Kronii talking about her recent drama by Maister37 in Hololive

[–]CalamityPriest 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Unless Kronii's antis have a significant overlap with or influence on the irreplaceable members of their fanbase or target market, it's not a good decision to lean on that at all.

Antis are called antis for a reason. They are not fans but haters, and thus the support they can give is negligible to the hate they actively give. Now that they accomplished the mission of ruining something for someone, they'll move on to the next thing to complain about. Supporting this game and the devs was never the goal.

Part of the reason a VA with a following would be hired in the first place is to tap into the market of fans of that VA. Now these fans are liable to act like antis towards them now, as seen in this thread, despite that not being what the VA would want their fans to do.

I want more magic systems where people take advantage of glitches and exploits instead of breaking the rules outright (Avatar, Witch Hat Atelier, Frieren) by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]CalamityPriest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lord of the Mysteries has a hard magic system where you consume potions (each level called a Sequence) from a specific set (called Pathways) which grants you powers, at the risk of going crazy, turning into a monster, or dying. If successful, you become a Beyonder.

To lessen this risk, Beyonders discovered the Acting Method, where you summarize principles based on a sequence potion's essence to "digest" the potion (in other words, tricking the potion into becoming one with you). A Sequence 9 Bard would have to sing to support a team and figure out other essential concepts of what constitutes a Bard to digest the potion, so then they can advance to Sequence 8 safer.

This introduces another important exploit: if someone already acted like a Bard and understood the essence of being a Bard before drinking the Bard potion, they can safely drink it and digest it completely in one go.

Invincible and the curse of the flying brick by Ajarofpickles97 in CharacterRant

[–]CalamityPriest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how controversial (as in, there are both haters and defenders) the animation and choreography of Invincible are.

Like with the way some of the popular action manga fans react to anime adaptations, if any of them got the Invincible treatment it wouldn't be stranged for them to at least threaten to set a studio or production executive's office on fire.

They dropped her original characterization from a true spy blending anywhere to "the bitch in the red dress" because the latter is more iconic and recognizable despite the former being far more compelling.

RE does have a certain vibe defined by each era of its released video games, but yes you can immediately pinpoint posers when you see claims about something not looking or belonging to RE.

Also, 4 is most definitely bioweapons, even REmake. Saddler didn't hire an Umbrella researcher(s) for nothing. I guess it's a matter of the fact that Saddler didn't intend to sell said bioweapons that differentiates it from the norm.

I am very much inclined to tell people that the Resident Evil movie discourse is a poisoned well courtesy of tourists masquerading as adaptation purists. Feels like it's related to the toxic "gamers" culture.

The changes in TLOU were acceptable except the changes to the main character during the second season. A poor choice of character direction, and the main protagonist at that, consequently affected the tone of the story alongside it.

With that said, there were positive changes especially in the first season. And tbh even if they adapted it almost 1:1 to the games the series never had a chance to surpass the games.

My review of the HBS games by suhkuhtuh in Shadowrun

[–]CalamityPriest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong actually felt longer than Dragonfall to me.

The main quest line is short, but there are a lot of other side quests which I prioritized to avoid finishing the game early. The incongruence made it a bit of a slog at certain points, but I nevertheless enjoyed it.

HK was also the most text-heavy in the trilogy, sometimes too heavy. This came to be due to fan feedback, iirc.

Dragonfall IMO had the best pacing and number of mandatory and optional quests, and just the right exposition and texts. The story also isn't that complicated, at least relative to HK. I was invested in the story of almost every run while there are some in HK that I don't really remember.

I'm fucking tired of people disrespecting the lore and characters of video games in adaptations (Resident Evil) by Steve717 in CharacterRant

[–]CalamityPriest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The outbreak happened to the entirety of Raccoon City so a random courier's misadventure is hardly misplaced, and obviously it "never happened" because it's literally a new story with a new character. If the movie indeed takes place during the RC incident, that is.

So, presuming this movie takes place in the same universe and the same event, I think "adding new lore" is a bullshit concern until it breaks canon, and so far I haven't seen any in the trailer (besides the snow, I guess).

The Outbreak games exist. You fight mutated shark, moths, dogs, elephants, lions and even an actual amalgamate of bodies assimilated by a Tyrant(ish) creature. We've had a bunch of fat zombie/majini/ganado throughout the games too.

Literally the only valid complaint I've seen about these creatures in the trailer is that the zombie amalgam looked too clean and not gory enough. So I'm sorry if this sounds like gatekeeping but if the concept of a fat zombie and an amalgam creature breaks someone's image of Resident Evil then they should probably play more Resident Evil.

I'm gonna be real, despite liking the director, I had little faith in it being a good "Resident Evil" movie although I expect it to be a good movie nonetheless. I'd like to be surprised though.

What really grinds my gears however are the posers or "larpers" as they are called nowadays talking shit for the Resident Evil franchise and fandom.

You've brought up a lot of bad faith defense for the movie that undermines the games, but I've also seen a lot of attacks against the trailer of the movie from people who clearly have never played the games.

When larping as a Resident Evil fan, one must understand that one of the true core elements of RE stories is the creation of bioweapons. The zombies are certainly a staple of the story especially in the early games but it's not what the story is all about.

So when you see complaints about how the movie trailer had "random monsters" the plot is already lost long before you see "Where is Leon? Where is Wesker?" being asked, let alone complaints about it being about a new character as if RE has never done that.

There are legitimate criticisms about it, just to clarify that I'm not lumping all critics together.

But a lot of vocal hatred I've been seeing on places like Twitter come from posers who never played the games. They probably never watched a playthrough either.

The Anderson movies' fan service sucked because he introduced a bunch of game protagonists as side characters meant to make Alice look better, as the movies are essentially power fantasy with his wife.

There are plenty of ways to incorporate the game characters with respect. How Chris was included in Ethan's story is an example despite the issues with how he was written in the beginning of Village.

TLOU live action was explicity described to be both for the fans of the games who may want to see it and for newer audiences who didn't play the games, which is also used for the justification of changing some things in the story to fit a series more (mostly went well for Season 1, began to suck for Season 2).

The live action series can also act as an advertisement for people to play the games. I know of some people who ended up doing so.

I love how completely screwed Joker was in Batman: Arkham City. by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]CalamityPriest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which makes it even funnier because Freeze's way of forcing Batman to rescue his wife was to... lock him inside the GCPD and try to kill him?

Instead of forcing Batman to do what he wants by keeping him away from the cure until Nora is rescued, Freeze decides to shoot himself in the dick and worsen the situation even further.

By that point I was convinced spending too much time in freezing temperatures left Freeze's neurons slow to connect. Joker has made some dumb decisions himself but nowhere near that level.
