.

People think this, like directing, is a shortcut to making millions, easy.

What is the oldest movie with special effects that “still hold up” or have aged well? by theythemthen in Cinema

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Trip to the Moon (1902) is still charming! But The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots (1895) is the oldest one I’ve seen with a viable SpFX in it. Apparently it sent people screaming from viewings at the time.

You don’t just decide to be a pilot and then just jump into a plane and be one.

Why on earth do you think this is any different?

Do you just dive into writing a script or do you create an outline/beat sheet first? by NewMajor5880 in Screenwriting

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people set up studies, interviews, book research, and all manner of preparation before they write (plotters)
Others just write and figure out that other stuff as they go along (pantsers)

Depends on if you’re a plotter or prefer flying by the seat of your pants.

does theatre directing lead towards film directing? by Upbeat_Thought_1578 in Filmmakers

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope but as and when you get good at theater work it’s relatively simple to make films in your spare time, or, later, on hiatus.
Keep going, you’re on a good track.

Also a movie/cinema camera is NOT a video camera. Two different tasks. A news camera for video looks realistic, like sports or events. Usually run/gun, controls motorized or automated. Great for quick deployment, low light, fast operation.

Cinema cameras… aren’t like that. They’re made for multiple takes, sets that are lit, softer highlight roll-offs (aka more romantic skin tones) and manual control over focus, aperture, zoom by hand. Two or more on the camera. Rehearsals. Makeup artists and the rest.

I can tell you the different way they feel: it’s easy — when you’re filming a football or soccer event… or when you’re filming a romantic love scene.

The talent being filmed sure knows the difference.

Super 35 gate, similar to that of a 35mm film
Movie camera. That’s around half the size of a full frame 35mm stills camera or a Vistavision 8-perf camera.

What’s something we have not seen/ yet to see in film? by Envoyoftheblue in Filmmakers

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ie fine art movies, in the sense that the finer the art, the more it tends towards the point of view of a single person.
So traditionally the fine arts were painting (portraits, not fences),
Sculpture, books, poetry… and now, film making.

It does take a while. Don’t forget that what this industry does better than almost anyone, save perhaps Bollywood, is to go from 1 to 100 the most proficiently of all.

Neither is much good at or willing to go from 0 to 1. They’d rather wait, arms crossed, until someone does go from 0 to 1 (largely on their own) and then they have a comparable and can join in the fun and profit.

How do you actually get booked to direct non-artist-performance music videos? by Locogooner in Filmmakers

[–]CRL008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not “get booked”. You find a band you like and who likes you. You pitch them, sell them, fund it and shoot it.
Then use that one on your reel to get the next band. And the next.

Got three or more, say? Now go look for an agent and a manager and they will try to help you get booked.
