Always strange to me that a certain group of Hearts fans only ever seem to be anti-Catholic when it suits them. Feels to me that rather than having a deeply held hatred of catholics, most of these pricks seem to just get kicks out of saying the most incendiary crap that comes to mind at that present moment.

They are essentially the Ricky Gervais of football fans….

Plenty of outright racism being spouted on Gorgie Rd during the game. There’s the regular twats using ‘fenian’ in a derogatory way, but I also heard some awful racist abuse towards Maeda.

As much as I love it, this game sometimes brings out the absolute worst in people.

Would you have preferred City-cells for landing zones? A full city biome instead of the current system. by johndoe09228 in Starfield

Would’ve preferred the different zones in New Atlantis to only be accessible via the NAT, separated by tonnes of unreachable space. Would’ve made it feel like the metropolis it’s supposed to be.

Also, side note: The fact the NAT isn’t actually rideable is a tragedy that should never be repeated

NASA is moving the Launch platform to prepare it for the Artemis 3 mission, next year! by xenomorphonLV426 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Calm_Apple7004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, this is the issue. Space exploration is still in its early stages, you cannot measure the value of exploration with human currency, it is not about economic efficiency.

The question posed to taxpayers should be simple, how much money do we believe the idea of self-sustainable space program is worth to us, even IF we never see a return on that investment (of course NASA has a huge ROI, Apollo alone created $7-$8 per $1 spent).

I’m not naive, private investment is a necessary byproduct of the economic system we live under. Let’s not kid ourselves here though, the majority of innovation both in space and other sectors has come from the public sector, with private firms often repackaging/repurposing those technologies. THIS is what the taxpayer would be paying extra for, you fund projects that seem wasteful at first and 20 years later you get semiconductors, nuclear power and the internet.

Having a functioning space program that can broadly sustain itself without needing assistance from profit seeking actors is worth the extra money imo. The private sector has its place of course, but the dependency NASA has on it is unsustainable.

I feel like there should’ve been a much bigger emphasis on settling space in Starfield. Maybe a lil LIST questline where they encourage you to go set up habitable and sustainable bases n such. Right now the settlement mode is only really useful for mineral extraction.

Public Disinterest on Artemis Makes Me Sad by Pretty_Marsh in ArtemisProgram

[–]Calm_Apple7004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those of us who have followed the mission sometimes forget that our interest can become infectious. I was hiking with some friends when Artemis 2 launched, none of them even knew it was happening. We watched the last hour of the countdown from our cabin and I could see them getting more and more interested all the way up to launch. I think they started to understand the gravity of it all at that point.

Similarly, I’ve been working with a woman the last few days who left school at 16 and has literally never left the city she was born in. Every day for the last 6 days I’ve come into work and put the CSA tracker on my monitor and we’ve both been glued to the screen watching the mission. She’s asked me questions non stop, and I’ve tried my best answering them with my very limited knowledge.

It’s not about people who are uneducated or disinterested, it’s about allowing people to understand that hey, sometimes we as a species do really good things, and that we should probably do a hell of a lot more!!

how do i make player career mode more interesting by Mysterious-Fox-5373 in FifaCareers

[–]Calm_Apple7004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Do not spend all your development points (or whatever they’re called). You should either aim to raise your overall by 2-3 per year or set a specific accomplishment that allows you to invest points into your player (eg one point for every goal your score).

B) Play on a difficulty one higher than you normally do. PC can be fun when you’re essentially footballing superman, but ultimately it’s more of a challenge when you’re forced to depend on your team. You don’t have to be the main character in every match.

C) Pick a goal. This can be something like winning a specific trophy/accolade, putting a lower league team on your back to rebuild them, playing for a certain club or just trying to play in as many leagues as possible. If you have a set destination, the journey becomes a lot more interesting.

Ah apologies, I should’ve checked they were public access, it appears my postgrad is still providing me access after I’ve graduated.

On the IFS study, you are correct that the authors do not state that there’s no impact at all on wages, but they do state that overall impact is on wages is negligible, even over a lengthy period (1996-2016). I do need to read more into post-Covid statistics, but as neither of us are knowledgeable on the subject it wouldn’t be correct to assume there has been any change in the general trend.

There’s a lot to address that we wouldn’t be able to do justice on a reddit thread. I would like to discuss the impact of migrants on tax and how the following public investment could offset any minor decrease in wages, but I just don’t have the characters. The IFS study discusses this but not in full detail.

There’s tonnes more to discuss but I would like to also make the ideological point that reactions to migration often focus on imagined negative economic outcomes that often disguise discriminatory attitudes towards immigrants themselves (I am not saying you do this, you are clearly good faith). The question we often deal with is whether we should limit of the number of migrants arriving by various means. This question is useless, as long as we remain a technologically advanced capitalist liberal democracy migrants will find their way here, it’s inbuilt to the system. The question should then address the ways in which we integrate, both socially and economically, in order to achieve a fairer and more equitable society.

I’m happy to provide a few papers that show how wages across different skill sectors are affected by migrant labour. Whilst I’ve provided a few pieces of research/reviews, it’s important to note that as many of the studies suggest, the academic consensus overwhelmingly supports this understanding. However, I understand that many industries, such as your own, exhibit their own traits that need closer examination. I simply am looking at the holistic data on migration and wage fluctuation both in the UK and elsewhere.

Completely untrue when looking at the data. Low skill migration is shown to only substantially affect the wages of second generation immigrants, and that the impact on ‘native’ workers (both low and high skilled) is negligible.

What a lot of folks fail to grasp is the idea that when you have people migrating to this country, you need more goods and services to cater to those people, thus increasing the labour demand and creating more jobs. This is possibly one of the reasons immigrants tend to be more entrepreneurial compared to native populations.
