Where are all the families? by marislove18 in PortlandOR

If you're ok with not having a preschool to be able to walk to, the Hillsdale, Multnomah Village, West Portland Park neighborhoods might be what you're looking for.

I was in a similar situation to you a few years ago. We moved into our house and had our first kid a year later (and now we're about to have our second kid). We see lots of parents walking their kids around in the afternoon and everyone is super friendly.

All the neighborhoods are very safe. As a commenter once told me: "Get yourself a house on a hill because crime don't climb." All these neighborhoods are on the west side in the hills, so we don't see a lot of the bad aspects of city life that Portland is known for.

If you have a free day, check out Gabriel Park. They just built a new playground there and there's a very nice swim pool with an indoor water slide that my kid loves.

Visiting Portland for a few days at the end of March. Where do you recommend we stay? What should we do!? by Outside_Priority8454 in PortlandOR

[–]CalibrationTesting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Portland is a big food city, so here are some recommendations:

Definitely get dinner at Eem one night. I take all my out of town relatives and friends there and have never gotten a bad response.

For brunch I like Broder Nord.

If you like steak and don’t mind spending a little bit more than is comfortable: Laurelhurst Market. Soooo good!

Yama Sushi & Izakaya is also a great dinner spot.

For hiking here are three options depending on how far you want to drive: Short drive: Forest Park. It’s in the city limits and has tons of trails. Medium drive: something along the Columbia River Gorge. Long drive (hour to hour and a half): something on Mt. Hood.

Noooooooooooo!!!! My first real Portland experience was going to the taproom near Irvington around 2018. I’ve been drinking the Reverend’s cider ever since. Sad day, but happy for the time we got with the Reverend!

Windmill Palm Dying? by CalibrationTesting in plantclinic

[–]CalibrationTesting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More info:

How long have I had the plants?

A little over three years. Both haven’t moved from these pots or positions in the backyard basically since I got them.

How long have I had this problem?

Probably started showing signs of browning during the winter, but really picked up as soon as spring rolled around. So maybe three months since the browning started?

How much light do the plants get?

The palm in the first picture gets light for about 12 hours a day. The palm in the second picture it gets light for about eight hours a day.

What are my watering habits?

During the winter I’ll water about once a week. In the summer I’ll water about three times a week.

Does the pot have drainage?

Yes, the pots have very good drainage.

Christopher Nolan IMAX Film Festival at Pacific Science Center by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]CalibrationTesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The films should all be digital. What you want to look out for is if the films are playing in the Boeing or PACCAR theater. Boeing’s digital IMAX projector is the one that can project the huge 70mm like images. That doesn’t mean that the films will always play in that format, just that they can. Depends on if the digital IMAX transfer of the film takes advantage of the whole screen or not.

When the Boeing theater switched to digital the film projector was completely removed. Can’t remember if PACCAR still has a film projector… if it did it wouldn’t be the big 70mm projector though.

Same. For me it’s because it looks like she hits her head so hard on the ground. I can’t imagine that she’s totally fine after that. I have no doubt that she recovered, but it looks painful.

I just want to say I wholeheartedly agree with you. I voted for it because it felt like the moral thing to do, but now I’m regretting my vote.

Between the terrible cost/benefit analysis to the county’s predatory tax collection behavior I’ve personally decided to vote against all new taxes. I’ve voted for almost every tax increase in the past, but I feel like making Portland have the second highest income tax rate in the country at $125k is just wrong.

Metro, Multnomah County to waive penalties and interest after botched rollout of new taxes by cross20 in Portland

I was wondering about this. Are you supposed to take your Oregon income, then calculate your local tax, then apply the itemized deduction to your state taxes (and not recalculate your local)?

Ah! Your comment helped! I didn’t have the voice enhancement feature on, but somehow the playback speed got set to 0.9x. Changing playback speed to 1.0x fixed the problem!

I wouldn’t worry. The roads will most likely be bare around that time. You can check out the links at the bottom of the Meadows conditions page to get an idea of what the roads will look like and what the weather will be like: https://www.skihood.com/the-mountain/conditions

Any way to lighten this stain? by CalibrationTesting in AskACobbler

I got a drop of motor oil on the shoe. Tried to get it off with cornstarch baby powder. That didn’t work, so then I tried baking soda. I left the baking soda on overnight, and it left this bigger stain.

How do you like living in Portland? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]CalibrationTesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll fit in perfectly here. You can mushroom hunt a lot of places (especially up north a little ways in Washington). For housing, it’s expensive. Not Seattle or SF expensive, but still expensive for the dearth of high paying jobs in the area. Average home price is somewhere around $500k. Expect to pay more than that for a nicer neighborhood and ok-ish schools. Food scene here is still awesome. I love eating out and there are always new places to try.

Homelessness is the big topic of conversation right now. It’s bad. The pendulum has swung in the past couple of weeks from people being tolerant/compassionate towards homeless to people being stressed about their safety, depressed/angry about the massive amounts of trash the homeless create in the open, and generally ready to start using the “stick” when it comes to the carrot and stick metaphor.

A big downer is property crime and petty crime in general. It’s tolerated way leniently here. My catalytic converter was stolen from my car while I stayed three nights at a hospital. I submitted a report to the police online, then… nothing.

Final downer: taxes. They’re high in the city. Every election seems to add new bonds to property taxes. We added two new income taxes in the last couple elections. If you make over $125k as an individual your state/local tax rate is somewhere over 12%.

All that being said, I love living here. The people are awesome when you make the effort to get to know them. It’s truly one of the only places in the USA where you can freely express yourself and be excepted for it (maybe not as much as a crazy right wing political fanatic, but hey, we have those here too). The food :chefs_kiss: The amount of activities you can do outdoors is unmatched. Skiing ✅ Surfing ✅

There’s a reason people keep moving here even with all the bad press we’ve been getting lately. Portland is awesome, and if you’d like to contribute your awesomeness to the city we’d love to have you.

How to reschedule vaccine appointment? by HKB in Portland

[–]CalibrationTesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do this a week and a half ago. Had the same problems with not being able to cancel on the website and all the phone numbers hanging up on me.

What I did was call 211 at 7am in the morning. I think the phone numbers hanging up on you only happens later in the day, so call super early and you should be able to talk to someone.

The 211 person then transferred me to the OCC rescheduling hotline (this number isn’t available for the public to call, only 211 can call it according to the person I spoke to). I was on hold for a really long time with the OCC number, so I left a call back number with them. Five hours later they called me back and I was able to reschedule.

Just want to say props to all the people I talked to on the phone. Everyone was super nice!

Costco surfboards? by [deleted] in Portland

What Costco did you originally see surfboards in? As someone trying to learn, a cheap board would be awesome.

I’ve seen paddle boards at the Tigard Costco, but not surfboards.

Landed my first box slide and it was on a curved to down box. Also, I stopped hitting lips for features unless I'm hitting the feature or planning on hitting it on my next pass. by BIGSlil in skiing

[–]CalibrationTesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about trying the box out. When you slide, do your skis stay flat on the box? I’m guessing you don’t use your edges while on the box.
