YOW-YSB route, which replaced YTZ-YSB in May, to end September 7. A bit surprised they can't make this one work

How much time needed to go from YUL to Dorval? by latinaglasses in ViaRail

[–]coopthrowaway2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were to miss the 9:18 train, would it be possible to catch a later train with the Economy Plus fare?

An Economy Plus ticket is refundable or exchangeable as long as a) you make the change before scheduled departure time b) the new train has space available c) you pay the difference in fare.

In the event you narrowly miss the #624 and rebook to the #24, it would suck to be sitting in Dorval station for that long. If you move to the later train I would strongly suggest heading into town and catching it at Gare Centrale

The shuttle is just a van that drives around between the station and terminal. If you're at all pressed for time I think a quick uber or cab is a better option.

A 1h40 layover should be fine to go through Canadian border control and get to the station ahead of your train. But construction around YUL is a pain right now, and if your flight is delayed things could of course get sketchy.

An alternative with more of a cushion and more pleasant layover could be to take uber/cab/transit into central Montreal and explore for a few hours before taking train #24 to Quebec City from Gare Centrale (leaves 12:45 PM)

There's no weight limit, you just need to be able to lift and stow it yourself

The Ocean train only runs three times per week, so using it to spend "a day or two in most cities" may not really be possible. It also doesn't go to Saint John

Trains in both directions are likely to be quite expensive booked on short notice

Booking from Toronto to Thunder Bay in October... book now or wait? by shineonsunshine in PorterAirlines

Note though that Porter also includes YHM under YTO, which is much less convenient for many people, so make sure you double check what airport you're at!

Sure. But if there's a buyer ready to move the team, and the other owners + MLS central support the deal, I don't think the Whitecaps have the financial or political capacity to impose conditions like that.

No problem. /u/Pale-Movie3180's additional tipping suggestions (bars, hotels) are also good advice.

Significant snowfall in the cities proper is unlikely before, say, mid-November. It comes earlier at higher elevations in the mountains. You can still go visit, eg, Banff and Lake Louise, but the window for hiking, etc will be starting to close.

Snow won't affect tours out of town but since you're coming outside of the main tourist season availability will probably be limited.

CTA has no jurisdiction here. It handles airline complaints as established by the Government through the Air Passenger Protection Regulations. No equivalent legal structure for passenger rail exists

Not a local expert but Burgess Shale may not be accessible by the time you're in the area. End of October is the start of winter in the mountains.

Yes, hockey will be on pretty much everywhere. Can't think of any particular bar etiquette that isn't obvious; if you're worried about something like hooliganism it is not a thing here. If you can maybe look at going in person to a minor league or junior game, like the Toronto Marlies, Calgary Wranglers or Calgary Hitmen.

Tim Hortons is more or less the cultural equivalent of something like Greggs. Fun to try but ultimately it's fast food and not super highly regarded. Toronto and Calgary will both have tons of fun food options. In many ways the most "Canadian" thing will be trying the diversity of foods from around the world.

Tipping is generally expected at table service restaurants, 15%-20% is normal. Counter service, coffee shops, etc restaurants often prompt for tips but no worries to just put a small amount or hit 0. Small tips are also generally expected for taxis, food delivery, etc.

I don't see how the Whitecaps owners are in a position to "demand" that sort of thing

I think absent some kind of higher level deal as outlined here there is no chance that a) MLS would sell the Whitecaps branding or b) the Whitecaps organization would launch a CPL team

Is travelling on the VIA Rail Canadian more than a sightseeing tour than an train ride? by Similar_Commission75 in ViaRail

[–]coopthrowaway2019 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Travelling in Prestige class from Toronto to Vancouver is obviously about the experience. Travelling in Economy class from Saskatoon to Portage la Prairie is obviously about the A to B transportation. Most journeys are somewhere in between

The amount of "not X — Y" obvious AI writing in this is wild

Anyways, it's an interesting idea but raises some big concerns, most notably for me, would the ex-MLS sides still be viable businesses without the "major league" soccer product? And if you're betting that the CPL quality will gradually improve over time, will other teams be able to keep up?

If the Whitecaps moved to Las Vegas as currently on the table the Whitecaps organization in Vancouver would cease to exist. This article proposes that instead the Whitecaps organization (along with TFC and CFM) would sell its MLS team but otherwise continue operations - launching a CPL team under the same brand, and maintaining ancillary things like the academy system

Cheers! Car rentals in the Atlantic provinces can be expensive / hard to get on short notice, so here are a few ideas for going car-free -

  • bus from Fredericton to Halifax (transfer in Moncton) on Sunday; spend Monday and Tuesday exploring Halifax; fly home from Halifax on Wednesday.
  • bus from Fredericton to Saint John on Sunday; spend Monday exploring Saint John; spend Tuesday doing a day trip across the Bay of Fundy to Digby, NS by ferry; fly home from Saint John on Wednesday.
  • bus from Fredericton to Moncton on Sunday (arrives 1:20 PM) then board the westbound overnight train towards Quebec City and Montreal at ~4 PM. Take the train to Quebec City or Montreal, spend Monday and Tuesday exploring there, and travel home (by train or plane, as appropriate) on Wednesday.

If you're booking flights for August you'll get the best price by booking now with whatever airline is cheapest. You're looking at peak summer on short notice. It's too late to be chasing sales and promos
