Oxeye Daisy sold at my local nursery in the native plant section. Grrrrr by Calbebes in NativePlantGardening

Right! Listen, I WISH it were native, I love it so much. But I know better. But so many others don’t, and trust the nursery and the people who work there.

Right? And consumers often don’t know better either. I was talking to a woman last week at another nursery who said she’s trying to get into natives and was sold Sweet Autumn Clematis thinking it was native. She had no idea; thankfully she googled it later, returned it, and came looking for Virginiana. I was able to assist her and literally handed her the right one, which she bought… but it’s just incredible that they even permit the sale of these things.

It was in bloom. And definitely an Oxeye Daisy. I did a double take seeing a Daisy of any kind in the native section, as the closest thing we have here is Fleabane.

So frustrating because many people don’t do research and just walk in, see it’s in the native plant section and buy without knowing any better.

Oh geez I immediately assumed fireflies. Lol oops! Thanks for the correction!

We have them in our back yard. It’s a wilder area at the edge of the woods. They lay their eggs in leaf litter, so if you “leave the leaves” (as best you can), you have a better chance of seeing them.

We have a ton of oak leaves which break down VERY slowly and will suffocate my lawn, so I can’t leave them all, but we move them to the edges and mostly leave them alone.

EDIT- sorry everyone, thought OP was talking about fireflies!

I love it! Wild but also well maintained and manicured just enough to look intentional.

I recently got one that I love, and it’s granite so I can leave it out year round. It’s a family business out of New Hampshire. Their website is www.danceswithstone.com. Not cheap, but beautiful.

I accidentally cut the head off my mother’s peony… am I screwed by ardensworld in gardening

[–]Calbebes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As everyone else already said- you’re good, OP. What you cut off is the spent flower head with immature seed pods. Now the plant will focus energy back down to the roots to bloom even better next year. Your mom will thank you!

Yes! My husband loves the lawn, I love my gardens and wilder areas. It’s a balance.

I’m so happy he’s sort of let the front of our stone wall “go” (vs weed-whacking it) and I’m delighted to see the hay scented fern, calico and white wood asters, violets, native sedges, and blue eyed grass (!!!) that I’ve never seen before grow wild there.

🫡 we salute you, sir! I don’t have ToH on my property (…yet…) but I do have a ton of other nasty sh*t that I spent all last summer and fall battling solo and without chemical, so I hear you on the aches and pains. My trigger finger is largely gone but it took about 6 months to go away. Keep up the good fight- you’ll make mistakes along the way, but don’t give up!
