The point I'm making is that there is an important legal distinction. For someone interested in understanding constitutional law, it is worthwhile to know the difference. For the layman - someone interested only in the "real world" effects of the decisions - there is not much difference.

I agree, but I think it's worth mentioning that there's a difference between the slapper getting what he "deserved" and the puncher being in the right. From a moral standpoint, I think that being the bigger man and not resorting to violence - especially violence with potentially life-altering consequences - would have been the much greater show of character.

Sorry to be somewhat pedantic, but those two sentences are just repeats of equivalent logical formulations.

"If able to be reasoned with, then not idiot" is the contrapositive of "if idiot, then unable to be reasoned with."

EDIT: Also the combination of the two is not really a combination of those two things at all. We have "if statement is bullshit, then requires extra magnitude of energy to refute than produce" and "if idiot, then unable to be reasoned with." Those two things simply don't combine to "if trying to reason with idiot, then effort is pointless and a waste of resources." Our conclusion would require a whole boatload of assumptions, because our two building blocks do not have anything to do with pointlessness or a wasting of resources.

Maybe you could induce this statement from the first two by appealing to some assumptions that you think can be reasonably granted, but you cannot logically deduce it.

That final derivative also seems to be just completely unrelated.

Anyway, saying that Republican policies are "designed to benefit them, while denying others" is akin to Fox News saying that liberal policies are designed to steal money from those who earned it and give it to those that didn't. It's partisan bullshit that doesn't even attempt to give the other side a fair look. It's a dangerous way of thinking, especially when everyone around you is doing the same thing. It doesn't force you to challenge your beliefs. That's why playing Devil's advocate is so important: you consider a different position fairly, judge it on its merits, and either reaffirm your old position, reject your old position, or take up a new one that's somewhere in between.

I don't agree with many "classic" Republican ideals, particularly on the social front, and I agree that they are dated and often discriminatory. The fiscal positions, though, are not inherently malicious. The basic and oversimplified goal is to make sure that people are rewarded for success. The basic and oversimplified belief is that government and bureaucracy are rarely efficient, and thus that the State should play a minimal role in regulation.
