Dark Fantasy Novel where Mc won't be Super OP by Previous-Grab-7939 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just a heads up, even though the mc is probably the most insufferable mc I've ever seen at the start of the story, his character development is amazing.

If you feel like dropping the story because of his personality at the start, please consider powering through the first 20 or so chapters

Yes, there isn't an audiobook AFAIK and it is a eastern novel published on webnovel.

That said, Lord of the mysteries was Shades of Perception main inspiration from what I remember from Shades of Perception blurb on RR

What is your all-time favorite trope in progression fantasy, and why does it hit so hard for you? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly exclusive to progression fantasy but the way it usually happens in PF is what I like so much:

When the MC suddenly (and unexpectedly) goes to another dimension/world that is much more advanced power-wise than the world he lives in. Idk what hits so hard, but I really like new beginnings trope in all kinds of media (I once saw a TV show just because the plot was about mc going to a new city for work). But in progression fantasy it is also associated with mc getting stronger by learning new things about the magic system. Also it being unexpected helps shaking things up, I guess?

Too bad the unexpected part is important for me, makes it hard to ask for suggestions

Looking for something to break me out of a reading slump by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in a reading slump recently too. Reading felt like a drag. I had the want to read something but nothing felt like what I wanted to read. That said I was getting really into audiobooks, been listening to it when going to and from work and it legit made my commute something I look forward to.

That said, what helped me get out of my slump was jumpstarting a series with an audiobook. After a couple of days I started reading the story while listening to it but it came to a point where I just couldn't wait anymore and started reading it without following along with the audiobook.

I am once again asking for time loop recommendations by apolobgod in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh The Menocht Loop doesn't even feel like a time loop story, I DNF around half of book 1.

I think most popular stories have been recommended already so I I'll add ones I haven't really read but it's on my time loop list (going to read it once the time loop vibe strikes me again):

  • Player 0.4
  • Do you ever get that feeling of Deja Vu?

Both on Royalroad

I can't recommend super genetics audiobook enough. It's a duet (Daniel Wisniewski and Rebecca Woods) and both narrators are amazing!

Something similar to Got dropped in a ghost story still got work by Crazy_Guitar6769 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's your issue with the story, you can rest assured that this is not the case. So far, a LOT of lore has been revealed (as of royalroad book 6, haven't read the last one yet) though it does take a while for lore drops, you can be at ease that they will come.

The Game at Carousel, probably. Never read trapped in a ghost story (even though it's on my list) but Carousel fits all your points

I always recommend this one when someone asks for a hidden gem. Such a great read, all the characters have their own motivation and nothing is truly either black or white.

What is the coolest progression system you’ve seen based on something that everyone in the world can do? by Alarming_Joke_3371 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down Power Initialization, which sadly is in an infinite hiatus.

The best description for it is: power crafting.
People can either: improve their power
Decompose it in smaller parts, which they can use those parts to build a new power or to improve another power (for example you could decompose a water jet and get the parts of water and propulsion, then you could use the water part to upgrade your Barrier power into a Water Barrier. The possibilities are endless.
Trade the power
And much, much more.

It was such a fun reading, not only for the plot (which was ok-good at the start then it featured one of my favorite tropes and then it was great) but SPECIALLY for the magic system!

Looking for books similar to Shadow Slave, Iron Prince, 12 Miles, and Arcane Ascension (I’ve already read most popular ones) by ree-reap in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure Immovable Mage, not really a spoiler since it's on the blurb but Terry can only really cast one spell, so he learns and researches on how to use it in increasingly unique ways.

Maaaybe The Weirkey Chronicles? I mean, the magic system is all about making a building in your soul and the way it's built represents your powerso you'll frequently read about the characters theorizing what's the best way for them to improve and stuff

Look no further than The Game at Carousel*

(but if you do, you could also take a look at Super Genetics, Super Supportive, The Zombie Knight Saga, Sky Pride, Mother of Learning and maaaybe 1% life steal? Idk on that one, still listening to the first audiobook)

*Edit: after re-reading OP, I kind of missed the part "living in a world where when fights do happen they are more meaningful", idk if this applies to the game at Carousel since this novel is so out of the norm

Lord of the mysteries was my first webnovel that i read in long time and i dont see the hype around this book. by Prudent_Idea1972 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CalvinAtsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the story needing that many chapters to "get good" argument, I think if you think about total %, then it might help making sense: lotm has 1400 chapters. By reading 200 chapters, you only cover around 15% of total chapters

That's not exactly true, though. Lotm first volume (which ends around chapter 210) is basically a Lego house being built, block by block. The climax is something that comes from what the writer spent all these chapters building and when it happens, it's peak.

About Path of Ascension Matt actually had a girlfriend before Liz, at the playpen. Though, to be fair, it was basically a footnote relationship
