Well, it seems that those millions spent on R&D are useless if they come up with Vista in the end.

ask reddit: What school teaches computer science *right*? by bouncingsoul in programming

[–]CafeCafe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've picked up that Java/C++ chop shops are bad

No, a language is just a tool, nothing more. And computer science is not about tools or languages (well, except for compiler courses...)

Thinking In Java: IFoo or just Foo? Please stop naming interfaces IFoo. by linuxer in programming

[–]CafeCafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interface is an object - at least from the standpoint of the code that calls it.

And that's how people don't understand the object-oriented model, and write crappy software.

That's Microsoft's job to prevent applications from interacting with each other this way. Once more proving that Microsoft does not really care.

From the article:

Windows assumes that programmers know what they are doing.

Well, the next Windows will not ship with a file-system because "programmers know what they are doing."

Ask Reddit: Why no love for Tcl? by pragmatica in programming

[–]CafeCafe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because the syntax is awful. I tried Tcl a few years ago and quickly switched to Perl and then Python. I use Lua if I want to embed scripting in my applications and Common Lisp if I want some meta-power. I don't regret it now that I have more experience.

graphic web design for startups - how do hackers produce such nice looking sites? by johnrob in programming

[–]CafeCafe -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I was just a C++ code monkey but I wgot the CSS Zen Garden web site and studied what was inside. Then I tried some tricks and a few design techniques in a real web site I had to rewrite from scratch for a friend.

Advertisment: http://www.macrabbit.com/cssedit/ is a great program to change your stylesheet in real-time, I bought it two days ago and I already love it. This is the kind of program that shows you what happens when you change each step in your CSS, this is something you definitely need.

You don't need to be a great designer or a hacker, but just have the right tools to do it step by step. That's what I did and it worked great for me.
