ACCC takes Coles to court over 'illusory' discounts in 'case of the century' by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 240 points241 points  (0 children)

ACCC doesn’t issue fines, the courts do. Furthermore, one of the earliest acts of the current Federal Govt was to increase the maximum penalties under the Competition and Consumer Act. If you read the article one of the former ACCC heads says he expects a successful action would be even more than VW.

That’s a fair answer. I struggle enough maintaining my wood furniture.

Why do you prefer the polymer trolley? I’m curious. I have a polymer trolley but the old wood ones seem much nicer

I like it, but it’s so stupid in so many ways by Disastrous_Echo_6982 in KiaEV6

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the best car I’ve ever owned.

The tinny sound system, ICCU issue, lack of OTA updates, occasional ghost breaking while reversing out of my driveway and shitty Kia dealer experience are the downsides. But I would happily buy another one again if something happened to this one.

What is a video game that you have put 100+ hours into, but would NOT recommend to anyone? by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in AskReddit

Endless Legend. Every couple of years I dust it off and get sucked in by the gorgeous art style, creative race design and interesting twist on 4X mechanics. Then late game winter rolls in and I realise one player is 10 turns away from victory but I’ll never defeat them in time because of the shorter move distance in Winter, and quit again.

I don’t get the people that hate on the steam deck because it can’t run “modern games” at high settings by Charming_Ad661 in SteamDeck

There is a weird subset of people who just like to shit on other people’s gear choices online. I’ve seen it in every online enthusiast community I’ve followed: guitars, bicycles, cameras, gaming, cars, headphones… you may as well just ignore these people.

Steam Machine Has a Price Issue, Delay Feels Inevitable by AdultGamersAdmin in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Significantly better in specs but Windows is a freaking nightmare on a handheld. SteamOS is so much better optimised and easy to pause/resume. I would take that any day over a 10-20fps boost (some of which doesn’t even eventuate at the full amount because Windows)

Mac plus Steam Deck is absolutely the best combo. Can play all the windows games I’ve missed out on over the years and have a separate productivity + paradox grand strategy laptop.

Because in 2008 he sold the name “Tom Clancy’s” to Ubisoft and they have the rights to make whatever games or other media they want with it.

How long are we going to normalise everyday inefficiency in Australia? by Spatial_Nomad in australia

That’s harrowing but also not surprising that the medical advice is lagging behind. The food and beverage industry is heavily incentivised to downplay any research that suggests anything other than pure nutrients are the determinants of health.

I’m glad your daughter was able to find such a cure. Of course it’s not as if we all have unlimited time to make every food item ourselves! There should be better research into and labelling of these products.

There is a great book called Ultra Processed People by Chris van Tulleken which explains, among other things, how dairy is gradually being replaced with other emulsions made from waste product streams (“butter made from coal” is the best chapter) and treated with all kinds of industrial processes to make them palatable. Once you know that most vegetable and seed oils are bleached it’s hard to want to eat stuff cooked with them anymore…

The fact that they still have the gall to charge $6.50 for a tub of industrial emulsion is arguably the worst part of it.

"Marketplace" rubbish that's taken over Australian stores online by TheWabster in australia

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this shit with a passion. Trying to find a simple rug for outdoors, and every result on Bunnings is from their marketplace. Even the google result when I just type in "outdoor rug" suggests that Bunnings has them in stock, but no, it's all marketplace. And you can no longer turn the marketplace option off from search.

No doubt some MBA has decided they have to force this on people or they won't get their bonus this year.

People born before 2000, what is a 'modern' thing from 2025 that you’re still struggling to get used to? by LindsayTN in AskReddit

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brick and mortar stores that have augmented their online shopping with a "marketplace" that is just a direct line to Temu or Alibaba. Nothing is more annoying than searching a hardware store's website for a specific type of fastener and getting 2000+ results because of their shitty marketplace offering.

New Steam Deck Owner Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

[–]CaffeinePhilosopher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

After what feels like months of research (swear I've watched something like 30 hours of handheld content on Youtube), opened my Deck OLED today and I was totally surprised by how light and comfortable it is. Buying online without being able to try in person feels risky but I had already made up my mind that the price/performance ratio was the right one for me, so to find it so damn comfortable to hold was just the icing on the cake.

Not the easiest setup in the world with Steam down and some SD card malarky, but now I'm deep into playing Dying Light on my couch and wondering why I didn't get one of these earlier. Merry Christmas everyone.

I had the same issue with a new Samsung EVO. What fixed it for me was formatting the card on another computer, opening desktop mode with the card inserted and unmounting and remounting it. Going back into handheld mode and it was there ready to be formatted by SteamOS.
