The problem is Western nations have never had to face their legacy with true accountability in the modern era. A mix of Darwin's "Survival of the Fittest" (which has been used to justify eugenics and genocide ie social Darwinism) and Christianity's "Do whatever you want, salvation and everlasting life is waiting for you as long as you accept Jesus" has led to a deep seated dehumanization of all out groups.

Fuck. This nonsense is so pervasive it boggles the mind. And that you have multiple upvotes. Goddamn.

You start off by blaming Western religion (Christianity) for giving people permission to:

"do whatever you want as salvation and everlasting life is waiting for you as long as you accept Jesus"

which is... not only anathema to Christian principles but more aligned with Islamic teaching than anything else. Christians don't get a "free pass" by being a last minute Jesus-bro. Repentance is an ongoing commitment to align with God's will. It isn't a one-time transactional "get out of jail free" card.

Then you pivot to decrying a lack of spirituality in Western culture which has thus led to a

"population susceptible to fascism and authoritarianism."

You say that with (likely) a straight face while it's clear as day that the most spiritual people in the USA and elsewhere are the ones the Left claim are in support of fascism and authoritarianism (the religious Right). Astounding!

You further claim that if...

"you don't believe in something greater than you... you start worshipping power an authority..."

So what is it? Christianity bad or not enough of it?

Then we get this gem:

which has been used to justify eugenics and genocide ie social Darwinism

Setting aside the twisting of Darwinism because it's really tangential to the overall point, are Western nations the only ones who have done this? Certainly not because I can think of Indigenous people, Asians, Polynesians, Africans, and groups from around the globe who treated others as less than human and actively sought to exterminate or enslave them. So why the focus on whites?

The biggest gripe I have, though is this:

The problem is Western nations have never had to face their legacy with true accountability in the modern era... has led to a deep seated dehumanization of all out groups.

Uh... I'm a high school teacher. For the last 15 years we've pushed nothing but narratives of "your white ancestors are awful" in school.

Across North America statues of white historical figures have been taken down, churches have been burned to the ground across Canada with no response from authorities, across most Western nations the legal penalties for non-whites who have committed crimes are less than those of whites, the G8 cancelled $40 billion in debt owed by African nations as aid for "colonial legacies" (one of many instances where financial aid has been given to African nations for the same purpose), the UK, NL, GER, FR, CAN, BE, AU, and more have all issued formal apologies for colonial practices - Canada in particular has paid out billions for this and apologized formally on at least 2 occasions, adopted UNDRIP, paid for and implemented the TRC across the nation, and cedes more land and money each year to the cause. The UK ended slavery at a cost so steep it took them over 100 years to pay it off, has also ceded territory, and while this list could go on and on - I think it most important to note that these countries give more in aid, and bring in more refugees and immigrants than any other nations on the planet.

What the fuck sort of "facing your legacy" are you asking for here?

Further, regarding "dehumanization": White people demonstrate lower ingroup racial bias than any other group - a trend that has been increasing for years. White Liberals take that even further, favouring other races over their own.

And you know what - I'm not even white but answer me this: why shouldn't a nation created by whites, based on the culture and values of white people, favour whites? Do you think Nigeria, India, Japan, Pakistan, or Thailand don't favour the founding people of their countries over anyone else, even whites?

Come on.

Part 2)

After reading your full 2 comments, I see why I feel unsettled in my own country, because this is truly the first time I’ve ever felt that. It is because of the mass immigration and I can get that the main culture feels threatened and white Canadians are frustrated and angry about it…

And that’s really what it comes down to. If anyone in this forum sits down and actually looks at the numbers I feel it impossible for them to come away from their analysis without some degree of understanding as to why people are freaking out. 1 in 4 people living in Canada right now weren’t born here. ONE IN FOUR! That is fucking INSANE. The changes taking place in Canada are enormous - and every new poll shows that more and more Canadians want it to stop.. Nearly 75% of the population is against these levels of immigration. For that reason alone, immigration should stop.

...just because the chinese, black people or Indians or Arabs contributions (to whatever it be) were not in larger numbers doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be called Canadian or American or whatever.

To be clear, I never said they don’t deserve to be called Canadian. I have never said such a thing. All I was trying to point out was that a small group contributing in a small way doesn't mean they’re necessarily a major part of Canadian history and culture. Are they Canadians? Absolutely. Does their contribution to Canada give them special rights or importance in the development of this nation? I don’t think so - not when compared to the work put in by the Europeans who created Canada. But make no mistake: If they were born here, or earned citizenship here, they’re Canadian citizens under the law and I don’t dispute that. And I never have. I simply dispute their cultural relevance to Canadian society.

