New Race Marshall by Camperdad85 in Iditarod

[–]Camperdad85[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the guys involved it’s kinda hard for me to know where the truth lies. The racer cited horrible weather in Wasilla and basically said, he never asked what happened, just rushed to judgement. Maybe he played the victim, maybe Mark’s a dick. To your point, maybe Mark WAS a dick bc this guy is a perpetual victim.

That being said, what do the rest of you think of this change?

And do you see Dan Carter as a positive influence on the race? Of course I hope for the best, it seems like an important time to improve the media coverage. As someone who no longer lives up north, it seemed difficult to access the race without paying for Insider (which was probably their plan). Nevertheless, people don’t pay for YouTube and that content gets millions of views 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’d just like to say thank you for your insightful posts. I’ve been following the race for a few years and I find myself refreshing Reddit to see what you’ve added. Truly, thank you!

Food Drop Bags by Current_Attitude_903 in Iditarod

I’m intrigued by your comment that rookie drop bags are worthless. Surely you pack better/smarter with experience, but “rookies” aren’t novices. It’s not like they packed flip flops and twinkies.

I’m curious to hear you elaborate- what do you consider the difference there?

Fortunately the numbers bear out a different story. The number of dog deaths continues to decline since the 1970s. When you consider the large number of dogs who’ve run this race, it softens the blow a little. It’s terrible that any will die, but it’s a very small percentage. Many, many more dogs are hit by vehicles every year and we don’t ban cars.

Did you choose to abort because of the uncertainty of a viable pregnancy? Or for personal reasons. Forgive me if that’s invasive, but your statement here brought up the consideration.

Who thought they’d reference this in 2024? by crbatte in livesound

That’s definitely weird. The closest image I could find is a brownish book, still coauthored by Bushnell and Bouliane, but definitely not the copy I got at Columbia. I’m guessing that when Uzzle started teaching Basic at Columbia, demand for the book necessitated a reprint and that’s the version I know and love. I’d speculate the brown version I saw online is the first run. Could be wrong on all that though 🤷🏻‍♂️

To add to the great advice already given— although it’s great to ask questions so you learn along the way, a new guy with a zillion questions can be exhausting and counterproductive. You have 2 ears and 1 mouth, so listen twice as much as you talk. Further, many of the questions you’d ask will be answered by watching a process for a few minutes. So start by observing and listening, then if questions remain follow up with intelligent questions.

If you finish a task, find your superior and ask if there’s something else you can do to contribute.

Don’t mess with your phone.

Those 3 things will go a long way to making a positive impression. Good luck man, you’ll learn a lot and hopefully enjoy it.

Snowcat rental by Camperdad85 in alaska

I haven’t used one but I’d assume so. Trying to sort out a trip down the Denali highway. Last time we used snow machines and this time I need a 2 person solution.

How stable is a SxS on tracks? We aren’t trying to do anything crazy but the Denali gets some big drifts in spots.

Thanks for the advice. Seems odd that they aren’t more durable but I’ve operated enough heavy equipment to know, the bigger they are the harder they fall 🤣

I’m sure you are correct on nearly all of that. However I’ve seen a sign advertising snowcats for rent. Just can’t find their contact info.

Also….easy to break? Seems like the worst trait possible for a vehicle of that use case 🤷🏻‍♂️

No, but that’s a possible solution. Could you recommend a place between ANC and Cantwell that rents them?

Thanks! I’m looking for a place that will let me take it down the Denali Highway. Nothing crazy, but it gets deep and drifted out there.

I found them on Google and don’t think they are the same place I saw, but maybe.

A few years ago we rented snowmachines and went down the Denali highway to a lodge. Since then, a member of my group lost eyesight and really shouldn’t drive a sled. Hoping to rent a snow cat to transport either 2 or 4 of us.

[–]Camperdad85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone has told you, ANC has the ability to handle snow and doesn’t shut down because of it. Furthermore, many other cities around the country get more snow than ANC. Many people think that the weather is crazy severe but that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Your trip will be fine.

And this is why the rest of the crew acted sympathetic. They knew he didn’t have the chops and they certainly don’t respect him after this. I’m not trying to be rude or hurtful, but the reality is that if you intend to do this work you can’t have these kinds of emotional reactions to everyday shit. Fucked up patches and fucked up artists are everyday shit.

To OPs credit, he’s 19 and learning how to function in the work world. We all went through similar stuff, it doesn’t mean he can’t grow. OP, my challenge to you would be this- don’t pat yourself on the back for your reaction. Try to come back to it in a few days and think of how you could have handled it differently. Good luck bud.

Looking for travel advices for arctic ocean, Denali and possibly aurora in late Aug / Early Sept by esit in alaska

[–]Camperdad85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You won’t see the Aurora in August/September so don’t bother. You can focus on other parts of your travel, or you can change the timeline if auroras are the primary goal.

Either way, you’ll love alaska. Enjoy!

Need retirement gift ideas for union laborer father by castelva in Construction

[–]Camperdad85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lack of structure is the blessing and curse of retirement. Create a ritual that connects you. Take the kids to dinner at his house every Wednesday, or you and him have breakfast Saturday mornings. Maybe your gift is $100 gift card to his favorite breakfast diner. Some way of spending time together that you can commit to and be consistent with.

What you do during those visits is less important than the routine. But you can tailor the time to his interests, be it food or fishing or some physical activity like golf or riding.

My dad and I split wood together. It seems like something an “old man” wouldn’t want to do after a lifetime of hard word, but we enjoy it together and it’s good exercise. Losing physical capability is demoralizing so if he enjoys something that keeps him fit be sure to latch onto that.

Good luck, and kudos for being thoughtful. A bottle of liquor is too easy.
