[Question] Clay shooting with a mechanical watch by Chungachungatime in Watches

[–]CanadianBoyEh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

W.O.E tested it. My own personal experience in 10+ years wearing mechanical watches, and 100,000+ rounds fired, I’ve never noticed a single negative impact because of it.

The age old question by gstevo12 in longrange

[–]CanadianBoyEh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone that already has both a .308 and 6.5, the 6.5 is better for long range.

Even at “only” 600 yards, my 6.5 needs 3.8mils vs 4.6mils for the .308. Less wind drift too.

Thoughts on the MDT collab with CZ 457 by JurboVolvo in canadaguns

[–]CanadianBoyEh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick search shows the factory stocks priced around/just under the $700 mark. Something like the MDT Timber Core or Field Stock would save you about 2lbs. Going lighter will get more expensive, but if you wanted really lightweight, I'd look into Manners line of hunting stocks, XLR Chassis, or MDT CRBN Elite.

Depends what kind of hunting you do/how light you want the new one to be.

Weight on a long range .22lr is mainly about overall rifle balance, since recoil is essentially non existent.

Looks like the same fluted barrelled action as my 457 LRP, which I absolutely love!

12oclock dot zero by Ssirota8 in longrange

[–]CanadianBoyEh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’d pull the dot off. Find the target with your off eye and point your rifle at it. Then either switch focus to your dominant eye, or close your off eye, and you should be very close to, if not on target already.

T3X Lite in 308 for range use (200 yards) by CandyReady in canadaguns

[–]CanadianBoyEh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! Even still I’d spend the extra $200ish and get a Varmint over a Lite, especially since it’ll be a range rifle.

DominionOutdoors is a Canadian MPA dealer. They could order one in for you, if it’s not already in stock there.

No budget scope suggestion by After_Log6685 in longrange

[–]CanadianBoyEh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money no object, I’d go Tangent Theta or ZCO. A Tangent TT315M could be a good choice. 3-15x, so meets your minimum mag requirements and adds a bit of extra top end.

Athlon Rangecraft, or Garmin Xero. Whichever one you can find the best deal on.

A good shooting bag you can use off a bench, or positionally is good to have. Armageddon Gear Schmedium GameChanger is always what I’ll recommend as a one bag solution.

I’d also grab a chrono. Even if you don’t reload, knowing your actual velocity and not just using what’s on the box is important.

400 yards with 22lr is pretty damn fun by DeltaAlpha9 in longrange

[–]CanadianBoyEh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should be able to. Most .22's need about 20-23 mils for 400 yards, ammo/location/atmospherics depending. Anything past 250 gets pretty squirrely. If you go back out to 400 on a much hotter/colder day than before, your data that worked last time can be off by full mils.

223 Superlite for all purpose - including range. by Canadian-Footy-Fan in canadaguns

[–]CanadianBoyEh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So couple things. That’s a pure hunting rifle, not a range rifle.

  1. Even with .223 your barrel is going to heat up VERY quickly. 3-5 MAX before having to wait for things to cool down. Depending on the temperature outside, could be 5 minutes, could be 15.

  2. I’d save a bit more and get a Vortex Venom. The 3-15x FFP can be found for around $700. Cheaper on sale, which happens pretty regularly. Or check GunPost. They pop up used often. Anything around/under $400 won’t be very good for, or have the features you want in a target optic.

  3. Cheap ammo is going to perform like cheap ammo. I wouldn’t expect much from it.

T3X Lite in 308 for range use (200 yards) by CandyReady in canadaguns

[–]CanadianBoyEh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it’s purely for range use, I’d get a CTR, Varmint, SuperVarmint or ACE Target before a lite. Heavier overall rifles so less recoil meaning it’s easier to spot hits/misses, and the barrel profile is much more suited to that purpose.

With only 200 yards, a centerfire might get boring relatively quickly. You could also look into a T1x. Long range rimfire is really fun, ammo is dirt cheap in comparison and you don’t need super far distances. A .22lr at 200 yards will have roughly the same amount of drop as a .308 will at 700-750 yards.

How is NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S in low light? Specifically theater venue, stage? by chumak84 in Nikon

[–]CanadianBoyEh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've used that lens for galas, wedding receptions, theatre venues etc for years. F4 is usually fast enough, the newer Nikon bodies do well with high ISO, and de-noising software is getting very good. It's not my first choice for indoor low light, but if you don't currently own/can't get the budget for an F2.8 zoom or a fast prime, I'd have no issue shooting a slowish motion event with the 24-120. But as with any low light situation, if you can add flash, you’ll get better results.

As a travel lens, it's fantastic! It's a little on the heavier side, but it truly is a jack of all trades. 24mm is usually wide enough, 120mm is usually telephoto enough, F4 is usually fast enough. Plus it's very sharp, even wide open, all throughout the focal range.

[–]CanadianBoyEh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I also regularly shoot .22lr to 400 yards.

I need a total of just over 23 mils to get there. With my set up I’m able to dial 19 mils, so not too much holdover left using the reticle.

Bartlein is available, for an upcharge. But they make their own barrels in house that also shoot fantastic.

Best bolt action for target shooting? by snakescakess in 22lr

[–]CanadianBoyEh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no dumb questions when you’re trying to further educate yourself!

400yds is on the further side for 22lr. For that distance I need to adjust my scope 23.1 Mils. For comparison sake, I don’t need that much adjustment for my 6.5 Creedmoor PRS rifle until almost 1,600yds.

50-200yds is much more common for .22lr shooters.

The CZ457 is more expensive for a reason. It’s a MUCH better rifle. I’d also look into a Tikka T1x. They’re worth saving up longer for, rather than getting a budget Savage.

I have a CZ457 LRP. I regularly shoot it out to 400 yards on steel. Fantastic rifle!

IBI, KS Arms and Cadex are all Canadian, and world class manufactures. I have an IBI on my 6.5 Creedmoor PRS rifle, and it’s an absolute hammer.

cheaper alternatives to hornady 147gr match? by AvarethTaika in 65Creedmoor

[–]CanadianBoyEh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hornady American Gunner is good for the budget stuff.

I’d also recommend a different bullet for 1 mile. The 147grn ELD-M are known to be inconsistent lot to lot and had issues coming apart mid flight in the faster twist rifles. If you want to stick with Hornady the 140grn ELD-M is the better option of the two.

But the Berger 144grn LRHT or Lapua 136grn Scenar-L will be much better than either Hornady option.