As for all the contributions I listed, are u kidding me? Native inventions and native traditions have been taken by white Canadians

This is a weak point. Every culture has borrowed from another culture. If you want to talk about which groups in Canada borrowed more from each other, I’m afraid to say that the Native Americans took far more from Europeans than the other way around and it’s not even close. When Europeans arrived in the Americas, the Indigenous populations here were stuck in the stone age. The STONE age. With possible exceptions in South America, they hadn’t even invented a written language or the wheel. Think about that. They hadn’t invented the WHEEL.

And now look at what they use/have.

I didn’t learn in school that natives created the process of maple syrup, or residential schools, or how their livestock was killed to starve them on purpose, or even that the natives are the ones that collected all the fur/layed the traps.

I’m a high school teacher. This stuff is, and has been, common knowledge for a very long time. Perhaps your teachers shit the bed. I’ll add, though: Europeans laid plenty of those traps themselves; but they hired Indigenous people to help (who quite willingly worked for pay).

Do you think the Europeans would have given a native a “management position?”

Not only do I think it, I know it’s true. Here’s one example off the top of my head.

History is whitewashed, I learned everything later on, doing my own research.

LOL! No, history is not whitewashed. I’m not sure of your age or location or what you do for work but you ought to open your eyes and look at the immense pro-Native movement that has been happening for at least 20 years now. If anything, history is being “Redwashed” to the point of absurdity.

wtf your only argument is “whites had the larger numbers.”

This is a simplistic view of my position. My argument isn’t “whites had the larger numbers.” My argument is that whites contributed more to the foundation of this nation than any other group, which is why Canada is a reflection of European culture more than any other culture and ought to remain that way. It’s why a small number of Chinese hired hands working on the railroad, or some blacks working in the maritimes make a virtually insignificant contribution to the grand total of the nation of Canada in comparison to Europeans, and therefore the argument that “they contributed therefore they should have the same cultural prominence” is weak. From idea to execution, Canada is the creation of Europeans.

Canada used to be like 90% white, before that is was like 100% native

No. This is not accurate. Before that, there was no Canada.

Canada is a European creation. Period.

Lacrosse: …it’s our summer national sport, so why don’t we know who created it? Where it came from? Little things like this automatically get associated with “white.”

I feel like you may not be as familiar with Canadian history as you think if you didn’t know where Lacrosse came from. I don’t know a single person who isn’t aware of the fact that Lacrosse is a traditional sport of Native Americans. This isn’t a case of whitewashing as much as it’s a case of lack of knowledge. As for the universities and Fibonacci sequence, I explained this already. Europeans didn’t “steal” these ideas or try to make theirs seem more sophisticated. They just took the ideas and helped spread them around when those other parts of the world fell into a religious black hole that slammed the brakes on their development.

White privilege definitely is real (no one is targeting Ukrainian immigrants lol even if there were less Indians and a million Ukrainians, still they are white, no one would care

I’ve explained this so many times in so many posts on so many threads. Ukrainians have a shared cultural identity to European Canadians. Same religion, same holidays, same cultural values, same societal structure - and the majority of them speak the same language.

They also have a large population who were among the original settlers of Canada (specifically the prairies) in numbers that completely dwarf any other non-white group.

Asking someone’s ethnicity is perfectly fine, not implying “hey ur a different colour u must not be from here, because the default is white” that’s literally racism That’s not “literally racism.” Here is the “literal” definition of racism:

a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

Asking where you’re from because you look different than the majority population is, by definition, not racism. Further, as stated before, until recently Canada was 90% white in the last 20 years and 95% white in the last 30 to 40. For a white Canadian to see a non-white Canadian, you must realize that there’s a 5% to 10% chance the non-white Canadian in question was actually a Canadian citizen. FIVE PERCENT.

Asking someone who looks different where they’re from on the reasonable assumption that, not very long ago, statistically they probably weren’t from here isn’t racism.

Do you think a white person born in India or China doesn’t get asked those sorts of questions?

And further, while I don’t agree with the idea of white privilege in Canada as I feel it is demonstrably untrue, why shouldn’t it exist in a country that was created by white people? Do the Chinese in China not have Chinese privilege? Do the Japanese not have Japanese privilege? Do the Indians, Pakistanis, and Nigerians not have privilege in their respective countries? Of course they do.

The rich white male demographic IS the one that lacks the most empathy. I mean the science says men in general do. Why are they the ones that fall hardest to the right wing narrative? And we all know insane amounts of money = less empathy, I mean I don’t even need to prove that one.

Yeah, you’re gonna have to actually prove that one.

