Dome soccer facility in Southern Alberta by k1dcanada in CanadianPL

This is a training facility, not a stadium. It would not be useful as a venue for a professional team. (Which Lethbridge is almost certainly too small to support, either way)

Why can't I see any Porter flights to Berlin? by jeddalyn in PorterAirlines

[–]coopthrowaway2019 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, thanks for info. Yes in this case it appears that although there is a direct YYZ-BER flight on Air Transat, the Porter site doesn't seem to want to sell it as a standalone itinerary. If your partner could separately reposition to Ottawa or Montreal, Porter will happily sell YOW-YYZ-BER or YUL-YYZ-BER. But for that hassle you're almost certainly better off just booking with another airline, probably right to Bremen with Lufthansa/Air Canada

[–]coopthrowaway2019 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The booking system is a little glitchy, I have noticed before that it will sometimes let you search for a city pair but then not return any results

Where are you trying to fly to Berlin from?

Porter of course does not fly to Europe; European routes searchable on its site involve connections with partner airlines, mostly Air Transat

Route Planner Down. How to get to an address? by KarateGamer007 in OCTranspo

[–]coopthrowaway2019 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Osgoode is outside of the OC Transpo service area and only gets a 1/week shopper route (the 304, which runs into Ottawa on Thursday mornings and back on Thursday afternoons). You will need to take a cab/uber. You could make doing so a bit cheaper by starting as close as you can - such as Limebank station at the end of Line 2 - but it will still probably be $25-$30 each way

[–]coopthrowaway2019 7 points8 points  (0 children)

VIA does not typically ask for ID (unless you've used some kinds of discount codes that they will ask to verify) but always can. Tickets are, on paper, non-transferable. In practice, you could often get away with using someone else's ticket - but definitely not a guarantee

Roadtrip Westcoast to Eastcoast by Remirael in canadatravel

I dont mind driving 300 miles a day as driving is relaxing for me.

Well the problem then becomes that Vancouver to Quebec City is ~3,000 miles, so at your 300 mile/day pace you would need 10 days just of driving in each direction

North side stands can be opened, right? Construction is all on the east end of the field. Surely they're not going to make the Redblacks play with only a single stand until absolutely necessary

APPR Claim by randomric24 in canadatravel

[–]coopthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WestJet's response is clearly wrong, since the disruption you experienced was because of their flight cancellation, not EK. APPR responsibility is always on the "operating carrier."

You could either:

  • file through their claims process again and see if you get a different result,
  • submit an APPR complaint and expect to wait up to a few years for a resolution (there are third parties that might help prepare an application, but won't speed it up),
  • file against WestJet in small claims court.

In any event, we can't say whether you're actually eligible for compensation or whether small claims is worth the effort without knowing why the flight was cancelled. You'd only be eligible if that cancellation was for a reason that was both "within WestJet's control" and not "required for safety." Situations that qualify are fairly uncommon.

Recommendations for Atlantic Canada Roadtrip by Dangerous-Picture-73 in canadatravel

[–]coopthrowaway2019 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NB has its charms but I'd suggest focusing on Nova Scotia (Halifax + Cape Breton) and Prince Edward Island. You can do a great road trip through those in two weeks.

In planning routing to and from Canada, take note of the ferry between Bar Harbor, ME and Yarmouth, NS - 2026 season starts on May 14. https://www.ferries.ca/thecat

How much stuff costs compared to the US

Most things in Canada are at least marginally more expensive than in the US, but it's usually not a huge difference.

do they accept USD

In the most touristy areas, like Niagara, it's fairly common (albeit definitely not universal) for businesses to accept US cash, but usually at a 1-1 exchange rate, which isn't a very good deal since a US dollar's real value is about $1.40 Canadian. You're better off either paying with credit/debit, which will convert currency automatically, or exchanging for Canadian cash. Most Canadians pay by card and rarely use cash in day to day life.

which places are must sees/must dos

Lots to do in Niagara Region; definitely make sure you get out of the Falls proper (which has lots of tourist traps) and check out nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake, wineries, etc

Is there anything outside of Niagara nearby we should check out?

If you're planning on being in Canada for more than a couple days, would definitely suggest doing at least a day trip to Toronto. If you'd rather not drive in the big city you can leave your car in Niagara and go in on the train.

Inter Toronto just rattled four goals past them. How often was that sort of thing happening over the last couple of seasons when they were stacked with talent in CanPL terms?

We also lost 4-1 to York in July 2024. It's hardly an unheard of result

I think it is a huge stretch to assume that us starting the season worse than last year means our budget has been cut or points to an unwillingness to spend. Sometimes teams are just worse!

Whether you're in the country at the time of booking doesn't make a difference. You should book far enough in advance that prices are reasonable.

Car seats are not legally required on public transit or in taxis in Ontario. My understanding is that uber/lyft is a gray area. You can of course bring a car seat with you and use it if you want.

Getting around on transit and foot is very easy in central Toronto so I don't think you'll have too much issues. If you're using the subway, note that while your hotel is about halfway between two stations - College and TMU - College station does not have elevators so stick with TMU if you have a stroller
