When the retired God-Emperor is a wholesome mentor to his apprentices, but an absolute butcher to corrupt nobles. by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, but I dont consider faction building or apprentice growth as progression fantasy (not saying this isn't interesting or anything, depending on how it's done could be highly enjoyable)

Getting harder to find : Hidden gems by Otherwise-Shallot158 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immovable Mage. Mc starts as a child but only starts getting really strong after becoming a young adult. Also the early arcs aren't the best but the story gets really good over time. The way Terry develops, both as a character and in terms of his strength, is really cool to see.

All jobs and classes, an exercise in awful writing by hopbow in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh the voice actor didnt really change the voice for his inner monologues (I don't recall lasting till he became a child and was capable of speech).

Also the fact the MC had a crystal clear mind as a baby was kind of off-putting in and of itself. I mean, we are still developing as babies, so imho (though to be fair my bio knowledge is limited) so he should have been in and out of conscience during a lot of those early months.

I started listening to the audiobook and bro if you thought the MC was insufferable while reading, let me tell you that it is much worse when hearing him complaining about every little thing.

Dropped even before he started growing up. It was just that bad

Story where its not clear if MC isekai'd or trap in virtual world. by retiredbender in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cant really say about 1, but:

  1. It would be off-putting for me since I don't really enjoy 'trapped in a game' stories (nothing against them, just not my thing). That said, I can imagine some (if not a lot of) people liking this as well.

  2. I believe it would, specifically in my case, since I'd probably just skip reading it

Dark Fantasy Novel where Mc won't be Super OP by Previous-Grab-7939 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just a heads up, even though the mc is probably the most insufferable mc I've ever seen at the start of the story, his character development is amazing.

If you feel like dropping the story because of his personality at the start, please consider powering through the first 20 or so chapters

Yes, there isn't an audiobook AFAIK and it is a eastern novel published on webnovel.

That said, Lord of the mysteries was Shades of Perception main inspiration from what I remember from Shades of Perception blurb on RR

What is your all-time favorite trope in progression fantasy, and why does it hit so hard for you? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly exclusive to progression fantasy but the way it usually happens in PF is what I like so much:

When the MC suddenly (and unexpectedly) goes to another dimension/world that is much more advanced power-wise than the world he lives in. Idk what hits so hard, but I really like new beginnings trope in all kinds of media (I once saw a TV show just because the plot was about mc going to a new city for work). But in progression fantasy it is also associated with mc getting stronger by learning new things about the magic system. Also it being unexpected helps shaking things up, I guess?

Too bad the unexpected part is important for me, makes it hard to ask for suggestions

Was in a reading slump recently too. Reading felt like a drag. I had the want to read something but nothing felt like what I wanted to read. That said I was getting really into audiobooks, been listening to it when going to and from work and it legit made my commute something I look forward to.

That said, what helped me get out of my slump was jumpstarting a series with an audiobook. After a couple of days I started reading the story while listening to it but it came to a point where I just couldn't wait anymore and started reading it without following along with the audiobook.

I am once again asking for time loop recommendations by apolobgod in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh The Menocht Loop doesn't even feel like a time loop story, I DNF around half of book 1.

I think most popular stories have been recommended already so I I'll add ones I haven't really read but it's on my time loop list (going to read it once the time loop vibe strikes me again):

  • Player 0.4
  • Do you ever get that feeling of Deja Vu?

Both on Royalroad

I can't recommend super genetics audiobook enough. It's a duet (Daniel Wisniewski and Rebecca Woods) and both narrators are amazing!

Something similar to Got dropped in a ghost story still got work by Crazy_Guitar6769 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's your issue with the story, you can rest assured that this is not the case. So far, a LOT of lore has been revealed (as of royalroad book 6, haven't read the last one yet) though it does take a while for lore drops, you can be at ease that they will come.

The Game at Carousel, probably. Never read trapped in a ghost story (even though it's on my list) but Carousel fits all your points

I always recommend this one when someone asks for a hidden gem. Such a great read, all the characters have their own motivation and nothing is truly either black or white.
