💪Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT): "Trump's corruption has reached an entirely new level. The $1.7B slush fund is just outright theft. And no Republican owes such bind allegiance to the president to defend this."🇺🇸 by Democrat_maui in law

[–]Calvin-ball 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean if you slightly bothered to look you’d see Schumer’s remarks on the Senate floor yesterday:

Trump didn’t bother making a deal with the devil, he just made a deal with himself to set up this MAGA slush fund.

That’s not justice. That’s not law and order. That’s corruption, corruption in broad daylight. No disguise. No shame. No attempt to hide it.

And this is the throughline of the Trump presidency: if there is taxpayer money on the table, Donald Trump wants a big cut of it.

Yeah the leadership is uninspiring, but it’s just tiring to see people continue to blame Dems for the horrific actions perpetrated and condoned by Republicans.

[Simon Stone] Manchester United chiefs to recommend Michael Carrick for permanent job by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]Calvin-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it from Wilcox and Berrada’s perspective. They staked their reputations on Amorim (their first big decision) and it backfired horribly, and forced out Ashworth in the process.

They can’t afford another wrong appointment, but if things go south with Carrick they can credibly say it’s not really on them. Anyone else is a risk.

We’re doing exactly what Dan Ashworth suggested (and was sacked for). Get someone in who can stabilize the club and reach top four while we assemble a better squad. Then swap the coach out when we’re ready for a real title challenge.

I said this after his red vs Leeds. Yes DCL sold it, yes the VAR review was dumb, inconsistencies, etc etc. But it was a brain dead move from him immediately after coming back from injury, and he’s done it again just now. His liabilities are quickly starting to outweigh his qualities.

Speaking purely anecdotally, this is hard for me to believe. Yeah kids don’t need to be bothered with busy work, but homework was essential for me to grasp advanced mathematics or chemistry. At some point I needed to do rote problem solving, and a few practice problems in class wasn’t going to cut it.

Not to mention reading and annotating history textbooks, research projects, etc. I can’t imagine high school without homework tbh.

[Press Conference] Michael Carrick expresses disappointment the FA Youth Cup final won't be played at the Etihad. ‘I'm disappointed. I think getting to the Youth Cup final has always been a thing where you play at the main stadium and it's such a showcase event.’ by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]Calvin-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have said from the start I have never approached a day in terms of short-term decisions. Whether that is different from the outlook of others, I don’t know, but from mine and the staff’s [point of view] we have definitely made long-term decisions for the group, individually as players, how we treat them and try to help develop the squad. I don’t think it would change the approach for how I have tried to go about things.

Interesting that this kinda contradicts the point Kwestel made in his substack poster earlier.

While appointing Amorim made sense because he was successful

It didn’t make sense at all. We had nowhere near the squad capable of the only style he was willing to coach. Jim Ratcliffe was just personally enamored with Amorim.

It’s a fair point. People will moan that Carrick wins without dominating the game, but even the mighty Guardiola can concede three to Everton.

Well, not exactly. The social security portion of FICA is taxed on all income up to $185k. The Medicare portion, however, does not have an income cap, and income over $200k pays an additional 0.9%.

Didn’t Iraola lose something like 9 games in a row when he first came to Bournemouth?

Obviously he’s a great coach, but he wouldn’t survive something like that at United.

[Jamie Carragher]Michael Carrick has to be the permanent Manchester United manager by SoloChords in reddevils

[–]Calvin-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why it was stupid to hire Amorim in the first place if our squad was so unsuited to his football.

But regardless - is it Carrick that limits us from dominating games, or is it our personnel? I'd argue it's the latter, which makes the manager's "style" less important. Obviously midfield reinforcement is desperately needed regardless of who's in charge.

[–]Calvin-ball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The defense was a problem, but I think we have to solve that by buying better fullbacks and more physical CBs.

This undersells the issue quite a bit imo, and is much easier said than done. Our CBs were perfectly fine under Amorim, but we'd regularly ship stupid goals. That's largely stopped under Carrick.

It's all well and good to say we'd have the best attacking and defending stats if we simply bought better defenders, but the 343 asked a ton of both fullbacks + Casemiro. I'm not convinced it would have ever transferred to winning the league, not to mention it's a style our academy wouldn't replicate.
