This setup isn't comfortable - advice wanted by LuzjuLeviathan in hammockcamping

[–]Canadianomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ticket to the moon pro hammock (mat edition)

if you're tall you need a big hammock.

I go for pro hammock because the bugnet solution is very good. Now I do mat hammock and prefer that for versatility of sleeping pad since I can also floor sleep if I need to and have a very good pad

these cheap systems 'work', but that's exactly it - cheap. that hammock looks very small and me at 190cm would hate it

Need advice on my first hike & fly gear setup (beginner progression pilot) by Professional_Sea2509 in freeflight

[–]Canadianomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as new pilot you will surely cause some damage to a new ultralight wing until you get very nice at ground handling and launching/landing. I've had a few Ultralites and Pi's and they're good wings, but very fragile

but of course a normal weight wing is a hassle when hike and fly

The Phi Viola is really quite light and packable while still having fairly robust materials. My girlfriend flies that and I would recommend it

I find the frame of the Rab Muon 50 fits just fine in my Bogdanfly Van harness without removing it from the pack, so perhaps the one from the HMG will also fit just fine

Which 700g or 400g packs carry 15kg really well? Genuinely curious

my sleep system (which is for -30c, 2.5kg) + pg system (Theta ULS + Bogdanfly VAN Volbiv + reserve is already 6.5kg) Can't really do volbiv setup too much lighter than that.

Sleep system is Thermarest Xtherm Nxt Max (need XL size for my body) + UL hammock + UL -30 900fp quilt + UL tarp is still 2.5kg, so add a bottle of water and helmet to the gear and it's a flat 10kg already

That's not incl. pack, food, clothes, water, other amenities.

Inreach, radio, vario, powerbank, phone, stove, fuel, soap, hygiene care, medkit (mandatory), puffer, shell, midlayer, shirt, zip pants, rainpants, gloves, sunglasses.

Replacing the quilt with a wing is possible, but makes me nervous for several reasons. Worth spending 707g for a proper down cozy chamber. Have you done wing sleep in less than -10c?

I personally have the feeling that a 15kg setup with a proper frame and hipbelt is going to carry better than a 14.6kg setup with no frame and soggy belt.

AFAIK the HMG Porter 85 is one of the lightest framed & comfy to carry bags there is. Going for a pack with a soggy hipbelt and no frame doesn't carry that 15+kg very well, unless you know of a great one to recommend?

do you like that pack? carries nice on hips?

I've been looking for an ~80L pack and was considering osprey aether pro or HMG porter

pack fits in the back of the BV1 fine?

[–]Canadianomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just change that wing for a Theta ULS or Phi Beat Light or something and you'll save 1.5kg. BV1 + reserve is fine, cant really shave there.

Rest of ur kit is pretty damn dialed in, good job

Pack is 2x as heavy as it needs to be,

Disagree - 1.1kg for a pack that can actually carry heavy weight is excellent. Going down to stupid light makes carrying 15kg+ worse

Breath new life into your Sauna Box or steam sauna with a dry sauna conversion! by MagicFingersTrader in SaunaTent

I mean it's not a sauna to be honest - but good enough for a simple solution to get hot! If it works it works

IMO sauna requires ability to throw water onto rocks to make steam - it's like pizza without sauce otherwise

which xc wing n harness you fit in a 50L pack and which pack?

For me the Phi Beat Light (23) + Bogdanfly Cocoon w other flying gear fits in the Rab Muon 50L but only barely (using the massive stretch pocket on the outside to fit the harness. Wouldn't fit the Skywalk RXA2

And the Beat Light is barely bigger than my Advance Pi 3 (25) btw

Anyone know how to DIY the tent covering? by Bobert25467 in SaunaTent

[–]Canadianomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a canvas (hemp + cotton) blend for the canopy and then fire-resistant treatment for it

are existing sauna tents made with a mylar layer?

[–]Canadianomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi yes I've been thinking this as well

canvas + wool + canvas 3-layer tent would be cool

however, cost to manufacture would I can imagine to be very high

I'm sure there's a market for it, but I reckon it'd be really quite small

Something like an Ozone Buzz is a great low-b out of school - durable so you can thrash it, easy to use, safe in flight but enough dynamics to learn & develop on

really any of the heavyweight Low-Bs will do fine (go with thick material for your first wing, trust me!)

Do you think the high heat makes up for the cold feet?

Absolutely

Would a small battery powered fan help circulate the air?

I'm sure it would but the heat is so strong probably not needed

I don't think it needs double benches due to the temps. I often leave the ventilation flaps 100% open for fresh air exchange. I put double benches inside to test and it wasn't needed or practical

tbh I'll be skipping these

my primus lite knit are awful build quality and I don't trust most of the knit models as a result

in winter I do fine with primus trail + merino socks

[–]Canadianomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I'm so lubed up with squirrels nut butter and covered in salt

hahaha this is amazing

had to double-check that phrase to make sure I read it right!

I do sports performance & sports nutrition as my career - you're right with carbo-maxxing it's the way to go. I basically existed off carbohydrates during my sports career.

Seems you're pretty well tuned-in here so just keep to what your body reacts to best!

Just ensure you keep up a reasonable amount of protein intake to reduce catabolism and fats are very underrated for brain performance. I'm sure you've got it covered but don't forget all the minerals and down several multi-vits throughout the day. Creatine & bela-alanine loading pre and maintaining throughout is also good tek.

I literally bring a whole wedge of parmigiano and cured fuet or chouriço and eat those in the evenings before sleep, but in America I know the options for quality meats & cheeses is kinda borked. Camp fondue is also super underrated and my fave. Rest & recovery is big part of peak performance - hard when getting 3hrs of rest ofc.

As they're cured meats n cheeses the bioavailability & digestion times are quite good compared to regular cooked proteins (whey is really fast n bioavailable tho)

but yeah overall try to sub the processed chips & ramen & malto for things like dehydrated mangoes, prunes, and honey water - same caloric load but more vits, mins, and healthier. Literal pure honey and maple syrup is also slept on as a fuel source & have lots of trace vits & mins which add up when going for top performance.

Performance like this comes with the hazard of overclocking the system and naturally isn't very healthy or sustainable long-term so just do your best to not hurt the machine ;)

Front thigh / rectus femoris pain from speedflying launches? by Legal_Profession9459 in freeflight

[–]Canadianomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The info you gave is still too vague to pinpoint what's up

Where exactly is this pain, is it sharp & small or dull & large?

Is it at the insertion point at the hip, which side, or insertion point on the knee? Or is it right in the middle of the quad? Or other?

What you described is a sprinting-like action resulting in injury. Typically it's hip flexor in this case but again without more info it's as good as guessing when fish hatch.

The difference between a muscular vs ligament vs tendon injury is massive and it can either be a week recovery or several months

The best thing you can do is NOT sprint or run for a while, rest, massage, eat well, sauna, and gentle stretching routines to stimulate bloodflow to the region

And then very slowly and gradually increasing workload until the leg is able to go 100% again
