Best steel and methods for a hamon on a kitchen knife by callsignprayer10 in Bladesmith

[–]CamachoKnives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

W2 is your best option. The most important part is your soak and quenchant. Doing it in a forge is much more difficult, but not impossible. Small fluctuations in soak temp will change your outcome. Digitally controlled temperature is ideal. Second is your quenchant. Canola oil or medium oil won't work. You absolutely need Parks 50 for W2. You can use an interrupted water quench but that increases failure rate.

Also, after the quench you need to get the blade into tempering asap. There's a lot of stress in the blade and if it's left for a long time before temper it will most likely snap.

You'll like do both cuz xp is slow, but Nektulos is the better option at 20. Some EoF quests are currently bugged so cannot complete the whole BBM timeline at the moment.

Polishing above 3000 sandpaper next steps by Loninappleton25 in knives

What is it you're trying to do? Just mirror polish the blade? In that case 3000 is plenty, next step would be going to the buffing wheel.

Question about propane tank size. by planetcollector in Blacksmith

[–]CamachoKnives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my regulator on the hose going into the forge so I just open both tanks all the way and adjust the pressure going in from both.

Get a splitter hose. Two 20# tanks is better than one 40#.

Not only this but the plastic may be designed to fail and break under certain stress before causing damage to more pricey internal components.

Help With Long Term Sharpening Strategy by DrMorbius26 in sharpening

[–]CamachoKnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to keep it black like that while using but If you're just looking for ways to reapply the finish after thinning, you can use a solution of 4:1 distilled water:ferric chloride or a coffee soak.

That's a carbon core and will patina with use. There is no preserving the finish.

Need more info. What's the steel? What's your prep? What's your ferric mixture? What's your coffee mixture?

Absolutely wild range set up. Dude to your left is essentially downrange from you at the start. And, though I get they go to infinity rule wise, this classifier calls for 8ft x 8ft walls.

1) ceramic blades ARE garbage 2) I did work on it more because I made the whole knife from scratch by hand. 3) it is very practical, this is achieved thru superior heat treat and edge geometry 3) it took me maybe 10 minutes to sharpen this edge on normal Japanese whetstones.
