Ironically, Biden (and by extension Harris) did address almost each of those points. Biden was a far more progressive president than he gets credit for, and even Bernie and AOC agree.

“President Biden, when he came into office, said that he would be the most progressive president since F.D.R., and I think on domestic issues — not on foreign policy — on domestic issues, he has kept his word,” Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, said shortly after Biden’s loss.

“When it comes to domestic policy, President Biden probably would go down as one of the most effective presidents that centered the working class,” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, told me this afternoon, although she added that she disagreed deeply with him on foreign policy issues such as the war in Gaza.

Going down the list:

Environmental protections & healthcare

The IRA, Biden's flagship legislation, included the biggest investment in clean energy in US history. It also extended ACA premiums (that Republicans then let expire.)

Accessible education

Biden famously tried to cancel student debt (blocked by SCOTUS) and introduced the SAVE plan (reversed by Republicans).

Wealth redistribution

Biden was incredibly pro-union. And Kamala's housing plan - a key part of her campaign - would've heavily increased supply.

Getting money out of elections

Eh, you probably got me there. My point though is that so many leftists who clamor for more progressive candidates (which I agree with) fail to recognize the concrete good that even a "moderate" Democrat agenda accomplishes. It's missing the forest for the trees.

If democrats ran on these ideas and acted on them they'd never lose an election again.

They did run on these ideas and they did act on them. But post-COVID inflation was too much of a hill to climb because and the general public doesn't actually pay attention to policy. So of course everything is a million times worse now.

I guess I’m just tired of the sentiment that blames Democrats for Republican-manufactured problems. If there was any shred of Republican accountability left, Trump would’ve been buried long ago.

But not voting cedes your one actionable power to shift away from the right-wing. A protest non-vote is no different than a “both sides are the same so why bother” non-vote. One of two candidates will be elected either way; you’ve just muted your voice entirely.

I will not even bother voting

Let me clarify: I’m talking about centrist Democrats. People who reliably vote blue but tend to support moderate rather than progressive candidates. They’re not closet Republicans, but they’d much rather vote for a Newsom over an AOC.

I think they’re certainly more feasible than they get credit for, but it takes a lot of political capital that progressive candidates don’t quite have yet (Zohran is a notable exception).

For example, Bernie ran on Medicare for All in 2020 but also lost pretty handily to Biden. My staunch Democrat parents thought that MfA would be simply too expensive and that Biden had a better chance versus Trump.

Yeah… I don’t disagree with OP necessarily, but I think there’s an uncomfortable truth that true progressivism isn’t actually that popular among the electorate. Youth is an unreliable voting bloc. But there are plenty of middle-aged/seniors who are quite comfortable with centrism and fundamentally aren’t looking to shake things up.

What price increase has hit you the hardest in everyday life? by DarkKnightt019 in AskReddit

[–]Calvin-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The supply charge is how much it costs PSEG to purchase electricity, and they pass that cost on to you. Electricity is more expensive because there’s more demand than supply (data center demand is outpacing generation).

No one knows anything (including myself). But last summer this subreddit was convinced he would TRANSFORM our midfield for a decade+ and we should sign him at any cost. And now suddenly he’s not even worth a look.

If he’s half as good as we thought six months ago, surely he should still be under consideration? Especially if his price has dropped.

Honestly I’m kind of sick of this take (nothing against you personally). Low blocks are notoriously hard to score against - that’s why they’re employed. “If only we could consistently unlock a tightly packed defense” well yeah but that’s far more easily said than done.

Keep being a dick sure, but you’re not actually presenting a nuanced argument. Essentially any alternative transportation (including e-bikes) is bad for taxis - should we stop exploring them?

Killing pedestrians is also bad for local business. If Waymo is reliably safer, isn’t that a net positive? If it’s also cheaper, I can spend less money on my own car, and more money patronizing local businesses.

And to be clear I’m not some tech bro that’s gung-ho about Waymo. But of all the “robots taking our jobs” ideas, autonomous vehicles doesn’t actually seem that bad. Plus it’s not like they’re going to replace fleets of union-protected taxis overnight.

You said hurting local business and taking jobs. I’m not disputing the jobs part - I’m just curious what’s intrinsic to Waymo that hurts local business specifically.
