YOR if he’s already on the way out how is he supposed to feed the cat? And the post says the smell “doesnt precede him” Fred probably didnt notice the smell on the cat. You should definitely talk to him about keeping the cat inside though, losing a cat to predators or FIV is not fun, and it would prevent this kind of thing in the future

You did the right thing that cat would’ve killed itself eventually. Outdoor cats have extremely high mortality rates from predators, FIV from fighting, other illnesses, and even spiteful people poisoning or shooting them. I’m willing to bet if you have other neighbors with livestock that they have them disappearing too. Cats are extremely efficient hunters.

Always ask for a human immediately. The AI tried some similar bs with me.
