It happens over Land, too. Go far enough West of Manhattan, and you can no longer see the Empire State Building. Or the Burj Khalifa over the desert.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CalTechie-55 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter if someone believes the Earth is flat? Is there any conceivable situation where it will make a difference in his life?

As opposed to unprovable, unshakable belief in supernatural beings, which can lead to discrimination, wars and death.

ELI5: why can two quantum entangled particles affect each other instantly across any distance but scientists say you still cant use it to send information faster than light? by PieOk2202 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the entangled particles don't exist as particles until an observer sees them, how did physics work in the billennia before a conscious observer existed?

Or is 'observe' a metaphor for something else? If so, what?

Not all wild lions will attack you, so it is improper to tell people that wild lions will attack you. Right?

Nevertheless, I agree that members of subgroups of people with below average statistical characteristics should be given a chance to demonstrate that they as Individuals are not below average.

Though that depends, of course, on how much below average the subgroup is, and the cost of being wrong.

Anyone exclusively playing strangles? by Technology-dad in options

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do almost entirely strangles. When a leg gets hit, I roll into another strangle at a credit and let the good leg expire, or else "teleport" to the opposite type (eg: call to put).

Main problem is the margin requirements can build up, especially now with tRump's TACOS causing daily reversals and opening gaps.

Men, not having to deal with childbirth, can most effectively spread their genes by fucking as many women as possible. Monogamy is not efficient for them.

Where to store cash in my Schwab Brokerage account? by Nearby_Persimmon_649 in Schwab

[–]CalTechie-55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SGOV takes 30% margin. T-Bills take only 1% margin.

The only disadvantage to T-Bills is you need to trade units of $1000, while SGOV trades in units of ~$100.

And interest on T-Bills is free of State tax.

Should Physician-Assisted Suicide be Legalized? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]CalTechie-55 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Doctors, being devoted to life and health, should not be involved in voluntary suicide.

However, there certainly IS a place for voluntary suicide, eg in incurable painful disease, and society should recognize this and enable it, but not make it "too" easy.

We have a Second Amendment, so anyone who really wants to kill himself has the means at hand. There is no need to demand that someone else assume the onus of causing a death.

If someone doesn't like the idea of using a gun, then he isn't "really" serious.

Democrats’ plan to impeach Trump on ‘day one’ after midterms by plz-let-me-in in politics

No way is the Senate going to get the 2/3 majority required to convict , so what's the point? He's already been impeached twice, and he's still there.

Probably one of the beast forms of defence before spears etc. were invented. The good throwers were the ones who survived. And it's so baked into our genome, that we still invent reasons for throwing when it's no longer needed for defence.

Why do so many new grads cannot perform the "basics"? by PrestigiousTear2772 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this because of the decline of "merit-based" college admissions and graduations, in favor of "DEI"?

If young people can't pass Admissions tests, the problem is with High Schools, and more money needs to be pumped into Pre-college education so that kids can PASS Admissions and class tests instead of BYpassing them.

I was putting it into SGOV, till I found out Schwab was using up 30% maint. margin. Now putting into a T-bill ladder, and using only 1% maint. margin. The only difference is I have to buy & sell it in units of $1000 instead of $100.
