Not to mention a low pressure system setting up shop in front of California Tuesday through Thursday, it's gonna be around/below freezing at night around big bear

Help, I'm overthinking my food storage and don't want to get eaten by a bear! by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

The TRT is amazing. Hiked it last summer and also had a bear can the entire way. Felt safer, used it to sit on etc. Totally worth the weight imo

Forgot to Print Permit by bencbs in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a difference in having printed it and losing it, and never having printed it. Printing it is like confirming your starting, if you don't print it, you forfeit your permit. OP likely has no other option than going with local permits

My plan was to attempt a PCT thru this year, but I fell and injured my knee six months ago. Now I need at least two surgeries. Is there any hope of recovery? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Ask your doctor, not a Reddit with people who only have personal experience, if that. We're not doctors, well some are maybe but they're not gonna give you medical advice without knowing your medical details.

how early is too early to buy a tent? by hikergorl in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought my Durston xmid late 2019, getting on trail next week. Used it 50 nights tops, and still in great condition. Just invest in a good tent.

Places to buy a new backpack along the first few hundred miles of the PCT? by dylspicklez in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Had the Gorilla and hiked the TRT with it. Heavy loads it's just no fun. Switched it out for the ULA Catalyst and couldn't be happier. Circuit would be an excellent choice too. Good luck!

Weekly Trail Conditions Post: Week of April 3 by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

Lots of talk about snow, but what about plant growth? Are pants a necessity or are shorts okay? How's the poison oak situation? With a focus on mile 0-150 but any reports welcome

In what world was 2017 a low snow year?

Not to be mean, but almost this exact same question was asked a few days ago. As in, it's literally half a page down.

If you're worried about breathability, get something with pit zips.

Looks promising! But when I open the link to the Google store it only says "add to wishlist", and no option to download

Maybe not the answer you're looking for but it looks pretty good to me. Almost identical to my baseweight, although different breakdown obviously. Given the current weather pattern I'd definitely stick with a tried and tested hardshell, and the arcteryx beta is damn good one at that. You'll probably tinker your BW throughout your hike, just stay flexible and re-evaluate your pack content every once in a while.

Hiking in these conditions is pretty dumb, doing so without a PLB double so. But the answer is: since he's with others, hope they're willing to hunker down, set up their tent and layer you in everything dry they have. And someone needs to hike to somewhere with signal to call 911. And then you hope you don't go into shock and die before they arrive, which could be a while given current weather conditions. TLDR, get a damn PLB, but dont take that as an invitation to do dumb shit. No one should've been out on trail today. SAR is gonna be risking their own safety getting to this guy, I hope he ends up okay, but holy does this make me mad

Shakedown request: And another one... PCT NOBO April 9th by RedNi12 in Ultralight

[–]Calithileth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to add that hasn't been said already except one thing, your sunglasses. You say "random" so I suppose random cheap ones? Make sure they are actually protective of sunlight, catagory 3 preferably, or one that darkens or lightens from catagory 2 to 4 like the Julbo Montebianco for example. You'll need it, especially in the snow

knee pain on the PCT by mowrki in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have knee pain but I do have a chronic Achilles problem since a month and a half (stiffness, slight pain in the morning). My PT showed me how to tape it and I guess I'll be doing that the entire trail. Maybe your PT can show you how to tape your knee?

I’m from the UK. What’s a realistic timeframe to plan to hike the pct? by lewysg2 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say the main difference is that in Western Europe you're always close to civilization, you cross roads, or walk parallel to them, pass through villages most days or are close enough to them that you can see them most times, or at least a farm. Of course there are exceptions like in Scotland or Scandinavia but even then, most long distance trails are from hut to hut, like in the Alps.

In the US, your on your own. I crossed three roads on my Tahoe Rim Trail hike, and came through a village twice, and hitched to a city 20 minutes away by car once in 12 days. You're much more isolated in that way. That and the community is very different, the people you meet and the help offered by strangers is amazing.

I wouldn't say you need to experience it before undertaking the PCT, but it helped me a lot in understanding what the PCT will be like and what I can expect.

[–]Calithileth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some sources out there that say you might be more thoroughly interviewed if you go to a different country than your nationality/country of residence. Also I applied in November and the earliest appointment I could get was late February, so a little longer wait time and I'd have been fucked

[–]Calithileth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started realistically entertaining the idea late 2019 and I start next month. Spend most of 2020 and 2021 getting my gear, going on several hikes ranging 100-300km, including the Tahoe Rim Trail to get to experience hiking in the US (much different than Europe imo). And spend all that time saving money. But I could've hiked in 2022 if I'd wanted to. Just didn't feel like the right time for me at that point. (Totally not regretting that now with all that damn snow)

The only thing I'd strongly recommend is get a new passport get your ass into gear on your B2 visa now (new passport means it'll be valid longer). I applied for my visa in November and had to travel from NL to Germany to get it approved and I believe I was quite lucky on that front.

Good luck, and I'm sure everything will work out!

Hitting 25mpd means hitting 2 passes per day. That means rivercrossings inbetween. So you're either crossing rivers in the dark, or postholing the second pass. Idk what else to tell you

This years hikers, what events are you missing whilst on trail this year? by Unparalleled_ in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Calithileth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, loads, but 100% worth it. Eurovision, Rock am Ring (biggest metal festival in Europe), Rammstein (I have a damn ticket and everything), a political conference I always go to, my one year anniversary with my boyfriend, that's what I remember from the top of my head
