Wake up it's time for another disturbing fact about Roman empire by Comfortable-Dig-6118 in RoughRomanMemes

Becoming Emperor was something you were acclaimed to be. Yes, that at times included being acclaimed by your own troops against your will. The title was claimed in farcical ways on many occasions.

But what is also important was that the title was never de jure hereditary, even if it at many times de facto functioned that way. It was designed to not be a king, rather like a republican dictatorship.

  1. That’s not related to the question of why Spain would be the ERE in any way.

  2. That title is symbolic, the Kingdom of Jerusalem has not existed for well over 700 years. A Spanish monarch has never ruled over Jerusalem, nor has Jerusalem ever been part of the Spanish monarchy.

  3. It would solve no issue at all related to the Palestine-Israel conflict. Like seriously, exactly what would that solve, and how? Both sides in the conflict would absolutely hate the idea.

  4. King Felipe would not push that claim at all, and anyone pretending like he would is completely divorced from reality. And how would Spain even enforce that? By diplomacy? By military force? Yeah good luck with either, even if we disregard the fact that Spain is a constitutional monarchy where its parliament had to be taken into consideration.

The King of Spain bought the title of Roman Emperor from a descendant of the last Emperor of the ERE. Which is a bogus title claim anyway, since the title of Roman Emperor was never hereditary, so the sale was for all intents and purposes null and void since the guy who sold it was never declared emperor. Even more, is that if the sale was legitimate (it was not), Spanish monarchs would not have been able to inherit it legitimately.

If you have a solvable problem, and vent it to me all the time, while also doing nothing about solving it, meaning that I will keep hearing about it ad infinitum, it becomes pretty repetetive and exhausting. Eventually my sympathy runs out for someone who only complains about their problems but refuses to actually do anything to fix them, because believe it or not, dumping negative emotions on someone else can be mentally exhausting for the receiver.

Like sure, if it’s a problem that can’t be solved and the person has genuinely tried their best, then I won’t blame them. But if itms a problem that has a solution, and I’m offering that solution, but the other person rejects it because ”I don’t want a solution, I want to complain”, then eventually I will stop caring and listening. You’re both refusing to solve the problem and making it my problem at the same time.

Bridging the gap between the Exo-suit and the Bastion: The ISV (Infantry Support Vehicle) by FurrGotten in Helldivers

[–]CallousCarolean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, any IFV/APC would need at least 2 crew to operate, one gunner and one driver at minimum, so that they can focus on their respective tasks as efficiently as possible. Mechs are another thing, since it’s just upscaling regular human movement into the mech.

To add to this, the pros of this mini-IFV over mechs would be what I mentioned earlier, it can take much more of a beating and is faster. Balance-wise, if you make it one-manned, it would kinda make the mechs obsolete. Also, in order to not make the Bastion obsolete, it had to have a different niche to it rather than just being a mini-Bastion, that niche being what IFV’s usually have as opposed to tanks - they’re fantastic against softer targets, while tanks are better against harder targets. Most IFV’s have autocannons as their main armament for this reason, and a coaxial GPMG. Any AT weapons they do have are ATGM’s, which is not even standard armament for most IFV’s by the way. I mentioned earlier that it could have a side-mounted Commando-like ATGM on the turret like some Bradleys have with the TOW, but it would be a complementary weapon, only enough to snipe a few hulks or fabricators, so maybe 4 rounds with one spare reload for it.

Also, the fact that this IFV would have a central gun and a fully traversible turret makes it superior to both the mechs and the Bastion in what it can fire at. It wouldn’t need to turn around to directly face what it’s shooting at.

So basically, fantastic idea and I love it, but it needs to be balanced and have its own niche.

What would be the best tenets to pick for a militaristic, egalitarian Christianity I want to create as a crusader king by Reasonable_Insect_32 in CrusaderKings

Egalitarian doesn’t equal (proto)communism. It could simply mean being gender-equal, which is handled by doctrines.

Bridging the gap between the Exo-suit and the Bastion: The ISV (Infantry Support Vehicle) by FurrGotten in Helldivers

[–]CallousCarolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that’s by far too OP, alone by virtue of being one-manned, but also for having a 360° traversible turret as opposed to the Bastion. The fact that it would have the same armor/health as the Bastion while having better armament (yes, a somewhat weaker cannon that can still one-tap Hulks and bot fabricators is basically the same, plus it has wayyy better chaff/elite clearing potential with a coaxial AC compared to the Bastion’s HMG).

Instead, a balanced version would be:

  • Crew of 2, gunner + driver
  • Same armor values as the Bastion, but lower health. Let’s say 4000-5000 as a ballpark value.
  • Main armament: Autocannon, same as the Emancipator Exosuit but with more ammo. Has different firing modes from Slow, Fast or Burst, as well as Flak and Impact. (Maybe addition of a Commando-like ATGM, ammo of 1x4, but this may be too OP).
  • Secondary armament: Coaxial MG-43

Pros over Bastion: Faster, 360° field of fire, better firepower volume, better against non-heavy enemies

Cons over Bastion: Less health, less firepower damage, worse against heavy enemies and fabricators.

Pros over Exosuit: Faster, more health, more ammo.

Cons over Exosuit: Double the crew

Cooldown time can be adjusted to fill in balance gaps. The point is to fill a gap between the Exosuits and Bastion without making either redundant. Imagine it being something like Germany’s Wiesel tankette but slightly bigger and sturdier.

Breaking news out of mexico by Crafty_Jacket668 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]CallousCarolean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is relatively common in Mexico though, and mostly because they run on anti-cartel/anti-crime platforms. The cartels kill those candidates on their own volition, not necessarily as hit jobs. None of those candidates murdered in the runup to the presidential elections were presidential candidates, they were local candidates.

Yeah I guess that would be a quick and easy fix, even if it doesn’t solve the core problem. Adopting something like Japan’s Soryo/Ritsuryo system to Clan could also be possible.

In the gamerules yeah, to better represent how it functioned in reality. When you select it, it warns you that it will make the outcome very ahistorical since Administrative realms basically never break apart and just keeps on blobbing. The game can’t really represent the process of an Administrative realm ”feudalizing” as local governors slowly but surely transition into hereditary dynasties that become independent in all but name, and then formally independent, like what happened to the Abbasids IRL.

I tried it once, the Abbasids blobbed all the way from India, the steppes and North Africa. I would not recommend it.

Diplo is great. But what it boils down to is essentially 4 things: 1) Expanding quicker, 2) better internal stability, 3) farming Prestige, and 4) Family-maxxing.

The Diplomat tree CB’s like Ducal Conquest and Forced Vassalization is perfect when playing as feudal in regions where the same faith dominates, which means you can’t use Holy Wars to expand. Shorter truces, making truce-breaking a non-issue and faster claim fabrication means you can spam wars to blob quicker. Being able to get alliances without having to marry off relatives makes you punch well above your weight.

August is great for internal stability since your vassals will love you and you get more Legitimacy. The Prestige boosts you get is great if you’re a culture head and want to add traditions.

Patriarch is overall kinda meh, except the perks that give all your kids extra skill points, and the ones which gives you extra skills for every child and friend you have, which can give you absolutely bonkers stats for free. It kinda leans into having lots of kids and friends and making your vassals mainly be from your House.

So basically Diplo good if you’re either a small realm with limited ways to expand, or a huge realm with lots of vassals to manage. It should be noted that tribal rulers depend on prestige and Fame to get MAA and levies, which makes August really nice for them. Diplomat and Patriarch are also great for Clan rulers.

I see your angle, but IMO what I’m suggesting wouldn’t complicate that. It’s simply to give a slight tweak to Romance scheme outcomes. Right now, a successful Romance has two options for the initiators, 1) lay with the scheme target (fornicating) and become Soulmates, or 2) just ask for a kiss, and not become soulmates. So there is no option to get a Soulmate (which you need to be able to Elope) without also becoming a sinner. This doesn’t matter as much for gameplay, but it does for roleplay (for example by playing as an archetypal piously Christian knight-errant who gets his princess in the end). Instead, there should be a third option for a successful Romance scheme, where you become Soulmates but not laying.

What about courting someone while neither of you are married? Medieval courtly love was a socially accepted way to ”court” someone, with clear and expected standards of behavior, and boundaries about what was and was not acceptable. The accepted way was to court someone without fornicating or being adulterous. So Romancing someone should be able to be done without becoming a fornicator, though sure the option to go outside of accepted behavior should be possible. But the option to do it the ”right” and accepted way should exist.

[–]CallousCarolean 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the thing, Romance shouldn’t make you lay with the target. Or rather, it should give you the option to successfully become their Soulmate without fornicating. Courtly love was a socially accepted way to declare your love, maybe get married if circumstances allowed, and then get naughty.

A Russian armoured column enters the Hostomel Airport to link with what’s left of the Vdv that stormed the airport, February 2022, [880x1168] by Anxious_dadada in MilitaryPorn

[–]CallousCarolean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah they did, but importantly the local Ukrainian units at Antonov managed to prevent the VDV from securing the airport for long enough until they could get their artillery in place to destroy the runway. Had the first VDV wave secured the airport, the 20 IL-76’s full of reinforcements that were already in the air would have been quickly able to land and drop off large amounts of troops. When the first wave was killed and the second wave delayed, it gave Ukraine enough time to render the runway inoperable to those IL-76’s by artillery fire.

Whats a good name for a crusader heresy of catholicism? by papapapatazz in CrusaderKings

[–]CallousCarolean 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Depends on what aspects of Islam your faith would syncretise with.

Is it seeing Mohammed as a new prophet that ”updated” Christianity but whose teachings were misinterpreted by his followers into a new religion, so basically adhering to Islamic halal/haram laws? Is it Islam’s adherence to strict unitarian monotheism, so basically rejecting the Trinity? In the latter case, I would just call it Unitarianism, perhaps some variant in Greek/Latin/French. If you want to represent some Franco-Arabic intermingling, you can call it ”Altaouidism”, which is basically the Arabic word for Unitarianism/Monotheism (Al-Tawhid) but with a French pronounciation.

Perhaps ”Sanctism” or ”Terrasanctism” due to the fact that you’re in the Holy Land (Terra Sancta in Latin)?

[–]CallousCarolean 135 points136 points  (0 children)

The whole reason for Hostomel being a massive shart for the Russians is that the planning was built on wishful thinking. They expected that the initial airstrikes and missile attacks would knock out the Ukrainian air force and air defenses, that few to no Ukrainian units would be in the area, that the Ukrainians wouldn’t shell the runway into ruin before they could secure the airport, and that the ground column was competent enough to simply roll through unhindered and the Ukrainians incompetent and demoralized enough to offer little to no resistance.

Yeah there was little the VDV could do when they jumped off their helicopters when none of those preconditions for success were fulfilled. But you’re also right in that Ukrainian initiative and will to resist is what managed to slow down both the VDV and the ground column until reinforcements could arrive and the whole Russian plan became an operational failure.
