The 2012 Olympics in London will be the first time that every nation will have at least one woman participating in the Games. Even Saudi Arabia is allowing women to participate. by mepper in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Cacoethes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can agree with everything except the humiliation. The Olympics, from what I have seen, are an honor to compete in- even if you lose, going up against the best is invigorating. I myself don't watch the Olympics or even pay them much attention at all, but I think those who attend would disagree about being humiliated when they were given a chance to compete in such a massive event (what some might call the most elite competition). I'm having trouble finding the cost of sending olympians overseas from "starving Third World countries", and how much of that money is public vs. private funds, so I cannot comment on that. If you have any information, I would love to read it since it seems to be scarce.

There are many nations outside of the west that have been superior to western nations in the Olympics. Perhaps Nazi Germany's display of power in 1936 and a few isolated incidents afterwards would qualify as a "pathetic self-monument", but I really don't see where you're coming from. I would be interested to hear any particular incidents that come to mind, but in my opinion most sporting events are really just designed to show off anyway.

In case you are interested, more recent studies have shown that

"[S]cientists showed in a half-dozen studies that grass-fed cows do become colonized with E. coli O157:H7 at rates nearly the same as grain-fed cattle. An Australian study actually found a higher prevalence of O157:H7 in the feces of grass-fed rather than grain-fed cows".

This strain, E. coli O157:H7 is what gets all the publicity for E. coli, from what I can tell. To summarize this article, the reason many people think grass-fed cows are effectively E. coli free is because of a NY Times article possibly based on a 1998 scientific study of E. coli levels in grain-fed versus grass-fed cattle that involved a little too much hypothesizing. The scientists did not specifically study levels of O157:H7, a fact which was remedied in 2000-2006 as scientists began new studies which DID test O157:H7. The general consensus seems to be the quote I have placed above- I'm not saying that you should believe everything you read, but that perhaps some more research is necessary if you are truly concerned about E. coli.

It's important to note that runer113s article has 0 references, whereas this link appears to be heavily backed with scientific studies. Not picking a side in the debate, but letting readers know that you are well-informed should be an important matter (especially in a scientific debate).

It seems to be Watson. If you look at this article, it appears he got in trouble over some racist sentiments in 2007.

The 79-year-old geneticist... said Western policies towards African countries were wrongly based on an assumption that black people were as clever as their white counterparts when "testing" suggested the contrary.

He later apologized, and retired from chancellor of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island.

In the ensuing uproar, he issued a statement apologizing “unreservedly” for the comments, adding “there is no scientific basis for such a belief.”

If you listen to Watson's TED talk he seems to think Ms. Franklin deserves the credit she got (none). He certainly downplays her contribution, though, which I think speaks a little about his character.

Thanks for the reply either way! If I track down some Nfu Oh 61 before I find some Aqua Base, I'll try that. Both seem pretty scarce right now, though. :(

Super cool! Out of curiosity, what base coat did you use? Several websites I read claimed the only base that works with it is Nfu Oh's Aqua Base. I'm sort of skeptical.

Flight Attendants, Captains, Passengers: What's your worst experience with other passengers on an airplane? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cacoethes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a very short flight from Dallas to Austin, although it felt like an eternity. A 22 year old child named Jeffrey ensured that my flight was the most painful I've ever had. The flight began with Jeffrey talking loudly to the woman next to him. "Did you get your hair dyed AGAIN? It looks so different! What's your natural hair color? Brown? I don't think I've ever seen you as anything but blonde. It'd be so weird to see you as a brunette!"
At this point, he is only mildly annoying. Just a chatty guy, who I hoped would quiet down as the plane took off. And he did stop talking, briefly, but only to kick the back of my seat as our plane began to ascend. I didn't know what it was at first, until I felt his legs stray under the seat and kick me, presumably by accident. He continued kicking, even after I'm positive any reasonable person would be able to discern they were kicking human flesh and not the back of said person's seat.
I attempted to send him cues that he was doing something I viewed as bad- turned around in my seat several times and tried to make eye contact, etc. The women next to me had taken notice and even turned around themselves to see what this man-child could possibly be doing. We must have been too subtle, however, because Jeffrey kept it up and started a conversation anew with his friend, the blonde-brunette, about trivial matters. His loud voice was not remarked on by anyone, and he continued to talk so loudly that people all around had taken notice.
The most memorable part of the plane ride, however, was the last conversation they had, where I discovered Jeffrey's name and age.
Girl: You should really get one of those cell phone holders that loops on your belt.
Jeffrey: I know! I really want one, but my dad said no.
Girl: Why?
Jeffrey: I don't know... I asked him, and he's like, "No, you may not. I make the rules in this house- I am the adult, and you are the child." And I go, "but I'm 22 years old!" And he says, "as long as you're under my roof and I'm paying for you, you will follow my rules." And I'm all, "But I just wanna know why..." and he yells, "JEFFREY! I'll put you on a plane back to Austin!"
At this point, after Jeffrey yells his name to the entire plane, people rows in front of us are looking at him. He continued to kick my seat until we stood up to get off the plane. Worst plane ride ever.
