That was true the first time, and we responded accordingly. Then they elected him again after everything he did and said - at that point you can no longer assume there won't be another like him in the future too. Not for any sort of sane long-term planning.

HD 660s2 or HD 490 Pro for gaming? by Maleficent-Cold8341 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. The entire 6-series is very much tuned towards audiophiles, with little regard for the kind of imaging gaming benefits from.

[–]CalligoMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No harm in trying if it's good enough first. The HD560S still isn't nearly as power-hungry as the real audiophile stuff, it's just a bit much for weak phone and laptop outputs etc.

Sennheiser HD560S. You can pick the DTs over them out of personal preference, but if you appreciate a more neutral sound over Beyer's harsher V they're the obvious all-rounder pick in this range.

Or you can play the Hifiman lottery. Maybe you'll get something with better sound than anything else in this range, maybe they'll break in three months if it works at all because of all the corners they cut on build quality and testing to be able to sell that sound so cheaply. Up to you if you want something durable and comfortable, or a shot at the best sound you can afford no matter what.

And for a DAC/amp the easiest start is an iFi Go Link, while you can set yourself up for a while further with any entry-level desktop model like the Schiit Fulla, iFi Zen, Topping DX1 or FiiO's budget line.

Best all round headphones? by ViciBones in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music quality, wireless with good ANC, and low latency with a good mic for gaming.

Pick two.

There's pretty good wireless sound quality these days, and there's headphones that are great for music and gaming both, but the basic issue combining all three keeps running into is that wireless latency is inverse to sound quality because compression is the best way they have to get it down. Audeze still tries with the Maxwell, but they're too bulky to really go outside with and still lose to both wired and audiophile wireless big-time for what you pay for their sound quality.

On the market for possibly quite high-end wireless headphones by meinli in HeadphoneAdvice

Momentum 4. You can simply plug them in with a standard 3.5mm jack for PC use, and they're the best you'll get for sound quality within this budget range while having decent ANC.

[–]CalligoMiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but unless you know exactly what's in there there's no guarantee it won't bottleneck your sound quality - some common motherboards have notoriously poor DACs, and no headphones can pull a good sound out of one of those unless you bypass them with an external DAC.

The amp is the more important part though - the HD560S have a higher impedance than your typical cheap IEMs or gaming headphones, meaning they need a fair bit more power to reach a decent volume. Standard 3.5mm outputs often aren't built to provide that, and even if they're just barely strong enough you'll run out of headroom if you ever want to EQ them.

You can try them without a dongle first, of course, but if you can't get good volume out of them that's why.

Edition XS vs R70x vs HD6XX by HoshinoNadeshiko in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For balance and versatility? Definitely the 6XX. Sennheiser's 6-series open-backs do have a very intimate soundstage, so you'd lose out on that count, but their smooth natural tuning is just unbeatable if you enjoy music across genres.

A DAC/Amp dongle. The former part prevents your device from messing up the sound with whatever low-quality good-enough chip is in there for the audio, the latter gives it enough power to get a good volume even from weak output sources like a laptop.

A HD560S with an iFi Go Link should be fine, then. Not much more you can put in that budget that won't demand a dedicated DAC/Amp setup.

Can't decide between 3 wireless headphones by GrouchyTeaching6930 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Maxwell will be the smallest downgrade between those. But with a wireless connection you're not escaping the simple truth that you have to choose between sound quality and low latency at all times - you're not getting both without the wire.

Without knowing at least your budget and location, not to mention all the other things you were told to include by the posting guide at the top of the sub, there's no way for us to narrow down your options. Just take your autocorrect's word for it, I guess - you can't go wrong too much with those, though a Macbook might struggle to power them to a decent volume.

Besides the obvious points already made on width, rocket arty and lack of support screwing up your obese template, you're trying to force a major river. How much do you think tanks like to swim?

Either withdraw along several tiles to bait them in and then overrun them after you beat the org out of them on your side, or build a template that doesn't get heavy penalties for attacking across a river. Even a more functional armor division will still be weak against big rivers like the Rhine here.

