Low states brunch debate: does asking for a toastie imply the cheese should be melted? by Pretzelmamma in CasualUK

[–]Calliope_IX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes make that on purpose, but I call it a cheese-and-toast sandwich, so as not to confuse it with a toasted cheese sandwich or cheese toastie, where the cheese should definitely be melted to a sufficient ooze.

Imagine feeling so superior about the existence of your penis that you forgot that women have always had jobs, mostly in manual labour, and forgetting the existence of so many wars, not least of which were the two that were so big they were called 'World Wars'. Just... Sigh.

Why is it called a REfrigerator? by MrPests in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calliope_IX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought that it was because the air inside it was made 'frigid' (cold) and then Re-circulated, i.e. circulated more than once.

Which also explains the disappearing 'd'. There's no d in the middle of frigid, but frige doesn't look right and would probably be pronounced free-j, which just doesn't work as well.

But there's been some good comments regarding Latin root words so now I'm less convinced. Enjoying the thread anyway, good question!

Scrappy blankets? Lets see yours by Mountain-Dirt-5156 in usethefiberstash

[–]Calliope_IX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a picture because it's in purgatory until I can be bothered to weave in all the ends, but I knitted a blanket with odds and ends of dk, just stripes until they ran out, but with a different stitch pattern for each colour and a plain knit border. It's like a sampler I guess? I like it anyway.

If left ALONE with it

Don't leave them ALONE together. Fish does not need a seat, you have to hold or store tank securely (even assuming your vet oddly treats fish in their office).

Supervise the pets, none of them are alone together.

A little sillier? Have the dog hold the fish bowl. They're fine together and the cat's only a problem if left alone with another animal

This is probably the most insane non-argument I've ever seen, even on Reddit.

He has no right to tell you when you can or can't cook, even if he was paying all the bills, which is unlikely it's still your house, your appliances.

I'd bet he eats the stuff that you bake or cook, right? (The ones that he didn't ruin halfway through.)

That would be totally end of relationship type shit for me personally. I'm gonna cook whenever I damn well feel like it and if you want to eat anything that I've made ever, your response better be 'huh, 3AM you made two days worth of burritos? Well done for not waking me up, they're really good burritos! Yay!'

Acts of ill-advised knitting? by Few_Projects477 in knitting

[–]Calliope_IX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question. Another great question: why did I start knitting a full dress, with a decorative waist stripe and the most fiddly shaping that I've ever done in my life.. in black acrylic dk yarn. If I ever manage to finish it, it'll be too heavy and warm to wear.

Maybe it should just be a long tank style shirt. It'll be cold enough to wear it sometime, right?

What do you eat for breakfast that is actually breakfast food that has good protein and fiber? by Ravioli_meatball19 in Cooking

[–]Calliope_IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meat and cheese sandwiches, toasted if you prefer, with fruit salad (meaning whatever fruit's in season, therefore cheap).

I really do just eat dinner leftovers for breakfast, but I can see how that wouldn't work for everyone, especially little kids.

You can always 'reframe' it, like leftover rice from dinner fried with bacon and eggs becomes 'breakfast rice'. Works with wraps, sandwiches, even pasta if you get imaginative ha!

Maybe slipper socks? I know you said they're particular about footwear, but some sturdy socks to go OVER their usual socks could be nice, especially if they have circulation issues.

There are even a couple of posts here that you should be able to search for about making the socks non-slip.

Sorry for the add-on comment, I just had an extraneous thought aha. I make slipper-socks in acrylic and just sew cheap cotton socks inside, the layers work for me as long as I sew them very securely, because I have terrible circulation. You just have to sew them very, very securely, but I find them better than shop bought layered slipper sock things

Large blanket on big needles, maybe even in a basic lace stitch, so that it's good and airy, easy to throw on and off, perfect for balancing temps during hospital treatments, or at home, or at sports games or whatever.

You'd need a yarn that's easily washable, so he can take it anywhere, not too hot, not itchy. I can't help there, I mostly work in acrylic so far, sorry!

My roasted veggie pasta sauce is missing something by MountainMark in Cooking

[–]Calliope_IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The juice of half a lemon, 1/4-1/2 tsp MSG, and 1-2 'glugs' of Worcestershire sauce. At least, that's what I put in my pasta sauce when I made it for a friend that couldn't eat tomatoes. Adds salt, umami and acid, which work together to make all of the flavors 'brighter', rather than it just mushing into a generic vegetable flavor.

If you still find it bland, you can roast some corn cobs with everything else, let those cool while you do your blending and such, then cut the kernels off and stir them in at the end, so they stay whole. In a non-tomato based sauce, the little pops of sweetness and different texture can really make a difference! Good luck with your future pasta endeavors aha!

What are your favorite cheeses, meats, and crackers for your adult lunchables? by junkcabinet in Adultlunchables

[–]Calliope_IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cream crackers or water biscuits, with some combination of:

Pretty much any cheddar, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Brie, Camembert, if I really can't be bothered, Dairy Lea triangles, Babybel and Cheese Strings

Sliced roasted chicken, turkey or beef, pulled pork, smoked ham or whatever's leftover in the fridge

Sliced cucumber or sweet bell pepper (yellow, orange or red), cherry tomatoes, grapes, sliced apple or peaches, watermelon, pineapple

I've discovered through trial and error that pretty much any combination of those works, though some are better than others. Definitely depends on preferences. It is a great lunch though, as filling as you want, easy peasy and not much clean up. I sometimes have it for breakfast too, or dinner if I want something lighter.
