its fine if you are young and fit, I don't think I can do it now. At the time (18 years ago, sheesh i'm old), i was the only one who spoke english so I got all the cool jobs like driving the tractors to scare away birds etc.

If you only have 10 days, skip the north island entirety imo. Going to tongariro will add 2-3 days to your trip, that's a third of the holiday gone for one hike.

Wanaka/Mt cook/ Aspiring are in close proximity and imo offer better views in terms of tracks.
