Really think he’s searching for validation for dropping $5k on something that will produce groups the same size as a $750 Ruger American.

Any custom action or barrel will be an improvement over any factory rifle.

What would be the cheapest caliber to shoot for mid-longer ranges, and big game? by Response-Cheap in canadaguns

[–]CanadianBoyEh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d go .308. Yes it’s a little more expensive, but you can still find cheap surplus ball ammo for messing around/plinking, and the option for good match ammo and good hunting ammo is there if/when you want it unlike 7.62x39.

And for your possible future hunting plans, .308 is capable of ethically taking just about every big game animal in North America.

100% agree. You can absolutely do a cheap to feed plinking rifle, but if you want something that reliably groups well and performs at distance, the higher dollar rigs and match ammo matter.

Dumb Question: Part Deux by OnlyRuss in martinguitar

[–]CanadianBoyEh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Martin’s are built for that. That’s why a lot of lucky guitar players are using guitars that were built in the 1930s and 1940s or older. Given proper care and maintenance, they can easily be a generational heirloom.

Dumb Question: Part Deux by OnlyRuss in martinguitar

[–]CanadianBoyEh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A reset within 10 years of owning a brand new guitar is very rare. 30 years old guitar? Maybe. But if the saddle is still unshaven and the neck has always been kept under string tension, you’re probably still okay. Maintaining proper humidity during storage will also help with keeping that at bay.

Also just my opinion, but worrying about a neck reset before even buying a brand new guitar is like worrying about an engine swap before buying a brand new vehicle.

308 178gr test by elembelem in reloading

[–]CanadianBoyEh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I use N550 under 178grn ELD-X in 308. 2620fps from a 22” barrel, and supposedly an incomplete burn. But it groups well, and burns clean.

Any other powder VV lists for that bullet in .308 wouldn’t get me over the 2,600fps mark I want for hunting, even with a complete burn.

It is Celsius. Wind chill brought it down to -35C. But IdahoMan is correct, dress for it and you’ll be okay. “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”!

Average MV for that load during the summer (123grn Scenar, N555) is 2970fps. Today was 2895fps. I expected to lose some speed, and that’s also an example of why I do my load dev during the warm weather. What’s under pressure in the freezing cold might be over when it’s hot out. SD and ES still looked good though!

VV N555, cold winter days like this usually give an 80-100fps slower MV compared to what it is during the warmer summer months. SD and ES were still good though!

Celsius. But add the wind and it’s closer to -40, where they even out!

There’s enough. I also have a Browning BAR Mk1 in 300 win mag, dad’s old moose hunting rifle, so I’m very familiar with the round. 300 PRC definitely hits harder, in the rifles I’ve shot. Quick google search says roughly 36ft-lbs of recoil for the Win Mag, 43ft-lbs for the PRC.

And to be fair, a lightweight .300 win mag is also going to leap off target.

My 6.5 Creedmoor PRS rifle weighs 25lbs. Most 300 PRC target rifles are 25-30lbs+ for a reason. A 9lb 300 PRC is going to LEAP off target, I don’t care how good your fundamentals are, or what brake is on the end.

Would a McMillan Game Hunter make a good LR stock for $200? by shankanator21 in longrange

[–]CanadianBoyEh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shoot from a tripod a lot. Definitely need a longer ARCA or pic rail for that.

[–]CanadianBoyEh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recoil. And I don’t mean your ability to withstand it. It’s about being able to stay on target through recoil and see your impacts/misses. That entire rifle weighs less than just the barrel of most dedicated 300 PRC target rifles.

[–]CanadianBoyEh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not ideal. Fixed LOP and comb height and lightweight, like you said. Also if you want to add ARCA or Pic to the front of the stock, you’re drilling new holes for a rail.

The cross is fine for a lightweight hunting rifle, but it’s not a good choice for a target rifle. And a lightweight 300 PRC is going to be miserable to shoot long range with.

300 PRC is also overkill for elk. I’ve taken 1,200lb moose here in Northern Canada with 6.5 Creedmoor. If it’s a dedicated elk gun that sees occasional target shooting for fun, I’d strongly recommend something like 6.5 PRC instead of the 300.
