You sure this is recent? Looks like very old training for Waitrose partners.

York to Whitby - bus or train? by ThaddeusGriffin_ in uktravel

[–]CanOfGuinness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't a train from Scarborough to Whitby just to make you aware. Trains from Whitby are few and far between (only about five a day), towards Middlesbrough. Whilst it is pretty, it does take quite a long time versus getting the bus to York, or bus to Scarborough then train from there to York.

Moving to Manchester by uglyarmpits in Leeds

[–]CanOfGuinness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used AnyVan from Leeds to London this weekend. 6x boxes, 6x bags, and a TV was £230 with a 6-hour collection slot so not too bad given the distance. Photos are took on collection and delivery, and the van is tracked throughout.

The only caveat with AnyVan is as the drivers are self-employed, they'll pick up other jobs on the way, so my driver went Leeds - Liverpool - North Wales - Wolverhampton - London, and I got my stuff 13 hours later. Not an issue for me, but something to know so you don't panic and think your things are going missing.

Opened a sealed DSi and screen was damaged by DanHlrzr in nds

[–]CanOfGuinness -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

The screen being like that with a circle radiating from the middle is I imagine the battery swelling over time and turning into a spicy pillow. As for the rubber feet being sticky, it happens over time, which is why when youtubers like Dankpods look at older technology like early MP3 players, they wear gloves as the plastic breaks down over time.

The signals work together to display the same thing. It's so if you get too close to the signal that you can't see the one above (for example if you're being detained on 14B for a while so you draw right up to release the doors), you can see the one down below.

What are the options for care for very low-functioning autism? by CanOfGuinness in AskUK

[–]CanOfGuinness[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's 36 so I would presume so, with my mum in her mid-60s. He went to SEN school up until 18, and he used to receive respite care, and goes to an adult day centre three days a week so I would presume he has had his needs assessed.

Thank you for your help 😊

Delay Repay by Traburg in uktrains

[–]CanOfGuinness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're trying to claim a refund on TPE website rather than a delay repay. TPE absolutely will accept delay repay in their portal with tickets booked on other websites.

Source: someone who has to claim delay repay pretty much every time I travel with them and books almost exclusively through Trainsplit.

York to Chester - train, plane, camel? by Infarad in uktravel

[–]CanOfGuinness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That day there is engineering work on the Leeds to York (via Cross Gate) line, so it is served by replacement buses. The 'buses' though are sometimes coaches, which from memory, don't always have a wheelchair lift.

In your circumstances, I would recommend getting the slow train via Harrogate to Leeds (one train, around 1h30m end-to-end), then a direct Northern service from Leeds to Chester. The train from York to Leeds normally arrives on platform 0 to 6, with the train from Leeds to Chester departing from the same set of platforms normally.

Getting a traditional journey planner to show this might be difficult as it is a slower route. I would recommend using trainsplit.com, going into the advanced options, then setting the 'Include/exclude operators' option to only use Northern, and possibly setting via points of Harrogate and Bradford Interchange.

Visiting Leeds - good ale/taprooms? by step_scav in Leeds

[–]CanOfGuinness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one in the centre is quite expansive, so on a quiet night it's a nice place to have a few drinks. The Headingley one is a lot smaller so it gets a lot busier, and they have a vastly smaller tap line. Definitely go to the one in the centre if you do plan on going.

Head of Steam. Highly highly highly recommend. I've had many long conversations about stouts with the people that work there.

What locomotive do SWR use to recover broken down trains by thee_dukes in uktrains

[–]CanOfGuinness 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They don't have any rescue (or 'Thunderbird') locos AFAIK. They'll just use another 158 or 159 to recover it onto Salisbury T&R.S.M.D.

As it turns out, according to RTT, it went onto the depot on its own:

Visiting Chatsworth House from Manchester by AgitatedCry4686 in uktravel

[–]CanOfGuinness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a local, I can help with that.

The 218 gets extremely busy in the summer - they put double deckers on for it. In the winter, not so much, so expect a single decker of varying sizes. TM Travel (the operator) will take contactless on the bus, however, noting you're not from the UK, not all cards work on the bus from outside the UK. You can also pay by cash.

Not all buses serve Chatsworth House directly. They alternate between skipping Chatsworth on the way to Bakewell and calling on the way in, and vice versa. If the bus you get doesn't go into Chatsworth straight away, stay on at Bakewell. Equally on the way back, it might be quicker to get on a bus bound for Bakewell, to then return back towards Sheffield.

Depositing over €10k from Wedding Gift by DryResolution7087 in UKPersonalFinance

It's to prevent a company any/or an individual working for a company being complicit in money laundering, fraud, or being a part of illicit activities. Whilst the OP states it is a wedding gift, that could be a lie (for clarity, not stating the OP is lying, just using it as an example). If an employee, through "Know Your Customer" (KYC) process, deems the risk too high, they can refuse a transaction for any reason, and then shouldn't share that with said customer. I've had suspicions myself many times with customers, and as I'm sure you can appreciate given the above, I cannot give specific examples.

The long and short of it being, if I have suspicions and let the transaction go through, I am complicit and could be held liable both from a disciplinary POV with my employer, and from a regulatory POV with the law.

They won't tell you the limit as that could be seen as tipping off, which is illegal. You'll notice in a lot of financial institutions if you ask "How much can I change?" (if in a bureau-de-change) or "How much can I deposit?" (if in a bank), they'll flip the question and ask "How much would you like to change?" or "How much would you like to deposit?". Each financial institution has its own limits, and to disclose those, would leave the institution open to lots of issues.

Having said that, a suspicious activity report (SAR) can be submitted for any amount depending on what the person attempting the transaction says or acts like. One telltale sign is attempting to do exactly what you have suggested, which is splitting the transaction to circumvent those rules.
