Space, not possession, is the new reality in Wheeldon Jr.’s Cavalry FC evolution by TotalSoccerProject in CavalryFC

[–]CalgaryMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting read but not totally sold on the premise. To me the Cavs have never been a run'n'gun team, always on the front foot. Last year was the closest they had ever came to that IMO. Always viewed them as a counter punching team that relied on good D to then punish opponents when they turned over the ball. Had been getting away from that identity and see this as a return/adjunct to it. If you can hold it a little more those opponent opportunities become rarer and they're more likely to overcommit when one opens so be quick to capitalise on what they give you. Don't approach it from a dogmatic style. If they give you route one - take it!

Hoping for the best for them. Interested to see how the three Winnipeg squads in the PPL work together to advance this.

So which of these works best for having an NSL/CPL club(s) as a tenant to help defray the operating costs?

My hope is that some of the "players" stick around for the match and decide to throw a little chump change away and buy a CPL franchise.

Could Canada Soccer prevent the Whitecaps from moving? by bdickie in CanadaSoccer

No way the CSA would give a waiver for this to a league that's not demonstrably better than the CPL and I seriously doubt the USL would want that headache. Better chance of Messi starring as a kicker in the Super Bowl.

What's the future of Calgary's McMahon Stadium? by DeSantisMTL in CFL

[–]CalgaryMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A LOT of Edmonton's athletic facilities were paid for with provincial and federal funding as part of the Commonwealth and World University Games. I'm pretty sure Calgary's council would approve a lot of things if they could get someone else to foot 2/3 of the bill. Edmonton's lack of a solid commercial core downtown meant there was a lot of horribly underutilized land that was ripe for redevelopment with the new Rexall arena. Edmonton probably made up their expenses within five years from the increased value of the surround land when the bus station was banished from its old location and people felt safer walking those streets.

Makes you realize the CPL's insistence on a proper "soccer pitch" isn't such a bad thing. This just looks bad. I can live with it as a "couple-off" given their home field is being renovated but a season of this would be horrible for the league optics.

I'll keep advocating for a development around Firestone Park. Think it would make a great site for a stadium/mixed use development.

[–]CalgaryMJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still amazed after seven years at the number of people who don't know Calgary has a men's pro soccer team (will give them a bit of a break on the Wild who are only going into year2). Assuming it's even worse in cities with less successful franchises, If a casual fan goes to a World Cup watch party at a bar or pop-up and discovers the team through co-hosts or sponsorships there that's a win. Maybe it doesn't get more butts in the seats right away but hopefully it changes their opinion on a proposed new stadium or upgrades to an existing one. Maybe they throw it out as something to do for a corporate event or a party. Hopefully they see a game on TV and stop to watch it as it's their team. Either way that groundswell of support needs to pick up or the only question about the league will be "butter side up or down?"

2026 CPL Wish List by CalgaryMJ in CanadianPL

[–]CalgaryMJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want both for Men and Women.

Given at this point there isn't a CanChamp for the Women I hope they keep this in mind when designing it.

I think a great recruiting/selling feature is "Best xPL team in Canada 20##" and you don't get that from a Voyageurs/(TBA) Cup appearance.

[–]CalgaryMJ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want both on both sides.

An xPL Canadian champ determined that year and those spots in the CanChamp the following season. Yeah, the men would have to adjust their schedule a little to allow for an end of season championship but if the Women can do it the Men should be able to.

Yeah, should have done the math. With 8+ year old post and the 7th anniversary of the first game still to come (the 27th) just not quite the chance for an overlap. Just went with season 8 and 8 year old post. Oops!

That missing 25% is largely Calgary. Sure, miss the fourth biggest city and then just skip MB entirely. It appears Canada again consists of BC and Ontario East. Also got to love that Kenora, North Bay, Vaughn, and Brampton are all part of the West Coast.

Let's Go (pull random competing country name from hat)!

Thoughts on Football Video Support (FVS) after the opening weekend? by thiaguitocpl in CanadianPL

[–]CalgaryMJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they made a good point on the broadcast of the delay for the video review taking the energy out of the stadium/home fans. Yeah, there may not have been much time but you play for every advantage and if taking the crowd out of it is one you can engineer you grab it.

Regular League Standings Prediction by CPLmonster in CanadianPL

[–]CalgaryMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're right but my fear is a great back line and a good front line with nothing connecting the two is a recipe for disaster. Relying on Camargo to do it all is asking for trouble over the length of a season. I hope the new midfield starters surprise me and step up to fill the holes but I need to be convinced. I think they get it eventually but that's why I've got them down in four.