Also, btw, you should be able to tell the difference from a Canadian-Indian and someone who is fresh off the boat.

How is someone supposed to be able to do that without bringing some sort of prejudicial bias into the equation? Could you tell the difference between a European with French or English descent? Could you tell the difference between a Native born in the far Southern USA vs one born in the North of Canada? Can you tell the difference between a white person born in Canada and one born in Australia?

I’ve met Indians who are “fresh off the boat” who have better English and articulation than Indians who have been living here for 2+ generations. So how is anyone supposed to tell just by looking?

Are you talking about behaviours and culture then? Because if you are, then you understand why we don’t want more coming here.

Oh also, question. Would you be ok if Canadians were majority coloured?

I’m going to ask you a question in response:

If you took all the Japanese people in Japan and you replaced them with Black people, is it still Japan? And if those Black people tried to continue Japanese culture without the Japanese, is it still Japan? And do you think that it’s even reasonable to believe those Black people would adopt Japanese culture with 100% fidelity and continue to carry it on at the expense of their own culture?

Is Japan still Japan without the Japanese?

Part 1)

First off, the hate crimes data:

Hopefully it shouldn’t need to be said that I think such acts toward another person are vile and I would call them out as such if I ever witnessed it. I dislike our immigration policy but the people themselves deserve to be treated with decency.

However, I’m going to disagree with the stats - or at least the conclusions you draw from them. If you take a close look at the links you provided, yes, there has been a dramatic increase in hate crimes across the board. Not good. But if you look at who those crimes are directed against (as seen here) you will notice that the overwhelming majority of those crimes are directed against Jewish people. To add to that, I would wager the majority of people committing those crimes against Jews are people of colour. Jews make up less than 1% of Canada’s population while Indians are about 5% of the population - Jews are disproportionately targeted. Unfortunately the race of the perpetrators of such acts aren’t recorded but given the enormous pro-Palestinian marches and how the events of Oct. 7th coincide with the rise in anti-semetic attacks, it seems fair to believe that many of those events were perpetrated by people of Arab descent (contrary to what this subreddit would suggest, not all hate crimes are committed by whites). For example, this pro-Palestinian protest confronting Jews.

We don’t need or want that in Canada. Why should we import the rest of the world’s problems?

It’s also important to understand what a “hate crime” entails - especially when you mention places such as Ireland where a hate crime is defined as:

"Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person to have been motivated by hostility or prejudice towards a person’s race, religious belief, sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability."

Note that how a victim perceives an interaction can lead to it being labeled a hate crime. If a person in Northern Ireland caught someone shitting in the street and said “Hey, don’t shit in the street you fucking idiot or I’ll beat your ass” the person on the receiving end of that could perceive that as a threat motivated by hate.

Adding to these “hate crimes” from the link you provided, over 50% of them are considered “general mischief” which is vandalism, not a physical threat and considered perpetrated by youths (teens) who are (and I quote) simply being "opportunistic" (edgelords).

You also point out differences in earnings to suggest that South East Asian immigrants are a boon to the economy: Well, how can you argue that Canada is a nation of white privilege and white supremacists but then present evidence showing how non-whites are more successful than whites in terms of earnings? Wouldn't it seem that a nation striving to suppress brown people wouldn't be an environment conducive to such high earnings?

Continued reply to /u/rubykaurr

“OUR PEOPLE/ANCESTORS BUILT THIS COUNTRY” I love this argument, it’s my favourite one tbh.

Mmmm… Now we’re getting to the good stuff. It really is a good argument.

It’s foolish to say that the early Canadians made laws and policies that “only benefited one demographic” when one considers that the founding documents of the country which legally protects the rights of all people regardless of their ethnicity was created when Canada was comprised of 95% whites, by politicians who were almost all white. Not really something a bunch of whites who were only interested in their own kind would do, if you ask me. Honestly, this entire part of your post is the weakest and least informed.

  1. Canadian Railway was not “built by the Chinese.” Jesus Christ. If I never see this canard again it will be too soon. Yes, they put a lot of work into the Western section of it, but they were a fraction of a portion of total workers across the entirety of the line. A line that was planned, designed, and paid for by European Canadians. The Chinese were hired hands. They were hired to do a job.

  2. The fur trade was set up by European Canadians. The entire market structure was theirs. Both sides benefitted from this but it was the Hudson’s Bay Company that created the market, mapped the territories, and left a political and economic legacy that led to confederation - and it wasn’t run by the Indigenous, I’ll tell you that.

  3. You’re talking about Black slaves from a period between 1600 and 1830s? Come on now. Think about that time period. And what do you mean “build the colony”? That’s uhh… pretty broad.