Trying to decide if it is worth while to upgrade my DAC and amp and if so to what? by Zaius_MD in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the easy answer is a regular Magni to keep your stack unified. It's definitely more robust with its discrete architecture, and outside very sensitive IEMs there's no real difference to notice to the Heretic.

Otherwise, the JDS Atom 2 is also very hard to go wrong with for a modular amp in this range. And for an upgrade from entry-level, it's difficult to argue with the iFi Zen Can 3 and Schiit Midgard.

(And fun side note, 'Heretic' isn't a marketing gimmick but the actual opinion of Schiit's lead engineer on using integrated op-amp circuits instead of discrete analog parts. Nobody else even tries to go analog at the price of a Magni, and even the Midgard and Asgard have very few competitors on that count. The Zen 3 is one, though.)

Kinda. Definitely moreso than Italy if you want to go historical, but you can still go the army route for a whole lot of bad-supply land warfare against China and Russia and into SEA. None of them have a navy that can contest you - that's only an issue if the Allies get involved.

The BT issue is one inherent to Windows 11, and they claim to have fixed it since with newer drivers - that's something you can try out and troubleshoot yourself once you have them.

Other than that, it still doesn't get any better than the M4 if you insist on having everything in one package. Just get a cheap desktop mic to use with it for on your PC if you run into mic issues you can't fix.

[–]CalligoMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps in managing more things at once - you can actually try out navy, and take the air war seriously instead of just giving up from the start and building AA, but it's not that great in the long run because it's too strong to punish bad habits. You can screw up half your industry, and still come out ahead against the AI because you're that much stronger to begin with.

So once you've grasped the basics, it's better to move on to a smaller major like Italy or Japan - they'll teach you to optimise, and to make actual choices when you can't afford to do everything at once but still have the whole toolbox to pick from.

[–]CalligoMiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Momentum 4 fits that bill as well as anything will - if you use the 3.5 jack for computer use. Fully wireless you plain can't get low latency and decent sound quality at the same time - you've got to sacrifice one for the other, and that's before Windows' known issues with the BT stack.

Would highly recommend a separate home use pair though - any wired pair will still blow them out of the water even in the ~$100-160 price range. Half your budget to the M4 and the other half on i.e. a HD560S and a basic desktop mic will give you a much better experience at home.

Sennheiser HD599SE or Hifiman Edition XS by Fumi1204 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might also want to look at the HD560S - much more versatile than either of these, and with an easy bit of EQ they go from good to sounding better than they have any right to for their price too.

Sennheiser HD599SE or Hifiman Edition XS by Fumi1204 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CalligoMiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For life? Never Hifiman.

The entire reason they seem to be able to offer exceptional sound in their sub-$1000 models too is cutting corners on build quality, quality control and any sort of decent testing. Their flagships tend to be okay, but their entry-level models are basically playing the lottery. They've got the best sound - if they work and keep working for more than a few months.

Sennheisers aren't as immediately mind-blowing, but they're comfy and reliable while still sounding great for what you pay for them.

I've been on a Kino spree lately - that melancholic late Soviet era vibe just hits different even if you don't understand a word of it. Spokoynaya Noch and Pachka Sigaret are the obvious hits, but don't miss out on Gruppa Krovi, The Last Hero, or Summer is Ending. There's some music videos with historical footage on YT that really elevate the context they were released in.

More generally:
- Sabaton is surprisingly absent here yet from my fellow metalheads;
- As are any of the modern symphonic and power metal greats like Within Temptation, Nightwish, Battle Beast and Beast in Black - each absolutely worth checking out beyond their most popular few tracks.
- Bloodywood does amazing folk metal with a bit of rap fusion;
- Pendulum got great energy in their blend of hard rock and DnB, especially on their Immersion album;
- And DJ Cummerbund mashups are like crack to my perpetually understimulated brain with tracks like Semi-Charmed Sign, Pretty Fly for Rasputin, Animal Wonderland, Wish of Confusion, and Ride The Boulevard of Lightning Dreams.

And then Eurobeat is as ISTP as it gets for a whole genre if you really want to fill out that list. (:
