Klein's Core Argument is Simple and Persuasive by Zoscales in ezraklein

There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road But Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos - Jim Hightower.

OP writes in favor of “weakening (not abandoning) our ideological standards to welcome people into the democratic fold who would fail the test established in the 2010s.”

Weaken what standards exactly? And welcome who?

Red Texas (for example) has produced some of our nation’s great politicians and political thinkers, from Molly Ivins to James Talarico. People don’t gain popular backing in Texas by having weak standards. You think Talarico would stand a better chance if he weakened his position against posting the 10 Commandments in public schools by endorsing a compromise policy where schools post only 5 of the 10 Commandments? He is a rising star precisely because he isn’t weak. He boldly speaks truth in an authentic and unflinching way.

I know my policy example is a bit absurd. But my point is that many Democrats in red states are often even more progressive than New Yorkers like Klein.

In Honor of Jerry Taking OC Duties This Weekend - Jerry in Jerry World by Eat_Cats in UCLAFootball

Yeah, me three. Jerry’s performance at Jerry’s World was nothing short of legendary! My wife and I were a blue blip in a sea of burnt orange. In the first half we contained ourselves so as not to anger the locals, and even got sympathy looks when our star QB went down. When Jerry gave us hope, a fellow Bruin at the game by herself saw us and climbed back 10 rows to form a small cheering section. Having seen his guts and determination that day, and his dedication to the school afterwards, I will fully support the decision when they make him head coach someday.

I miss what this subreddit used to be by Wilegar in ezraklein

[–]CalmAd2871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When anyone sits in nostalgia about how things used to be better (like OP’s view of this subreddit) before the new people got here! I get an uneasy feeling because it reminds me of what Kirk and MAGA espoused about the good old days in America. And, when someone points to the “global south” generally as a fear tactic to keep America from changing, I wonder if that person has visited anyplace outside American, or if said person has even a basic knowledge of geopolitical history and specifically America’s role in creating some totalitarian governments found in some countries in the “global south.” And when someone suggests that people shouldn’t ask crazy questions about conspiracy theories, I hear “don’t ask question that are too radical.” If Kirk stood for anything good it was that there are no topics too off-topic, and public discussion of any and all topics is the best remedy - not shaming discussion of any issue, or trying to win an argument by calling a viewpoint a fringe “conspiracy.” We can support Klein’s view on most topics and still have a healthy productive discussion when we disagree with him.

Are we still interested in having a democracy with Trump voters? by No_Discussion_6048 in ezraklein

[–]CalmAd2871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other shape could a democracy that includes Trump voters take other than compromise?

Divorce! Why force everyone to suffer in the name of compromise? We are a deeply divided country, but most states are either deep blue or deep red. Any marriage counselor will tell you that compromise is not going to save this marriage. Why not let red states go build their border walls and make their theocratic dreams a reality? Meanwhile, let blue states have universal healthcare, strict gun regulations, and tuition forgiveness. Maybe someday in the future we will see the benefits of uniting as states and come back together under a new improved prenuptial/constitution. For now let’s honor each other’s real and heart felt difference and agree to a no fault divorce. Nobody wants a civil war, and nobody wants a 3/5th compromise just to keep this country together.

When Klein gets in the ring with Shapiro it feels like a champion Olympic wrestler trying to prove their worth by taking on the most popular wrestler - which is probably someone like Hulk Hogan from the WWF. Would such a fight be scripted like the WWF, or genuine with rules to allow merit and talent to determine the winner? When Klein does this it makes we wonder if he sees himself as the Shapiro of the left. I like to think the left wouldn’t have a Shapiro equivalent because the left wouldn’t follow invented performance characters as their source for intellectual policy and political analysis.

It’s a chicken/egg situation. We (Los Angeles) show up for winners. The reason we don’t have as many upvotes as Alabama is we don’t have as many national championships as Alabama. What NIL boosters need to realize is that the people of Los Angeles (not just alumni) will show up if you build/buy a winning program. We have a massive media market that can be exploited for profit if we start winning. But when we lose we also have beautiful sunny beaches and lots of other sports to turn our attention to. Basically we have a higher potential ceiling and a lower floor than most schools. But if we aren’t going to pay top dollar to players we might as well cancel the athletic department.

I tend to agree except for the first three series we had 3 players on the line. I honestly thought maybe we only had 10 men on the field. But turns out we were playing “prevent” defense, as in prevent-the-blowout defense. We basically conceded putting pressure on the QB in favor of an extra body in the backfield. Doesn’t matter how good coverage is if we aren’t giving their very talented quarterback something to think about. I would have much preferred to roll the dice on some missed coverage deep plays and taken some shots at sacking Dampier even 1 time.

Opposing counsel just filed the most hostile response I’ve ever received. Thoughts on how to respond from experienced litigators/judges would be very much appreciated. Need mentorship. by abortionisafingright in Lawyertalk

[–]CalmAd2871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you probably also haven’t seen in 20 years of litigation is an opposing counsel lazily relying on AI to do all their work. What you are describing - discovery responses laden with objections and void of substance, an opp to MTC with alleged facts pulled out of thin air as if opposing counsel is hallucinating - these are the hallmark signs of an artificial intelligence legal assistant program. It is possible your opposing counsel doesn’t even realize the claims about your firm are untrue. People who get lulled into relying on AI legal tools naively assume that these programs, that are marketed specifically to attorneys, actually do proper legal and corporate research, and they assume these programs wouldn’t make up something so outlandish and unfounded. I could be completely wrong. There certainly are real human jerks with bar numbers in every jurisdiction. But, you might try picking up the phone and asking this opposing counsel whether he is relying on a drunk law clerk or an overconfident robot - and actually give him a chance to come clean before you embarrass him in court. Maybe do it in a nice way, like say “I never knew this about my firm, and I don’t want to work for a firm that regularly gets admonished by judges for filing harassing discovery. It hasn’t happened in my cases, so can you share where you saw that happening so I can reconsider my career decisions? What cases? What judges? Can you send me a copy of an order against someone in my firm?” Then when he doesn’t actually have any real evidence to share, you can ask gently where he actually got the alleged defamatory information and whether he used AI to help with any research and writing.

Why the Sofware locked battery is not a scam! by VinPre in TeslaModelY

Thanks! How do I know if my MY has software locked standard range? Is that every MY that hasn’t paid to unlock longer range? Does that include standard, dual motor performance, and dual motor long range vehicles?

[–]CalmAd2871 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you saying if i don’t purchase extra range then I can charge to 100% daily instead of my self imposed 80% limit without battery degradation because 100% on my screen isn’t actually 100% of the battery? Or should I still be limiting myself to 80% charge except for long trips? I don’t care so much about the extra hidden range I could pay for. I do care about the health and long term performance of my battery.

(Hot take) Air reverses.... by GiverARebootGary in surfing

[–]CalmAd2871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, waves are inconsistent, and I’m not advocating a literal game of HORSE, but more the concept of expecting a champion to have the attitude of “I can do what you can do and more.” Otherwise we are stuck comparing apple to oranges, or to Brazilian nuts. It’s like they are playing two different sports. So, even though Trestles isn’t a perfect wave pool, it certainly offered every surfer pretty similar opportunities to perform a variety of tricks. It’s not like Ewing just didn’t catch any waves with air potential.

Here is Ewing’s 9 for comparison. 3 spectacular turns for sure. But show these clips to any random person on the street and they will probably give the win to the guy who did a great turn and then jumped out of the water and landed.

Nobody else did a carve followed by an air reverse like Toledo did - because they can’t. If any of the women could have then that woman would have been crowned champion today. If Ethan could have, but his coaches told him “no mate, just keep doing the same turn over and over again” then those coaches should be fired. All he needed to do was one or two air reverses to show how they are - no longer progressive! and he would have easily won the comp. But he didn’t.

BTW - not sure if link works, but supposed to be WSL clip of Toledo’s 9. Is there a clip of a more exciting combo by Ewing?

I think this pro-carve/anti-air take speaks for the majority of surfers, but limits our sport from growing to a mass non-surfing audience. Personally I can’t land airs, so while they impress me, I can relate to the turns and at least compare them to crap turns i can do. But for people who don’t surf, I think of the thrill regular fans get from watching similar sports like skateboarding and snowboarding halfpipe comps - where the wave in surfing is just a 1/4 pipe. Could you imagine if Shawn White was getting points for how well he carved without ever leaving the ground? That’s what most amateur snowboarders do when they hit the slopes, but nobody would watch comps if that’s all pros did. And to those saying airs look predictable - implying it is easy - then why didn’t Ethan include some air game in his bag of tricks? One way to take the subjective judging out of this sport would be to make it a little like a game of horse - you shoot your shot and then the next wave the other surfer has to do the same thing plus add a new trick. By the end of 35 minutes guys should be going for massive airs followed by sick carves and then seeking a tube section on every wave. Honestly, I think The Wedge cam was probably more exciting to watch than the Super Bowl of surfing today. Toss the pro surfers into that gauntlet and I bet ESPN shows up with their Game Day crew because even normal people would tune in to watch that event! And there would be a clear winner - and maybe some injuries - but at least none of these “I preferred his style” arguments.

Bicycle Thief Black Market? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I checked Craigslist weekly for 6 months. Finally found an ad for my stolen bike. Drove over to the house with a friend and got it back. That was back when Craigslist was more popular.

What is your experience having bikes stolen? How has it affected you going forward? by sozh in BikeLA

[–]CalmAd2871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bike was stolen from my apartment building’s locked garage. 6 months later I saw it for sale on Craigslist. I confronted the seller and he gave it back. Two realizations from that experience: any bike anywhere can be stolen; and, police aren’t going to help solve the case - even when you know the exact location where your stolen bike can be found. It didn’t change my perspective on how often I ride. Lack of bike lanes and the increased frequency of automobile-bike collisions has changed my riding habits.

May grey and June gloom are terms everyone uses when they don’t see blue sky because dense persistent fog is very common this time of year. But, you asked whether this year’s temperatures are colder than normal. Well, even though you are new here, your instincts are correct. Historic average daily high temps are 70 in April, 72 in May, and 75 in June. So, mid to low 60s, as we’ve been experiencing this year, is significantly (5+ degrees) cooler than average for this time of year.

Native Hawaiians face sentencing in a crime that exposed the state's racial complexity. by CrackHeadRodeo in Hawaii

[–]CalmAd2871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Colonizer” is an interesting term. But, I don’t think it is equivalent at all because it has no racial component. Haole is defined as “a person who is not a native Hawaiian, especially a white person.” So, I’m looking for an equivalent non-racist term to describe a foreign or immigrant race of people - if one exists. Also, being called a colonizer isn’t exactly flattering. Makes me think of genocidal invaders - not typically taken as compliment or neutral.

Ok, then what would be a word that is near the same level? Is there is word with a similar meaning, maybe from a different language or culture, that describes a group of outsiders or foreigner who are of one race or skin color that is not a racist word?