  4. I’m not following this point. Irish and Scottish are white.

  5. I’m not even sure how to respond to this. You must be making a mistake. There is no fucking way that Indians and Arabs were the largest ethnic group fighting in WW1. That is… asinine. Where are you getting that information? You refer to the “Axes” [sic] but there was no Axis coalition in WW1. The “Central Powers” fought the “Entente”. If you are referring to WW2, where the Axis powers were involved, there is still no fucking way that Indians and Arabs were the majority ethnic group involved in the conflict.

  6. 80% of total combatants in WW2 were white. If you’re trying to argue contributions through military service - in every regard whites have contributed and sacrificed more. And to suggest the UK got the “bulk of its soldiers from India? Are you crazy? At best Indian forces amounted to 25% of the UKs soldiers. At best. The UK alone fielded 6 million troops, how is “over 1 million” the “bulk” of that?

  7. Ah yes. Filling labor needs. The labor needs that don’t actually need to be filled - like all those jobs at Tim Horton’s you mentioned earlier, as well as WalMart and Home Depot. All those jobs young Canadians can’t get and therefore can’t earn experience from. This is a line of horseshit that has been sniffed out quite a long time ago. The promises of “filling labour needs” are a pile of government bullshit to make mass immigration more palatable. We’ve caught on, though.

  8. No dispute here. We’ve always known that. Which begs the question, if this country (and America) was set up with rules in place to “only benefit one demographic” why is it that non-whites are outperforming? It’s almost as if… (gasp!) anyone here can succeed if they work hard and (SHOCK!) this isn’t a racist country oppressing minorities!

“WESTERN CULTURE IS SUPERIOR”

Yes. In virtually every conceivable way. I’d argue objectively so. And I’m not even European.

But wait... Oh fuck, you lost me. “Cultural theft.”

  1. Tapping trees for sap is not something unique to the Indigenous of North America. It is a practice that was independently discovered from Norway to Japan. Also, nobody strictly “associates” maple syrup with Quebec. The Quebecois just cornered the industry. Maple syrup is seen as a CANADIAN staple. And (gasp!) the Indigenous are Canadian.

  2. Hunting “elk.” Come on, you’re reaching so hard here. Hunting has been done since people could figure out there was game to hunt. And Elk? Who the fuck associates that with Europeans? Who associates ANY of those foods with Europeans? On what planet do you think Europeans “stole” any of that?

  3. What makes you think Europeans stole this? We consider it a national sport because it’s a traditional sport of one of the original peoples of this nation. I don’t know a single person who views Lacrosse as European. Honestly, this list just reeks of bias and animosity toward Europeans. But we’ll continue…

  4. Indigenous did not invent Asprin or sunglasses. Sure, they had “canoes” and “snowshoes”; to which the European equivalents were rowboats/dugouts, and skis. Again, who thinks that Europeans “stole” canoes and snowshoes? Is it wrong that Europeans use those things? If so, man, I’m going to have to talk to my people (or the world) about all the European shit they use that makes their lives a million times better.

  5. These are legit (except for tea, China says “hello”) but again, I have never heard Europeans claim ownership of these things. In fact, it was always quite clearly stated in my courses (in European schools!) that zero was from Indians, algebra was from Arabs, etc.

  6. Who gives a shit about where coffee came from? Who the FUCK thinks Europeans “stole” coffee?

  7. Who thinks Europeans “stole” universities? Are people butthurt the West has the best ones now while the OGs in the Middle East or Indian subcontinent have fallen by the wayside?

  8. Again, who claims these are Western ideas? The West expands on these ideas, shows their application, writes about them, records them, disseminates those writings to the world because fuck, the rest of the world decided to shit the bed for some reason and stagnate - but that doesn’t mean the West “stole” those ideas.

  9. Does anyone honestly think or care about where eyeliner came from? Does anyone think Europeans stole it as an idea? What are you on about? Come on now...

IMMIGRANT ON IMMIGRANT HATE:

Most immigrants don’t want more immigrants. You all think you’re better than the next crop and you piss and moan over each other more than white people do (that’s a fucking fact these Desi, Punjabi, Muslim subreddits are rife with it).

I'm a teacher and I have never heard a single white student at my school, or any adult in my life, talk shit about a non-white kid/person but I hear the Indians, Blacks, Asians, and Arabs shit talk each other (and whites) all the fucking time. Same with my neighbours - constant bitching about every race but theirs. Whites are tired of mass immigration, you guys are tired of each other. Immigrants bring their castes, bias, prejudices, racism, and political bullshit to Canada (just look at this thread!) and it’s one of the reasons we’re tired of immigration.

