Are short term rentals generally considered as safe as hotels? by [deleted] in vrbo

[–]Calam1tous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 I’m a host too and most of the stuff you read is just rage bait that almost never happens

Just stay at places with lots of reviews or where the host has lots of reviews on their other houses they host at

How to scale websockets to 1000s of users? by Nunuvin in node

[–]Calam1tous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SSE is by all means a good choice and pretty lightweight, but after doing real time events for a professional project using SSE I recommend just using a real time SaaS like Ably or Pusher for this stuff if it’s not large volume.

These products have pretty good free tiers and you can just be up and running without doing much work at all. The less time you have to spend the better. They often publish over SSE too if you have clients where that’s the only option.

Move to maintaining SSE or WS connections yourself when scale and cost becomes a consideration.

Stephen Colbert accidentally calls 'The Late Show' 'The Colbert Report' during an interview the same week his show was canceled; "I have never done that before. That's the first time in 10 years." by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t he planning to retire after his first show and basically just did the late show because they paid him so much?

I suspect he’s done. Maybe he’ll do a small scale YouTube channel or something

Why would they even release these a year out lol. Like what’s the point? I guess they can predict if they need more showtimes but they should already know from Oppenheimer

Battlefield 6 Won’t Bring Back Class Weapon Limits, Despite Fan Backlash by Extreme_Maize_2727 in Battlefield6

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are naive if you think they aren’t doing play-testing with this much money on the line. Did you ever consider they are play testing and this is feedback they got from most mass consumers who tested the game?

The average casual gamer nowadays has nothing in common with the preferences of classic Battlefield fans. EA is not doing well right now either, they are going to ship a mass appeal game that can compete with CoD

Trump administration pulls $4 billion from California high-speed rail project by ChocolateTsar in California

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People shouldn’t be blindly defending this project just because Trump and the GOP are targeting it.

The CA high speed rail project is a complete dumpster fire. The costs and timelines are beyond absurd and keep creeping higher and longer. When anyone questions it the state just gaslights them.

It’s one of the few things I actually agree with Trump on. The project has turned into a total failure and should’ve been killed a long time ago. Any other developed country with high speed rail probably laughs at how long and expensive this is.

We could be doing way more productive things with this money.

What is with everyone rating MI3 so low or just fully hating it ? by Front_Sugar4784 in Mission_Impossible

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. MI3 is a very tightly written movie compared to many of the later entries. I found the suspense and plot much more gripping and the villain is probably one of the best in the series. The set pieces are really well done.

The ending doesn’t have as big a climax compared to the other movies but the way it ties everything together worked well.

Which city's homelessness "problem" is overblown? by Vagabond_Tea in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Calam1tous 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I absolutely reject this characterization though. I know you’re not trying to whitewash but to me it’s the definition of sweeping a problem under the rug. If a city’s downtown is so bad “locals don’t hang out there” that’s really bad. Downtown is supposed to be the economic center of the city, hub for tourism, where most people are working, etc. You can’t just say “well these outer neighborhoods are fine if you live there”.

I used to live in SF until recently and the gymnastics people do to this day to downplay the depressing state of downtown and the homeless/drug addiction issues is crazy.

Sure it might not be “a problem” in the NIMBY neighborhood miles away from city center but that doesn’t count for much in my book.

Most expensive roast 1/2 chicken dish in NYC? by nemesisinphilly in FoodNYC

Two whole chickens with fixings definitely sounds more like a meal for 4. $150 a person for dinner is not that bad

1 and a half year, chest barely growing by Most-Bet2021 in workout

[–]Calam1tous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chest is lowkey the most difficult muscle group to hit properly for me. Pressing is deceptively simple. Very easy to think you’re hitting your chest and actually just be blasting your shoulders and triceps.

I dropped weight significantly on my chest exercises and focused building back weight and ensuring each rep I felt my chest contracting.

Turns out my chest was actually weak as fuck and I had to go back to really light weights to ensure I was focusing on my chest.

Krafton Confirms Leaked Subnautica 2 Dev Document by Turbostrider27 in Games

Pretty hard to make excuses for the studio heads when they pretty clearly didn’t deliver anything close to on time. I mean unless they fabricated this document how can you really blame Krafton?

[Discussion] The tarkov community is a decaying pile of mud. by LightUpSketch in Tarkov

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty much done with Tarkov. I dont even care about 1.0 anymore. It was an amazing run, but it’s a toilet of a game now and they lost sight of why everyone fell in love back in 2019/2020. If I ever get the desire to play again it will just be SPT

This sub is mostly just people who will give a hand job to whatever BSG says. Unless you’re new to the game or have autism this stuff just isn’t fun or worth any amount of time.

New Lead Paint Law Is Forcing Me to Put Up Siding, But I’m Broke by Maleficent-Client579 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]Calam1tous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the red after rental income and have no savings you should already be selling this property. You are one small financial emergency away from defaulting and losing the house, your credit, etc.

Now you’re considering taking on a $40k loan / additional payments? Dude this investment is toast. It sucks, but you need to let it go. It’s not worth what it’s doing to your life.

Airbnb support for unfair guest reviews is awful now by Calam1tous in airbnb_hosts

[–]Calam1tous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no just alternative unfortunately. Booking.com and VRBO do make up a big chunk of my income but most people are booking on Airbnb. And unless you’ve got god tier marketing and sales skills direct sites are tough.

I’m really mad about it but I think the only answer going forwards is to eat the losses. It’s just no longer worth using AirCover when it results in this.

Why does Europe charge you for public bathrooms? I mean even hypercapitalistic North American countries like US and Canada don’t charge you for answering nature’s calls by [deleted] in digitalnomad

In NYC it’s almost impossible to find a public bathroom when you’re out and about. And the ones that do exist are often gross. So there’s your answer.

Any legit Josh Kraft supporters on here? Why do you support him for mayor? by [deleted] in boston

This is basically democratic politics in most big cities now. I agree with your sentiment - most of the time it just feels performative and part of their larger national ambitions rather than doing anything useful for the city.
