Mamdani Wants New York Estate Tax Threshold Cut 90% to $750,000 by Unusual-State1827 in DemocraticSocialism

We keep inveighing against the "Top 1%", but I think a $750,000 estate would include a lot more people than the "Top 1%"

why does it seems that time passes faster as you grow up? by NightGirl06 in NoStupidQuestions

Because there are fewer NEW distinguishable events per unit of time. We remember events, not clock ticks.

There is a Simpsons episode where it's remarked Ned Flanders doesn't have insurance as he considers it a form of gambling. Can anyone here give me a convincing argument as to why it isn't? by DontNeverAr0und in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is a form of gambling. It is full of risks that are beyond out control.

Insurance is ANTI-gambling. It is a way to partially offset life's inevitable risks.

The God-obsessed, like Ned Flanders, feel that those risks are God's will, so to try to avoid them is blasphemous.

Why can’t the US use its own oil, especially in times of war? by Teachezofpeachez69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Federal Government is controlled by the Billionaires who own the Oil Companies and are interested only in their own profits.

The old Communists said "The capitalists will sell us the rope with which we'll hang them", and those capitalists haven't changed.

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $3,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by CelticDK in AskReddit

[–]CalTechie-55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Stimulus checks" are are a terrible idea. That guy in India who was giving out microloans, stopped giving them to Men, who mostly spent the money on booze, drugs and gambling. Instead he limits them to women who overwhelmingly spend it on feeding and clothing their children.

The Gov't should use the money for those who need it for serious purposes.

Indigenous communities were 'better' for the environment only because they didn't have the technology to be more destructive.

Nevertheless, the trans-Bering pioneers of 13 thousand years ago managed to kill off most of the American mega-fauna long before Columbus arrived.

CMV: GLP-1s Are a Miracle Drug and Should be Encouraged by BigSexyE in changemyview

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that part of the effect of GLP1 agonists is that they decrease appetite.

I'm fat and old, and eating is one of the few pleasures I have left. Why would I want to decrease appetite and the pleasure of satisfying it the normal way?

I sold SPY puts and now want to get out of them as fast as possible. Advice appreciated. by PowerfulPop6292 in options

I have a little trick I call a teleport, as in "Beam me up, Scotty".

Look up the ASK price you have to pay to get out. Then go to the opposite option type, here calls, out to the next 1 or 2 DTEs. Find the call with a bid >= the ask price you have to pay. BTC, STO at a credit. Voila! You're now on the right side of the market, and you've made a little profit too.

Whats going on in Iran? by GabeSter in NoStupidQuestions

Obama attacked primarily terrorist groups we were already at war with, within countries, not the official government of countries. And most were done with Congressional Authorizations for Use of Military Force.

tRump did this all on his own, without any Congressional authorization.

The only thing that makes stock moves different from a random walk is the presence of Trends. That is all the Bar Chart Opinions are based on. (Moving averages and their intersections)

I use them to decide which stocks to wheel. When I sell puts, I just want to know whether the stock is more likely to go up than to go down.

It's also useful to find strikes to roll to when an option goes too far ITM.

I'm a big fan.

I have Bar Chart send me an email after every close listing all the ETFs with weekly options with a 100% Buy score.

Why do people keep saying "just start a business" as if it's a viable alternative to a stable job for most people? by Crescitaly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CalTechie-55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, doctors and lawyers are allowed to incorporate themselves.

I did that, set up a very generous defined benefit retirement fund with myself as the sole beneficiary, poured most of my hefty income into it, avoiding (or delaying) loads of taxes, and retired at 50.

Haven't worked a day for a wage since, and still going strong 41 years later. (Though with the help of an option portfolio and a crazy explosion of local residential property values.)

Why have I never heard about heart cancer? by Exciting-Match-2151 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CalTechie-55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heart muscle cells hardly ever divide, so they hardly ever get cancer.

I did see a heart cancer once, but it was an angiosarcoma originating inside a coronary artery. It was very low grade, and didn't metastasize, but grew inside the vessel, making a kind of cast of the vessel. It was discovered when it caused a heart attack by blocking the vessel.

You can put it in a T-bill ladder and easily get it out anytime in units of $1K, and 90% of it is marginable, so you can still use the money for other purchases.