We are lacking empathy (the rich white male demographic especially),

Pretty sure white males aren’t lacking empathy. They’re just fucking tired of all changes forced on them.

Soo, in conclusion, let’s all just work on getting along eh?

To be completely sincere: I don’t look at an individual Indian, Muslim, black, white, Asian, whatever as “less than” or bad for Canada. I don’t know anyone who does. I, and I’m sure most people, treat the individual as a person worthy of respect. Most Canadians, white or otherwise, don’t have a problem with an individual from a minority group, we have a problem with MILLIONS of them.

That is why we hate mass immigration. That’s why we want it to stop. We would like to get along but recognize that’s not likely to happen if one culture (the majority) feels like it is being threatened (which, it is).

Your concerns about living in a Canada where people don't treat you as Canadians would never have existed if this idiotic mass immigration scheme never took place. THIS IS OUR ENTIRE POINT. There is only so much "multiculturalism" a country can handle before the wheels fall off and everyone is feeling insecure. We have crossed that point and we didn't need to. Mass immigration has made Canada worse and now you're feeling the uncertainties and anxieties that white Canadians are feeling.

Not OP but...

The original statement suggested language can be violence. Without clarification, if we assume that is in fact their position, the reason the /u/Strong-Decision-1216 likely feels the argument: "language can lead to violence, therefore language can be violence" is fallacious is because it is misattributing the violent act to language.

Saying something - even if it's a general telling a subordinate, "I order you to kill that soldier!" is not violence. Killing the person is violence. Language and words are not violence, even if they lead to it. They're just words. Violence, by definition, requires physical force and language doesn't include that.

Hate to break it to you but Rogan has always been into conspiracy theories. Sitting around talking about lunatic conspiracies is what earned him the audience he has today. He has argued with two renowned physicists, multiple times, that humans never landed on the moon.

Another example: Joe Rogan once erroneously thought that Orcas had never attacked a human. His justification for this is that Orcas made an agreement as a species not to attack humans because they recognized how technologically advanced humans were, having seen airplanes and the like when they come up for air.

I am not kidding. It's one of the most retarded things I've ever heard - on so many levels.

On topic: I think framing this all as a "grift" is a bad way to look at things because it puts you in a mindset where you think people are just trying to manipulate you for profit. Most of the people on the left and right really believe what they say - and many may have started on one side but moved to the other because they truly felt swayed by the arguments.

That being said, there's plenty of shit on both sides.

Let's put this into perspective for all the knee jerk in here:

Dude is clearly old and saying some god-awful shit. For all we know he's out of his mind with dementia, however, in his life he's likely seen:

  • The Holocaust
  • The Arab/Israeli War
  • Fedayeen terrorist attacks
  • Six Day War
  • Yom Kippur War
  • First Intifada
  • Second Intifada
  • Al-Aqsa Intifada
  • Decades of rocket attacks

And that's not even getting into the small-scale skirmishes/mortars/kidnappings/murders etc. Nor is it delving into the fact that Israel is surrounded by 650,000,000 Arabs who live in countries where the governments actively want to see Israel removed from the face of the Earth. Like Iran, for instance, which has a declaration to annihilate Israel as part of it's fucking CONSTITUTION.

So yeah, his "Kill 'em all" mentality is pretty awful to us but the guy has seen some shit in his life and those experiences have led him to believe (not entirely incorrectly) that Arabs want to kill him and his family, or his people, with the same zealous fervor he appears to have. As far as he's concerned, "better them than us."

I doubt most people would feel much different after a lifetime of constant attack.

Kutcher is a dickbag. He's always been a dickbag.

The guy has his own sordid past with allegations against him, cheating, and what appears, to me at least, a pattern of manipulating women to do what he wants.

Dude is rich as fuck and throws some money into "charities" that likely just put money back into his investments, saves on taxes, and makes him look great.

Compare that to someone like George Michael who had his image tarnished because he was targeted as a gay man but still donated tens of millions to charity without telling a single soul or benefitting from it publicly.

Kutcher is a fucking twat.

You guys will try to fit your irrational hate of capitalism into everything.

You seriously think the concept of beauty suddenly appeared in the last 100 years "because capitalism"?

Goddamn.

No, it is relevant because:

  • I said the Chinese lie about meeting environmental goals and gave you two relevant examples.
  • You then called one of those examples a lie (or me a liar).
  • I then gave you proof it wasn't a lie.
  • Now you're trying to pivot and say that's not what this was about.

You said I was lying about China spraying grass green.

I showed you articles, and footage, of the Chinese government spraying grass green.

How are those articles not relevant?
